Lin Weiwei closed her laptop and rubbed her tired eyes. Staring at the screen for too long had left them dry, as if fine sand were scratching against her eyelids. Outside the window, the dazzling night view of City A unfolded like a vast painting, with flickering neon lights reflecting off her weary face. Skyscrapers stood tall like steel giants in the night, while the flow of traffic resembled fiery dragons weaving through the streets. She was the CEO of Starshine Entertainment, a formidable woman who had made her mark in the business world. Over the past five years, she had poured her heart and soul into transforming a company on the brink of bankruptcy into a leading player in the industry, a struggle that was hardly known to outsiders.
However, just a few minutes ago, she received news that could destroy everything she had built—Gu Wei Group's legal representative was implicated in tax evasion, and shockingly, that representative was Lin Weiwei herself. It had always been Gu Han; how could it suddenly be her?
A chill ran from her feet to the top of her head, and Lin Weiwei felt a wave of suffocation wash over her, as if someone were choking her. Gu Han, the man she had loved for five years, had committed tax evasion in her name. On their wedding anniversary, he had lovingly given her a diamond ring as a gift to celebrate Starshine's IPO; now it felt more like a cold shackle. With this scandal breaking out and the amount involved being substantial, she faced the prospect of imprisonment.
Lin Weiwei felt dizzy, as if the entire world were tilting. She clutched the table to steady herself, nausea roiling in her stomach as if it were about to spill over. Trembling, she picked up her phone and dialed Gu Han's number, her fingertips icy as if gripping a piece of ice.
When he answered, Gu Han's voice was as gentle as ever: "Weiwei, what's wrong?" That soothing tone now felt like a venomous snake's hiss, sending chills down her spine.
Lin Weiwei struggled to control her emotions and asked each word carefully: "Gu Han, why is my name listed as the legal representative of the company? When did you change it? How could I not know?" Her voice was hoarse, tinged with an almost imperceptible tremor.
There was silence on the other end for a moment—a stillness that felt like the calm before a storm. Then Gu Han's voice turned frantic: "Weiwei, let me explain..." His words trembled slightly, sounding like a lie that had been exposed—pale and powerless.
Lin Weiwei closed her eyes and took a deep breath, trying to suppress the tumultuous emotions within her: "No need for explanations; I already know." She didn't want to hear his excuses; any explanation would feel hollow and could not mend the hurt he had caused her.
She hung up the phone, tears silently streaming down her cheeks, leaving cold trails on her face. She curled up in a corner like an injured beast, silently licking her wounds. Gu Han, are you blaming me for not protecting our child? Is this your way of getting back at me? At this moment, I owe you nothing.
The next day, police came to take Lin Weiwei away while Gu Han never dared to show his face; he could only quietly clean up the mess behind the scenes. Weiwei remained CEO of Starshine Entertainment—a piece of news that caused quite a stir in City A.
At that moment, Lin Weiwei suddenly realized she did not truly know Gu Han. He did not give up; he fought for her by appealing and gathering evidence. Ultimately, two years later, Lin Weiwei walked out of prison.
The sunlight was blinding; she squinted uncomfortably. Two years behind bars had left her gaunt and pale; the once vibrant woman now looked haggard.
Waiting for her was Gu Han. He appeared much more worn than two years ago—scruffy with deep-set eyes—the spirited man she once knew was nowhere to be found.
"I'm sorry, Weiwei. I was wrong," Gu Han choked out, his voice trembling with emotion. "I had my reasons at the time, and I never expected the consequences to be this severe." His voice was hoarse, tinged with a hint of desperation.
Lin Weiwei looked at him coldly, remaining silent. Her eyes were hollow, as if she had lost her soul; the love that once burned brightly between them had turned to cold ashes.
Gu Han took out an envelope and handed it to her. "Weiwei, I know I don't deserve your forgiveness. Inside is some money, a form of compensation. I hope you can leave City A and start anew." His hand trembled as if he were carrying a weight too heavy to bear.
Lin Weiwei accepted the envelope and opened it. Inside was a plane ticket to Canada, a stack of cash, and a card.
Suddenly, she laughed—a bleak and despairing laugh. This so-called compensation felt more like charity to her, a humiliation.
"Gu Han, do you think these can make up for everything I've suffered?" Lin Weiwei's voice trembled with emotion. "You sent me to prison and destroyed my life. Now you want to drive me away—do you even have a heart?" Her voice was hoarse, laced with anger and despair.
