"What the hell did you just say?!"
Mohawk roared, the first to draw his machete. The blade glinted ominously in the dim light, sending chills down my spine.
Scarface Tiger fixed a sinister glare on me, his scarred face seeming to come alive, twisting like a contorted worm, pulsing with his anger.
"You're asking for it!"
With a single command, all the members of the gang pulled out their weapons, their eyes narrowing as they looked at us like a pack of hungry wolves eyeing their prey.
"Wow!" Zhong Dali exclaimed, his eyes lighting up. "Are we about to have a brawl? I love this!"
This idiot was still excited at a time like this!
I cursed inwardly, but there was no time to dwell on it. At Scarface Tiger's command, five thugs charged at us, brandishing various weapons and stirring up a storm of blood and chaos in the abandoned factory district.
"I'll take the two on the left!" the mysterious girl said coldly. Her voice was delicate yet sharp, like a keen ice blade piercing through the air.
Before she finished speaking, she vanished in a flash, moving like a ghost in the dim twilight. There were two sharp cracks, and before the thugs could react, they each had a blood hole in their foreheads and collapsed to the ground.
Damn! This girl is terrifyingly skilled!
I marveled silently but couldn't afford to lose focus. One thug wielding an iron rod came charging at me, rusty nails protruding from it, making it look particularly menacing.
"I'm going to smash that filthy mouth of yours today!" he snarled.
I smirked disdainfully, sidestepping his clumsy attack and delivering a swift kick to his knee.
With a crack, he howled in pain and fell to the ground, dropping the iron rod. Quick as lightning, I snatched it up and swung it down toward his head without hesitation.
Bang!
With a dull thud, he lay on the ground like a dead dog, no longer moving.
In this world, showing mercy is a death sentence.
I was just about to catch my breath when a sudden gust of wind rushed past me from behind. Instinctively, I rolled to the side as a machete sliced through the air, narrowly missing my ear and striking the ground with a shower of sparks.
"Damn! That almost took off my ear!" I sprang up like a carp leaping from water, my heart racing wildly.
Mohawk grinned wickedly as he pulled out his machete and charged at me again.
"Die, you little brat!"
Just when I was feeling overwhelmed, a massive figure suddenly barreled in from the side, crashing directly into Mohawk.
"Whoa! Up in the air!"
Zhong Dali's excited howl echoed through the ruins of the factory as Mohawk was sent flying like a rag doll, crashing heavily into a pile of scrap metal with a loud clang.
"Dali, watch your back!" I shouted urgently.
Two thugs were swinging rusty steel pipes, sneaking up on Zhong Dali from behind.
Zhong Dali turned his head and grinned widely. "Whoa! Bullying the weak, no honor in that!"
He didn’t dodge or evade; he let the steel pipes smash against his broad back.
Clang! Clang!
After two sharp sounds, the pipes bent and deformed upon impact, while Zhong Dali merely frowned slightly, as if he had been bitten by a mosquito.
"That tickles!" He scratched his back and turned to grab the two stunned thugs. "My turn!"
With a sudden thrust of his arms, the two thugs flew out like kites with their strings cut, crashing heavily to the ground and letting out screams akin to a slaughtered pig.
"This... this is impossible!" Scarface Tiger exclaimed, his eyes wide with disbelief as he stared at the scene before him.
There were many mutants in the wasteland, but creatures as tough and resilient as Zhong Dali were truly rare.
Seizing the opportunity, I quietly approached one of the thugs who lay on the ground, still twitching slightly. He had just been shot in the shoulder by the mysterious girl, and blood was gushing from the wound.
This was a rare chance. I rolled over and pinned him down, and in his terrified gaze, I bit into his neck.
"Ah!"
He let out a short, pained scream before his eyes turned vacant. I felt a strange energy surge from his body into mine; it was an indescribable sensation, like drinking a shot of strong liquor that burned all the way down my throat to my stomach, then quickly spread throughout my limbs.
A warm current rushed through my veins, and I felt my muscles becoming firmer and my reflexes sharper.
"Well done!"
