"Mom, I've told you already, I won't marry Shi Xindi. Even if he waits for me for ten years, it won't change anything. Besides, do you really think he's devoted? You must have heard all the rumors about him during the two years I was away from Yulu City. Surely you can't be unaware?" The cold response came from within the room, spoken by Lin Bingbing.
The woman outside was Lin Bingbing's harsh and vain mother.
"Those are just slanders against the Second Young Master of Shyr. You know how young and handsome he is, and coming from a prominent family, there are always unscrupulous women buzzing around him like flies. Don't believe those rumors," Lin Bingbing's mother defended her prospective son-in-law fiercely.
"Ha! Mom, there's nothing more to say. Why can't you consider my feelings? Am I not your daughter?" Lin Bingbing's voice was filled with disappointment. She felt as though she had not received a shred of love from her parents for as long as she could remember; it seemed she was merely a tool for them to make money. When she could earn, they treated her like a treasure; when she couldn't, they discarded her like trash.
"Of course you're my daughter! I'm doing this for your happiness. If you can find someone better than the Second Young Master of Shyr, I won't object," Mother Lin replied.
"The person I like is a thousand times better than the Second Young Master of Shyr," Lin Bingbing declared loudly.
"Who exactly do you like? And it seems that the person you like doesn't feel the same way about you. What good does that do? There are indeed people in Huaxia who are more outstanding than the Second Young Master of Shyr and families even more illustrious than the Shyr family, but when it comes to feelings—especially in high society marriages—it’s not just about your one-sided wishes," Mother Lin said helplessly.
"He... he definitely likes me too; he’s just very busy," Lin Bingbing countered, though her tone lacked conviction.
"Ha! Bingbing, I'm not going to argue with you anymore. You must attend the engagement dinner with the Second Young Master of Shyr tonight. As for that person you like, call him. If he has what it takes to take you away from the Second Young Master of Shyr, I promise I won’t pressure you into anything ever again," Mother Lin said before walking away.
Left alone in her room, Lin Bingbing stared at her reflection in the mirror. She picked up her phone but ultimately lacked the courage to dial Jiang Chen's number. Deep down, she knew that Jiang Chen was surrounded by beautiful women and likely had no interest in her; he probably had forgotten all about her by now.
"Sigh, it's just my one-sided affection, but I'm willing," Lin Bingbing whispered to herself, a hint of stubbornness gleaming in her eyes.
Just as she was lost in thought, her phone suddenly rang. Instinctively, she looked at the screen and was astonished to see Jiang Chen's name flashing on it.
Lin Bingbing thought she might be imagining things and rubbed her eyes before looking again—yes, it was indeed Jiang Chen.
Overjoyed, she quickly pressed the answer button.
"Hello, Bingbing? I heard you got injured while filming. I'm heading to Yulu City right now; where are you staying? I want to come see you," Jiang Chen's voice came through the phone—simple words that sounded like the most beautiful melody to Lin Bingbing's ears this year.