Gu Han lowered his head, unable to meet her gaze. He was filled with guilt and regret but didn't know how to make amends. Yet he was too afraid to keep her by his side.
"Weiwei, I—"
"Enough!" Lin Weiwei interrupted him sharply. "I don't want to hear another word from you." She was utterly disappointed in him and didn't want to listen to any more explanations or justifications.
Turning away, she walked off without hesitation. Dragging her weary body step by step toward the distance, she left Gu Han standing alone, consumed by regret.
A few days later, news broke of a plane crash en route to Canada, with no survivors.
When Gu Han heard the news, he completely fell apart. He frantically searched for Lin Weiwei but could never find her.
It was only then that he realized how foolish he had been—selfishly believing that pushing her away was the best way to protect her. He regretted everything he had done and lamented not having made amends properly.
Heaven does not disappoint those who are earnest. Two years later, Gu Han found Lin Weiwei in a remote little town.
She looked even more emaciated than before, her complexion pale and her eyes hollow.
"Weiwei... is that you?" Gu Han trembled as he reached out his hand, wanting to touch her.
Lin Weiwei took a step back, avoiding his hand.
"Don't touch me." Her voice was soft but carried a hint of coldness.
Gu Han's heart felt as if it had been pierced by a needle.
"Weiwei, I know I was wrong. I shouldn't have let you go. Please forgive me, okay?" He choked on his words, "I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you." As he spoke, Gu Han knelt down.
Lin Weiwei looked at him, her gaze complicated. Once two people who loved each other so deeply, how had they ended up in this situation?
"Gu Han, it's too late for everything." She coughed lightly a few times, her face growing even paler. "I don't have much time left. I've got cancer and won't live long."
Gu Han was stunned, as if struck by lightning. He stood there rigidly, his ears buzzing with the sound of Lin Weiwei's words, which exploded in his mind like thunder. "Cancer?" Those two words weighed heavily on his heart, almost making it hard for him to breathe. He couldn't believe it, nor did he want to accept that this cruel reality had befallen the woman he loved so dearly.
"Yes." Lin Weiwei's voice was gentle like a feather but felt as heavy as a thousand pounds, striking Gu Han's heart with every word and causing him deep anguish.
"Terminal." She added calmly, as if recounting a story that had nothing to do with her. This calmness only deepened Gu Han's despair, making him feel as though he were falling into a cold abyss.
Gu Han's heart felt like it was being tightly gripped by an invisible hand; the intense pain made it nearly impossible for him to breathe. He trembled as he reached out his hand again, wanting to touch Lin Weiwei, but hesitated in mid-air. He was afraid—afraid that if he touched her, she would shatter like a bubble and disappear from his life forever.
“Weiwei, you want me to leave, so you’re saying this on purpose. You’re just trying to deceive me, aren’t you?” His voice trembled, laced with a hint of pleading, despair, and unwillingness. How he wished Lin Weiwei could smile and tell him this was just a joke, a prank.
Lin Weiwei shook her head, her gaze hollow as if she had lost the essence of her soul, leaving only an empty shell behind. “There’s no need to deceive you.” She coughed softly a few times, her face growing paler, like a thin sheet of paper that could be blown away by the slightest breeze.
“The doctor said I have at most three months left.” Those words struck Gu Han's heart like a sharp knife, causing him unbearable pain.
Gu Han could no longer control his emotions; tears streamed down his face as he tightly embraced Lin Weiwei, as if trying to merge her into his body, locking her away so that death could not take her from him. “Weiwei, I beg you, don’t leave me. I can’t live without you. I truly know I was wrong. Please, please give me one more chance,” his voice choked with desperation and helplessness, like a lost child.
Lin Weiwei remained silent, simply leaning against him, feeling his warm embrace and the rapid beating of his heart. She knew this was the last time she would feel his warmth; it was the final comfort in her life. She closed her eyes as silent tears fell, soaking Gu Han's shirt.
If only time could turn back, she would want to be an ordinary person, marrying Gu Han and having children; nothing else would matter. If heaven could grant her another chance, she would cherish him and their love deeply. Unfortunately, it was all too late; she had no time left, and death loomed behind her with its scythe.
Suddenly, a wave of intense pain surged through her; Lin Weiwei's consciousness began to fade as the world around her started to spin uncontrollably. She felt as if she were engulfed in darkness, everything around her becoming ethereal and indistinct.
She heard Gu Han’s heart-wrenching cries filled with pain and despair; it pierced her heart like a sharp blade again and again. But she could no longer respond; her body felt lighter as if it were drifting into the air toward an unknown shore. She knew she was close to death; the shadow of mortality enveloped her.
