The only goal was to stay away from Gu Yan, stay away from Su Yao, and avoid any potential trouble. But sometimes, trouble clings to you like chewing gum; no matter how hard you try to shake it off, it just won't let go.
For instance, during the group presentation assignment, I found myself grouped with Gu Yan and two other classmates I wasn't familiar with. The moment I saw the group list, my vision blurred, and I nearly fainted on the spot.
"Wan Wan, what's wrong? You look pale," Tao Tao asked with concern. She was lucky enough to be grouped with a few cheerful girls.
I handed her the list with a sense of despair.
"Wow!" Tao Tao exclaimed. "Gu Yan! What luck you have! You're in the same group as Xue Shen! That's a free ride!"
I forced a smile that didn't quite reach my eyes. "Yeah, what an honor it is to be in a group with Mount Everest." An honor that made me want to run away on the next train.
There was no choice but to brace myself for it.
For our first group discussion, we met in a seminar room at the library. I arrived ten minutes early, and to my surprise, Gu Yan was already there. He sat by the window, focused on his computer screen, his fingers flying over the keyboard with precision. His profile was serious and concentrated.
Sunlight fell on his slightly lowered eyelashes, long and delicate like little fans. In that moment, I had to admit that this guy… was indeed strikingly handsome.
But the next second, he looked up and met my gaze, his expression still cold and distant as if keeping me at arm's length.
Fine, I'll just pretend I didn't see that.
The other two group members arrived shortly after. As expected, Gu Yan played his role as Xue Shen perfectly—his thoughts were clear and logical, and within moments he had outlined the entire framework of our PowerPoint presentation and divided up the tasks.
He spoke very little throughout the discussion; aside from necessary arrangements, he didn’t waste a single word. The other two members seemed intimidated by him as well; they didn’t dare to speak up and simply followed his lead. Only I couldn’t help but timidly raise my hand when he proposed something overly idealistic.
"Um… Gu Classmate, I think your plan might face some difficulties in practical implementation. For example, regarding data collection…"
He looked at me with slightly furrowed brows, seemingly impatient. "What are your thoughts?"
"I think we could…" I felt the pressure but tried my best to succinctly explain my viewpoint and an alternative proposal.
He listened in silence, lightly tapping his fingers on the table after I finished. He neither agreed nor disagreed but simply said, "You can refine this part. Get the plan to me by next Wednesday."
"…Oh." Fine then, I suppose you have a point.
Once the discussion ended, the other two members quickly made their escape. As I packed my things to leave, Gu Yan suddenly spoke up: "Xia Wan."
I paused and looked up at him. This was the first time he had called my name in full.
"Your ideas earlier were quite interesting," he said while looking at me. His tone remained flat, but his gaze seemed… just a tad softer? "We can explore them further."
"Thank you," I said, feeling a bit awkward as I turned my gaze away and grabbed my bag to run off.
That guy is just too strange.
Back in my dorm, I was mentally and physically exhausted. I quickly opened the game, ready to vent to Zero.
"Zero! Help! I've encountered a monumental problem!"
"Oh? Tell me about it; let me have a laugh," he replied.
"We're doing group presentations, and I ended up in a group with the most difficult person in our department—the ice queen! The one I complained about last time!"
"Uh-huh. And then?"
"Then he acted all high and mighty the entire time and assigned me a bunch of tasks! It drove me crazy!" I exaggerated my complaints.
Zero sent a pat-on-the-head emoji: "You’ve had a tough time. Want me to take a look? Maybe I can offer some suggestions."
"Yes, please! Zero save my life!" I immediately sent him the theme of the presentation and Gu Yan's "interesting" ideas.
About half an hour later, Zero replied. He not only pointed out several flaws in my plan but also suggested some very constructive optimization directions and even shared a few relevant reference links with me.
"!!!" I was amazed. "Zero, you're incredible! Are you studying this field too?"
"Just know a bit."
"Zero! Please accept my respect!" I flooded the chat with compliments.
"Alright, enough flattery. Get back to revising, Little Salty Fish."
"Understood! Goodnight, Zero!"
Holding my phone, I felt elated. Even though I had to deal with the ice queen Gu Yan in real life, having Zero as my supportive friend online made me feel hopeful again! Forget Gu Yan; it’s definitely better with Zero around!
