Xuan Yang felt a sudden blur before his eyes, and the surrounding scenery shifted dramatically.
The once dilapidated and crumbling temple vanished without a trace, as if it had never existed at all.
In its place was an extremely desolate battlefield, scarred and ravaged.
Amidst the broken walls and ruins lay countless corpses, some human, some of strange beasts, and even some remnants of indescribable monsters.
These bodies were in various states of decay; some had been severed by sharp blades, others crushed by blunt instruments, while some appeared to have been torn apart by some terrifying force, their deaths gruesome beyond belief.
The air was thick with the stench of blood, nauseating and foul, a putrid mix of death, decay, and despair.
Tattered battle flags flapped in the wind, emitting a mournful wail as if recounting the brutality of this war.
Xuan Yang stood frozen, surveying the scene of broken walls and scattered corpses around him, a strange chill creeping into his heart.
"What the hell is this place?" he couldn't help but curse. He had never witnessed such a horrific sight; even the war scenes he had seen in movies during his past life paled in comparison to this.
Suddenly, a deep voice whispered in his ear, like a murmur from hell: "You are my successor?"
Xuan Yang turned abruptly to see a tall figure standing behind him.
The figure wore a long black robe, with a wide hood obscuring its face, shrouded in shadow and difficult to discern.
"Who are you?" Xuan Yang asked warily, sensing the dangerous aura emanating from this figure.
At the same time, the restless heart of the Puppet Master within him throbbed faintly, as if responding to something.
"Damn it, this feeling is really uncomfortable," Xuan Yang cursed under his breath; he disliked this sense of being out of control.
"Who am I?" The figure let out a deep laugh laced with mockery. "I am you, and you are me. I am the master of this power and also a prisoner of this fate."
Xuan Yang's heart skipped a beat. This guy was talking in riddles; could he be insane?
"Stop with the theatrics. Who exactly are you?" he asked again, his tone tinged with impatience.
He had no time to play guessing games with a madman.
The figure slowly approached him, the shadow that enveloped him gradually dissipating to reveal an extraordinarily handsome face.
That face was strikingly identical to Xuan Yang's!
Yet his gaze was deeper and colder, as if it had endured countless years of hardship, and it seemed to harbor endless darkness.
"I am you, the you of the past, and the you of the future. I am the Puppet Master," the figure said calmly, his tone carrying an undeniable authority, as if he were the ruler of this world.
Xuan Yang was stunned. He... he was the Puppet Master?
How could this be possible?
How could he possibly be connected to someone who looked so sinister?
"Impossible! You're lying to me!" he shouted, his voice tinged with panic.
He couldn't accept this reality; it was more absurd than believing he was Ultraman.
The Puppet Master looked at him coldly, a hint of disappointment flashing in his eyes. "It seems you are not yet ready to inherit my power."
Xuan Yang felt a chill run through him as he sensed a powerful pressure emanating from the Puppet Master, weighing down on him like a mountain, making it hard for him to breathe.
"What... what do you want?" he asked, forcing himself to remain calm. Despite the turmoil inside him, he knew he could not show weakness at this moment.
The Puppet Master remained silent, simply extending his hand and giving a gentle wave.
A beam of black light instantly enveloped Xuan Yang, and he felt his consciousness being pulled into a strange space.
It was a world filled with darkness, devoid of light and sound, only endless emptiness and loneliness.
Panic surged within him as he tried to escape this place but found himself unable to move, as if he were trapped in this dark realm.
"This is your inner world, filled with fear and confusion," the voice of the Puppet Master echoed again, like a demonic sound from hell, sending chills down his spine.
Xuan Yang gritted his teeth, striving to calm himself.
He told himself that this must be an illusion; he could not be governed by fear.
"I am not afraid!" he shouted, his voice reverberating in the vast darkness. Though it trembled slightly, it was filled with determination.
The Puppet Master looked at him, a glimmer of appreciation flashing in his eyes. "Good. You are stronger than I imagined."
"Tell me what I should do?" Xuan Yang asked, urgency lacing his tone as he desperately wanted to escape this cursed place.
"Find the secret of the stone tablet and unlock the seal on you, then you will inherit my power," the Puppet Master replied. "But remember, power is a double-edged sword. It can make you strong or lead you to destruction. You must control it; otherwise, you will become a second me—a Puppet Master consumed by power."
Xuan Yang took a deep breath, his gaze resolute. "I will control it; I will not repeat your mistakes!"
He understood that this might be a test he had to pass to gain true power.
The Puppet Master nodded. "Very well, I believe in you, my successor."
With that, he waved his hand again, and Xuan Yang felt his consciousness instantly return to the real world.
He opened his eyes abruptly, finding himself still standing in the dilapidated temple, but the surroundings had changed.
Strange runes appeared on the walls of the temple, shimmering with golden light like stars in the night sky—mysterious and beautiful.
These runes seemed alive as they flowed slowly across the walls, emanating an ancient and powerful aura.
He reached out and gently touched one of the runes, and a surge of immense power rushed into his body.
He felt filled with strength, as if he could control everything.
"This is... an advanced version of reverse manipulation?" he murmured to himself, excitement and exhilaration swelling within him.
He closed his eyes, carefully feeling the surge of new power within him.
He discovered that he could control everything around him with greater precision, even manipulating time and space.
He attempted to control his own shadow, and in an instant, it transformed into a figure identical to himself, like a doppelgänger that could obey his commands.
"Is this... the true power of Shadow Puppet?" he murmured again, filled with awe.
He finally understood; he was the Puppet Master, wielding the power to control everything!
He lifted his head and gazed into the distance, his eyes resolute and confident.
He knew that his mission had only just begun...
Suddenly, he felt a pang of anxiety, a strong sense of unease as if danger was approaching…
He turned sharply, looking toward the entrance of the ruined temple, and saw a dark figure silently moving closer to him.
The shadow moved with incredible speed, reaching him in the blink of an eye.
Xuan Yang's pupils constricted as he recognized the true form of that shadow; it was a…