In the final moment before consciousness slipped away, she felt as though she had returned five years into the past, back to their wedding day. In the church, sunlight streamed through stained glass windows, casting colorful shadows. She stood in a pure white wedding dress, holding flowers in front of the priest, waiting for her groom.
Gu Han approached her slowly in a black suit, wearing a blissful smile that sparkled with love in his eyes. He reached her side and gazed at her tenderly before softly saying, “Weiwei, I love you.”
A happy smile spread across Lin Weiwei's face as tears shimmered in her eyes. “I love you too,” she replied softly, her voice sweet and gentle.
Then everything faded into darkness; the world fell silent.
Lin Weiwei suddenly opened her eyes, gasping for breath, her heart racing as if it would leap out of her chest. She realized she was lying in bed, covered by a thin blanket, and the room was quiet except for the cheerful chirping of birds outside.
Looking around, she recognized the familiar layout of the room; it was her bedroom from five years ago, the one she shared with Gu Han when they got married. She sat up abruptly, staring at her hands—smooth and delicate, without a single wrinkle, brimming with youthful vitality. She touched her face, which felt soft and elastic, as if she had returned to her twenties.
She could hardly believe her eyes; everything felt too real yet dreamlike. She had been reborn, back to five years ago, to the day of their wedding.
Tears streamed down Lin Weiwei's face as she clenched her fists tightly, filled with excitement and joy, along with hope and longing for the future. She had a second chance; she could change everything and make up for the regrets of her past life. At that moment, her career seemed less important; all she wanted was to hold onto the child she never had in her previous life and live as an ordinary person.
She would not let tragedy repeat itself. She would cherish Gu Han and their love deeply. She wanted him to know just how much she loved him; she wanted to grow old together with him, never to be separated again. She would make those who had hurt her pay for their actions. She knew that in her past life, Gu Han's tax evasion was true, but she would ensure that those pulling the strings behind him faced consequences. She needed to protect herself and those she loved.
It was time for a fresh start, to live a vibrant life and become a different version of herself. Taking a deep breath, she walked to the window and pulled back the curtains. Warm sunlight flooded into the room, illuminating everything within it and brightening her heart.
Outside, the bustling streets of City A were alive with traffic and people, full of energy and vitality. Lin Weiwei inhaled deeply, savoring the fresh air and the joy of being reborn. She felt empowered and hopeful; her life was just beginning.
Suddenly, a knock at the door interrupted her thoughts. “Weiwei, are you awake?” It was Gu Han’s voice, gentle and concerned.
Her heart raced as she took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. “Come in,” she replied softly.
The door opened, and Gu Han stepped inside. Dressed in a white shirt and black trousers, he looked as handsome as ever, full of vitality. A hint of worry crossed his face when he saw Lin Weiwei awake; relief washed over him as he smiled.
“Weiwei, are you alright? I heard you might have had a nightmare,” he said as he approached the bed and gently stroked her hair with a tender tone.
Looking into Gu Han's warm eyes filled Lin Weiwei with emotion; tears welled up again. “I’m fine,” she shook her head, forcing a smile. “I just had a dream.” Then she embraced him tightly—the man she thought she had lost.
Gu Han sat on the edge of the bed and continued to stroke her hair gently. “I’m glad you’re okay,” he said softly. “Are you hungry? I made you breakfast.”
Lin Weiwei looked at Gu Han's gentle gaze, her heart filled with happiness and sweetness. She knew that Gu Han truly loved her, and she would not let him down again; this time, she would ensure the safety of their child.
"Mm, I'm hungry," she nodded, a happy smile spreading across her face.
A smile also appeared on Gu Han's face as he stood up to get breakfast. Lin Weiwei watched his retreating figure, warmth and happiness swelling within her. She knew that this time, she would be happy.
Suddenly, a scene flashed through Lin Weiwei's mind. It was the last moment she saw before the plane crash in her previous life. A man stood beside the wreckage of the aircraft, wearing a sinister smile that was filled with malice and triumph. That man was...
Lin Weiwei's pupils constricted sharply as an ominous premonition surged within her.
In her mind, images of the burning wreckage and the man's treacherous smile flickered back and forth, thick smoke billowing as flames greedily licked at the twisted metal, resembling a scene from hell. The curve of the man's lips appeared particularly sinister in the firelight, reminiscent of a bloodthirsty demon.
