After our six-person match, we sat in the center of the court. "Jie, do you want to go for the Defending Champion?" A Fei suddenly turned his head. I saw the eager look in A Fei's eyes, filled with a desire to compete. Shuai Dong and the others chimed in, "Yeah, yeah, let's go for the Defending Champion! We'll support you all the way!" "A Fei, do you really want to participate?" I asked him. A Fei nodded firmly. I smiled and said, "Alright, brother will accompany you. Let's go make another mark in the Street Basketball world!"
"The registration for the Street Basketball Championship should be starting soon. Let's call Jiang Lingfeng and get ready!" A Fei said excitedly. It seemed that A Fei had been thinking about this for a long time. After that, we dispersed. Once home, I sat on the sofa with A Fei and dialed Jiang Lingfeng's number, turning on the speakerphone. "Hey, Jie! What's up? Missing your captain?" Jiang Lingfeng joked when he answered. A Fei laughed beside me and said, "Captain, I'm here too! What are you up to? Got time?" "I do now! Where are you two playing?" Jiang Lingfeng replied straightforwardly.
"Captain, how about making a comeback on the Street Basketball court and continuing our glory? Challenge yourself for the Defending Champion!" I suggested. Jiang Lingfeng fell silent for a moment before quietly saying, "Team members, the captain wants to shift focus to formal basketball and doesn't want to play Street Basketball anymore, so..." Jiang Lingfeng seemed a bit uncomfortable. A Fei sighed lightly, "Captain, can we meet? How about at Lijing Park?" Jiang Lingfeng immediately replied, "Okay." After a while, we met at the entrance of Lijing Park and walked together to a pavilion in the middle of the pond.
"Captain, could you reconsider? We really hope you can participate; we don't want Dream Chasers to be incomplete." A Fei earnestly told Jiang Lingfeng. Jiang Lingfeng stood up and walked to the railing of the pavilion, looking at the water's surface: "A Fei, it's not that I don't want to participate; it's that I can't because the National Youth Team has called me for training..." "Really!" Both A Fei and I exclaimed in surprise, our mouths agape. "Captain, you've made it into the national team! That's amazing! So great!" Both A Fei and I were genuinely happy for Jiang Lingfeng; we never expected Fengshen would serve the country so soon. It seemed this Street Basketball journey was basically over.
On our way back, neither A Fei nor I spoke; my heart was filled with mixed emotions. "Oh!" Suddenly I thought of something and couldn't help but shout out loud. A Fei jumped in surprise and placed a hand on his chest: "What are you doing scaring me like that? Trying to give me a heart attack?" "A Fei, Ouyang has always wanted to participate in the Street Basketball Championship. How about we Jade Unicorn Three Swordsmen get together and give it a try?" I remembered Ouyang was waiting for my call. A Fei smiled: "Sure! This time we're not doing it for honor; we're just practicing to maintain our form." "Alright then, it's settled!"
I quickly called Ouyang. As soon as he picked up, I heard him excitedly shout: "Jack! You've changed your mind! I knew you'd do this!" Wow! It seemed Ouyang was really looking forward to this call. "Yeah, this time it'll be you, me, and A Fei. Let's meet at Lake City Park's entrance to register; remember to bring your ID," I told him. Ouyang's tone remained enthusiastic: "Sure! I'll definitely be there on time!"
The next day I went downstairs to Xia Ying's place and called her out. After a while, she walked down slowly: "What’s up? Why are you waiting for me at my door?" Although Xia Ying's tone was quite stiff, I could tell she wasn't angry anymore. I quickly approached her and took her hand playfully: "Come on now; don't be mad anymore! You've already hit me and scolded me; I'm still here as the victim!" I teased her back. Xia Ying didn't like it: "Oh! So you're still playing the victim? Shouldn't I apologize then, Jack?" "No, no! I'm sorry! Sister Cookie, to express my apology, I'd like to treat you to ice cream. Would Sister Cookie do me the honor?" I knew everything between Xia Ying and me was fine now. "Hmph! I want three flavors!" Xia Ying pouted. "Alright, alright! My princess! Let's go!" I pulled her along as we headed out.
Before long it was registration day. The three of us showed up at Lake City Park's entrance as promised. As soon as Ouyang saw us two, he rushed over to hug us both; even more outrageous was that he gave each of us a hot kiss! We quickly pushed him away. "Hey now, Ouyang bro! Can you calm down? Don't you know guys shouldn't kiss each other?" I said while wiping off saliva from my face. A Fei quietly added beside me: "Isn't it supposed to be that men and women shouldn't touch each other?" "Then guys definitely shouldn't kiss! If it were a guy and girl though... well..." I joked with them. Ouyang laughed: "You're such a rogue! Alright then; let's hurry inside."
Once inside we successfully registered our team name as The Three Musketeers; Dream Chasers officially became history while The Three Musketeers is reality now. We were about to play our first round of preliminaries soon; therefore this afternoon we needed to teach Ouyang about Street Basketball rules and strategies while also trying to regain last year's feeling. However, with Jiang Lingfeng gone this time among us three only I specialized in point guard position; thus there would need to be some adjustments in positions—likely adopting a dual Point Guard + Center strategy. Without our Wind God Captain's exceptional organizational skills our strength might be somewhat weaker than last year’s performance; however Ouyang's long-range scoring ability is also one of our major assets. Plus just a month ago we had played together in City High League so our chemistry should still be good.
In the afternoon we practiced our coordination at school gymnasium; Ouyang mainly practiced shooting from beyond the arc and stop-and-pop jump shots while I took on Jiang Lingfeng's role practicing passing distribution and assists while also needing strong scoring ability myself. However this entire semester including City High League I've been playing as point guard so this doesn't put too much pressure on me either—after all we've already tasted National Championship before; this time is purely practice— even if we can't defend our title we won't feel too much regret because having experienced it once is already enough.