I stretched my limbs and felt an overwhelming surge of power. This guy must have been quite a capable fighter in life; I had gained a wealth of practical combat techniques and muscle memory from him.
The mysterious girl, Xiao Yu, cast me a cold glance, seemingly both surprised and disgusted by my abilities.
"Freak," she muttered dismissively before turning to shoot at another thug attempting to sneak up on us.
Bang!
Another shot rang out, hitting that guy squarely in the throat. Blood sprayed forth as he clutched his neck and collapsed to the ground, his eyes wide open in disbelief at how easily he had met his end.
Her marksmanship was simply incredible!
Seeing this, Scarface Tiger's shock gradually morphed into fear. He had initially thought he could easily take down the three seemingly fragile survivors, but instead, he had encountered formidable opponents.
"Who... who are you?" He took a few steps back, his voice trembling slightly.
"We are..." I grinned, revealing my blood-stained teeth, "just the rookies in your eyes."
Scarface Tiger seemed startled by my bloody smile and turned to flee.
"Trying to run?" I scoffed, "Zhong Dali, don't let him escape!"
"Wow!" Zhong Dali exclaimed excitedly, charging toward Scarface Tiger like a bull.
At that moment, Scarface Tiger suddenly stopped and threw something at me.
"Watch out!" the mysterious girl shouted.
I instinctively ducked as a sharp throwing knife whizzed past my head and embedded itself in the wall behind me with a whoosh.
Taking advantage of the moment, Scarface Tiger turned and bolted into a maze of pipes and piles of scrap metal.
"Don't chase him; this is his territory. Be careful of ambushes," the mysterious girl calmly assessed.
I nodded and looked around. This abandoned factory was indeed a complex labyrinth, filled with rusted pipes, broken equipment, and collapsed building debris.
"Let him run for a bit; I have an idea," I said with a slight smile as a bold plan flashed through my mind.
"Xiaoyu, you stay here and provide cover. If you spot Scarface Tiger, injure him but don't kill him."
Xiaoyu nodded and intuitively found a high vantage point, setting up her sniper rifle to monitor the entire area from above.
"Dali, you go guard that iron gate over there. Don't let Scarface Tiger escape the factory area."
"Wow! Got it!" Zhong Dali cheerfully replied as he jogged off to his designated position.
I quietly circled to the other side of the factory. This was the old boiler room, with a few rusted steel beams hanging from the ceiling and various pipes and broken equipment scattered across the floor.
I carefully observed my surroundings, a sly smile creeping onto my lips.
“Scarface Tiger, come out! Stop hiding!” I shouted deliberately, my voice echoing in the empty factory.
There was no response, but I could sense he was nearby, lurking in the shadows like a wounded beast, watching my every move.
“What’s wrong? The mighty leader of the gang has such little courage?” I continued to provoke him, cautiously shifting my position as I spoke. “Weren’t you just so arrogant a moment ago? Telling us to join you, hand over all our supplies, and even my ‘secret’?”
I emphasized the word “secret” intentionally.
Sure enough, I heard a faint sound of footsteps. Scarface Tiger had taken the bait; he was slowly approaching me.
Feigning ignorance, I kept rambling on: “Do you know why I won’t join you? Because I look down on your ragtag group. You can’t even handle a few homeless people and still dare to claim dominance?”
“Bang!”
Suddenly, a loud crash came from behind me. I quickly dodged to the side as an iron pipe struck where I had just been standing.
Scarface Tiger charged out of the shadows, his eyes bloodshot and his scarred face twisted in anger.
“You little brat, I’ll tear you to pieces!” he roared, swinging the iron pipe at me once more.
I nimbly evaded him, retreating while guiding him along the route I had planned.
“Is this all you’ve got? The strength of a gang leader is nothing to write home about!” I continued to taunt him. “No wonder you’re running from those zombies.”
“Shut up!” Scarface Tiger shouted angrily as he swung the pipe again.
I pretended to stumble, making it look like I was about to fall.
Scarface Tiger's eyes flashed with a sinister grin as he increased the force of his attack against me.