A chill of fear crept up her spine like a parasite, swiftly engulfing her entire body and causing her to shiver involuntarily. The cold air from the air conditioning brushed against her skin but could not dispel this bone-deep chill.
That man was Lu Jingchen.
Gu Han's rival and Lin Weiwei's ex; these words rolled around in her mind like a bitter pill that was hard to swallow.
"Weiwei? What's wrong? You look so pale," Gu Han returned with breakfast and noticed Lin Weiwei's ashen face, concern etched on his features. He gently placed the tray on the bedside table and leaned down, his deep gaze filled with worry.
Lin Weiwei snapped back to reality, forcing a smile. "It's nothing; I might still be waking up from a dream." She reached up to touch her forehead, trying to mask the turmoil within.
She took the breakfast that Gu Han offered her; the aroma of milk, the scent of fried eggs, and the fragrance of bread all seemed bland and tasteless at that moment.
Lu Jingchen—why did he have to do this?
Was the plane crash in her past life and Gu Han's tax evasion not an accident?
A terrifying thought emerged in her mind: Lu Jingchen was the true culprit who wanted her dead!
This thought grew wildly like weeds, tightly wrapping around her heart, making it hard for her to breathe. It felt as if a massive stone was pressing down on her chest, suffocating her.
She had to uncover the truth! For herself, and for Gu Han.
“Gu Han,” Lin Weiwei set down her plate, her tone serious. “Have you had any conflicts with Lu Jingchen recently?” Her gaze locked onto Gu Han, as if trying to read something from his face.
Gu Han paused for a moment before smiling. “It's just business competition, nothing unusual. Why do you suddenly ask this?” He reached out to hold Lin Weiwei's hand, trying to offer her some comfort.
Lin Weiwei took a deep breath, striving to remain calm. “I’m just a bit worried about you.” She couldn’t reveal the truth to Gu Han yet; she needed evidence—solid evidence.
“Fool, what could happen to me?” Gu Han ruffled her hair affectionately. “Just focus on taking care of the baby; leave everything else to me.”
Taking care of the baby—right, she was already pregnant…
Lin Weiwei felt a bitter smile tug at her lips.
In her past life, she had chosen her future over Lu Jingchen, sacrificing everything, including the child she had with Gu Han. The cold operating table and the acrid smell of disinfectant were nightmares she could never shake off.
Now, reborn with Gu Han's child in her womb, she faced threats from Lu Jingchen. The irony and anger coursing through her were unbearable.
Heaven, are you joking with me?
“Gu Han,” Lin Weiwei grasped Gu Han's hand, her gaze resolute. “Promise me, you must be careful of Lu Jingchen.” There was a hint of pleading and urgency in her tone.
Gu Han looked at her serious expression, feeling a stir in his heart. “Alright, I promise you.” Although he didn’t understand why Lin Weiwei was suddenly so anxious, he couldn’t help but agree when he saw the worry in her eyes.
After breakfast, Gu Han went to work.
Lin Weiwei sat alone in her room. Outside the floor-to-ceiling window, the sun shone brightly, and the birds sang sweetly, but she felt none of the beauty around her. Her thoughts were chaotic, tangled like a ball of yarn that couldn’t be unraveled or cut.
She had to find evidence quickly to prove that Lu Jingchen was the mastermind behind it all. Time was pressing, and she couldn’t afford to be the slightest bit negligent.
But now she was unarmed; how could she investigate?
Suddenly, she remembered an assistant from Gu Han's side in her previous life, Wang Hao.
Wang Hao was upright and loyal to Gu Han, holding considerable prestige in the company. Perhaps he could help her.
Lin Weiwei immediately called Wang Hao to arrange a meeting. Her tone was urgent, with a barely noticeable tremor.
An hour later, Wang Hao arrived at Lin Weiwei's place. He was dressed in a neat suit, his expression serious—clearly someone who took his responsibilities seriously.
“Miss Lin, what can I do for you?” Wang Hao asked respectfully.
Lin Weiwei got straight to the point. “Wang Hao, I need your help with something.” Her tone was sincere, and there was a glimmer of hope in her eyes.
She shared her suspicions with Wang Hao and requested his assistance in investigating Lu Jingchen. She tried to speak calmly, but her words still betrayed an unmistakable anxiety.
After hearing Lin Weiwei's words, Wang Hao's expression grew serious. "Miss Lin, your suspicions are not unfounded. I've recently noticed some suspicious actions from Lu Jingchen as well." His brow furrowed, and a hint of worry flashed in his eyes.
