The guardian beast of the Misty Forest resembled a giant bear, yet it bore the scales of a lizard and bat-like wings. It let out a deafening roar as it lunged toward the crowd. A foul wind carried a stench that made it impossible to open one’s eyes, and an overwhelming sense of pressure gripped everyone’s hearts as if an invisible hand was tightly squeezing them.
People frantically waved their weapons, various powers shimmering like fireworks bursting in the night sky—brilliant and dazzling, yet unable to withstand the beast's ferocious assault. The clash of blades and the glow of abilities intertwined, reflecting the terrified faces of the crowd.
“We can’t keep this up; it will pick us off one by one!” shouted the experienced leader, his voice hoarse with anxiety, beads of sweat forming on his forehead.
“Everyone split up to draw its attention, then regroup at the designated location!” The leader’s voice carried an undeniable command, and without hesitation, the group sprang into action.
They quickly divided into two teams, fleeing in different directions. Branches slapped against their faces, and bushes tore at their clothes as each person ran for their lives, as if being pursued by demons from hell.
Xuan Yang and Qu Si Yang teamed up with two other Trialists, sprinting deeper into the forest. The mist thickened around them like heavy cotton, obscuring their vision and disorienting their sense of direction.
Xuan Yang held Qu Si Yang's hand tightly as they navigated through the fog, anxiety swelling within him. He felt her hand cold and trembling; he knew she must be terrified at that moment.
“Xuan Yang, what do we do now?” Qu Si Yang asked urgently, her voice quivering with a hint of tears. Fear gripped her throat like an invisible giant hand, making it hard for her to breathe.
Xuan Yang furrowed his brow, quickly thinking of a plan. “First, we need to find a safe place to hide, then we’ll figure out what to do next.” His tone was firm as he tried to offer Qu Si Yang some comfort and encouragement.
Suddenly, a cold laugh echoed from within the mist, sharp and chilling like a snake's hiss. “Want to hide? Not so easy!” The voice dripped with mockery and malice, sending shivers down their spines.
Almost immediately, several dark figures sprang from the fog like phantoms, surrounding Xuan Yang and Qu Si Yang. Dressed in black cloaks with their faces concealed, only their greedy eyes were visible—staring at them like hungry wolves.
“It’s another team!” one Trialist exclaimed in terror. He recognized these figures as their former companions who had fought alongside them against the guardian beast.
"What do you want?" Xuan Yang asked coldly, a glint of cold light flashing in his eyes. He had already guessed the other party's intentions but still wanted to confirm.
"What do we want? Of course, we want to seize the Heart of the Puppet Master!" The leader of the black-clad men sneered, his eyes filled with greed. He licked his lips as if he could already see the Heart of the Puppet Master right before him.
"The Heart of the Puppet Master?" Xuan Yang was taken aback. It suddenly dawned on him that the purpose of this trial was to find the legendary Heart of the Puppet Master. He had been so focused on the immediate danger that he had forgotten the ultimate goal of this trial.
"Hand it over if you know what's good for you; otherwise, don't blame us for being rude!" The black-clad man threatened, his tone filled with murderous intent. The dagger in his hand glinted coldly, as if ready to take a life at any moment.
Xuan Yang scoffed, "You think you can?" His tone was filled with disdain and mockery, as if he regarded them as nothing more than a bunch of clowns.
Before he finished speaking, Xuan Yang activated Shadow Puppet. Five Shadow Puppets appeared out of thin air like black phantoms in the mist, lunging toward the black-clad men. Their movements were swift and silent, like the arrival of death itself, sending chills down spines.
The black-clad men clearly did not expect Xuan Yang to have this trick up his sleeve and were caught off guard. They panicked and swung their weapons but were utterly unable to fend off the attacks from the Shadow Puppets.
"Damn it! He has reinforcements!" one of the black-clad men exclaimed in horror as he hurriedly waved his weapon to defend against the Shadow Puppets' assault. Fear and regret filled his heart; if he had known, he would never have targeted Xuan Yang.
At that moment, Xuan Yang silently recited an incantation and activated Reverse Control. A strange wave of energy spread out, enveloping the entire battlefield.
The weapons in the hands of the black-clad men suddenly turned uncontrollably against themselves. Blades flashed in the mist, and screams echoed as they fell one by one, writhing in pain.
"Ah!" Several cries of agony rang out as the black-clad men collapsed to the ground, groaning in suffering. They could never have imagined that they would be harmed by their own weapons.
"With such little skill, you dare to come for the Heart of the Puppet Master?" Xuan Yang sneered, his tone dripping with disdain. He looked at the fallen black-clad men without a shred of pity in his heart.
Qu Si Yang and the other two Trialists looked at Xuan Yang in astonishment, their eyes filled with admiration. They had not expected Xuan Yang to be so powerful, effortlessly defeating the black-clad figures.
"Xuan Yang, you are amazing!" Qu Si Yang exclaimed excitedly, her tone brimming with adoration. The look in her eyes was one of both affection and respect.
Xuan Yang smiled slightly. "Let's move on," he said. He did not allow himself to bask in the glory of victory; he knew that greater dangers awaited them.
At that moment, a loud crash echoed through the air, and the ground shook violently as if an earthquake had struck. The surrounding trees swayed violently, their leaves falling like rain.
"What’s happening?" the group gasped, rising to their feet and warily scanning their surroundings. Fear and unease filled their hearts as they wondered what would happen next.
Suddenly, a massive figure slowly emerged from the mist. It was large and terrifying, resembling a demon from hell.
It was a gigantic spider, entirely black, with eight sharp claws and eyes gleaming with a bloodthirsty light. Each of its legs was thicker than an adult's thigh, covered in sharp barbs that sent chills down their spines.
"It's the Spider Queen of the Misty Forest!" one of the Trialists cried out, his voice trembling with fear. He sounded as if he might burst into tears.
The Spider Queen let out a piercing shriek and lunged toward them…