"Now's my chance!"
I rolled to the side just in time to evade a lethal strike, grabbing a length of iron chain from the ground and pulling it with all my strength.
"Crack!"
A steel beam that had been fixed to the ceiling broke free under the chain's pull, bringing decades of rust and dust crashing down toward Scarface Tiger.
"Ah—"
Scarface Tiger let out a scream, and before he could dodge, the steel beam pinned him down, leaving only half of his body exposed.
"Tsk tsk, this is quite unfortunate for you," I said leisurely as I approached him, squatting down. "Scarface Tiger? No, I think 'Little Kitty' suits you better. Look at you now; you seem rather pathetic."
He spat out a mouthful of bloodied saliva and glared at me fiercely. "If you have the guts, just kill me!"
"Kill you?" I chuckled. "That would be too boring. You see, I prefer to make the most out of everything."
With that, I began rummaging through his pockets.
"What are you doing?" he struggled, but the beam held him firmly in place.
"I'm looking for something useful," I replied as I continued my search, suddenly feeling something hard and small.
I pulled it out to find a black chip engraved with a strange symbol that resembled a twisted DNA double helix.
"What is this?" I asked curiously.
Scarface Tiger's pupils dilated sharply, and a flicker of fear crossed his face. "Give it back! That's not something you can touch!"
Seeing his reaction, it was clear that this thing was no ordinary item.
"Oh? Then I must study it further," I said, tucking the chip into my pocket and giving his cheek a playful pat. "Thanks, little kitty."
"You... you have no idea who you've messed with!" Scarface Tiger suddenly looked terrified. "That belongs to the Iron Fortress! By taking it, you've made an enemy of the entire Iron Fortress!"
Iron Fortress? What kind of place was that? It sounded like a large shelter or a warlord's stronghold.
"Oh? Sounds pretty intimidating," I replied nonchalantly. "But if a small fry like you can get your hands on it, it can't be that impressive."
"You'll regret this!" he threatened through clenched teeth. "Qin Baye won't let you off!"
Qin Baye? Who was that? It seemed the wasteland was far more complicated than I had imagined.
"Zhong Dali! Little Rain! Come here!" I called out to my companions.
Moments later, Zhong Dali and Little Rain arrived. Upon seeing Scarface Tiger pinned under the steel beam, Zhong Dali's eyes widened in surprise. "Wow! He got flattened!"
Little Rain cast a cold glance at the scene before turning to me. "Did you find anything?"
I pulled out the black chip and showed it to them. "This seems important."
Little Rain took the chip and examined it closely for a moment before her expression turned serious. "I've seen this symbol before; it's an item from the Iron Fortress. There's a tracker on it."
"A tracker?" I exclaimed. "Doesn't that mean we're exposed?"
"Once activated, they can pinpoint our location precisely." Little Rain's voice remained calm, but her eyes held more caution. "We should leave here as soon as possible."
"Wait," I said, looking at Scarface Tiger. "He mentioned a name—Qin Baye. Have you heard of him?"
Little Rain's gaze flickered for a moment, revealing some unease. "The ruler of the Iron Fortress, a brutal warlord who controls a vast array of high-tech weapons and virus research."
"Wow!" Zhong Dali interjected, "That sounds amazing!"
"Shut up!" Both Xiaoyu and I snapped at him in unison.
It seemed we had unwittingly become entangled in a much larger vortex. Behind this chip, there might be a colossal secret hidden away.
"Tie him up and take the chip with us. We need to get out of here," I quickly decided. "By the way, have we dealt with those thugs from earlier?"
"All taken care of," Xiaoyu replied briefly.
"Wow! I took down three of them by myself!" Zhong Dali boasted excitedly.
"Alright, let's hurry up and leave."
Just as we were about to exit, a synchronized sound of footsteps and machinery echoed from outside the factory.
Xiaoyu and I exchanged glances, both wearing serious expressions.
"We're out of time," Xiaoyu whispered. "They're here."
A tightness gripped my heart as I wondered what kind of enemies awaited us outside, but one thing was certain—this farce was just beginning.