"He has been secretly acquiring shares of the Gu and has also been in contact with some of the higher-ups at the Gu." Wang Hao added, his tone low, as if he were suppressing a rising anger.
Lin Weiwei's heart sank like a stone dropped into an unfathomable lake.
It seemed her intuition was correct; Lu Jingchen was indeed plotting against Gu Han.
"Wang Hao, can you help me gather evidence of Lu Jingchen's crimes?" Lin Weiwei asked earnestly. Her voice trembled slightly, as if she had grasped a lifeline.
Wang Hao nodded without hesitation. "Miss Lin, don't worry. I will do my best to help you." His tone was firm and filled with strength, giving Lin Weiwei a glimmer of hope.
Lin Weiwei grasped Wang Hao's hand and said gratefully, "Thank you, Wang Hao."
With Wang Hao's assistance, a flicker of hope ignited within Lin Weiwei, like seeing a ray of light in the darkness.
She had to stop Lu Jingchen's scheme, protect Gu Han, and safeguard their child. This was her only goal now and the motivation to keep going.
Just then, Lin Weiwei's phone rang.
It was an unfamiliar number.
After hesitating for a moment, she answered the call.
"Lin Weiwei, long time no see." A cold voice came from the other end of the line, chilling her to the bone like a snake's hiss.
It was Lu Jingchen!
Lin Weiwei's heart sank, a chill spreading throughout her body in an instant.
"What do you want?" Lin Weiwei asked, forcing herself to sound calm. Her voice trembled slightly, but she struggled to maintain her composure.
"I want to talk to you," Lu Jingchen replied, his tone laced with mockery. "About Gu Han, and about the child in your womb."
Lin Weiwei's breath caught in her throat, a wave of intense unease washing over her.
Lu Jingchen, what does he really want? His cold voice echoed in Lin Weiwei's ears like a venomous snake, coiling around her heart and nearly suffocating her. The icy sensation spread from her fingertips; the phone felt like a branding iron, searing into her palm.
Fear, anger, worry—various emotions surged within her, weaving an impenetrable web that ensnared her tightly. Her stomach churned violently as if a storm were raging inside, and she felt on the verge of vomiting.
Taking a deep breath, she tried to steady herself. "What do you want to talk about?" Her voice quivered slightly, yet she forced herself to sound composed, like a frightened deer striving to maintain an outward calm.
"Let's meet and talk," Lu Jingchen said with a hint of amusement, as if he held all the power, enjoying her fear like a cat playing with a mouse. "Tomorrow at noon, at the top-floor revolving restaurant of the Regal Hotel. Don't be late." He paused deliberately, each word striking Lin Weiwei's heart like a hammer.
With that, before Lin Weiwei could respond, he hung up the phone.
Beep beep beep...
The harsh busy signal echoed in Lin Weiwei's ears like a sharp knife, piercing through her eardrums. The world seemed to freeze at that moment, leaving only that heart-stopping sound.
The Regal Hotel—it was the place where she and Gu Han had once shared sweet dates, filled with their cherished memories. Now, those memories felt like a thorn deeply embedded in her heart.
Lu Jingchen chose to meet there. Was he deliberately humiliating her? Was he flaunting his victory?
Lin Weiwei gripped her phone tightly, her knuckles turning white as the flames of anger burned fiercely within her. A wave of heat surged to her eyes, but she fought back the tears.
She would never yield!
She needed to confront Lu Jingchen face-to-face and expose his true nature! She had to protect herself and the child growing inside her!
Wang Hao had been silently watching Lin Weiwei. He noticed the subtle changes in her expression, from fear to anger, and finally to determination. Concerned, he asked, “Miss Lin, are you alright?” His voice was deep and gentle, tinged with worry.
Lin Weiwei took a deep breath and shared Lu Jingchen's invitation with Wang Hao. She didn’t hold anything back; she needed help, someone to face this storm with her.
After listening, Wang Hao's expression grew serious. “Miss Lin, Lu Jingchen is cunning; it’s too dangerous for you to go alone.” His tone was filled with concern, his brows furrowed like two deep ravines. “He chose Regal Hotel for a reason; it’s clearly intentional. That place is filled with memories of Mr. Gu for you. He wants to provoke you into losing your composure.”
“I know,” Lin Weiwei nodded. “But I have to go. I can’t let him roam free any longer, and I can’t let him hurt my child.” Her gaze was resolute, carrying a hint of defiance, like a wildflower swaying in the storm yet refusing to bow down.
“I’ll go with you,” Wang Hao said without hesitation. “I will ensure your safety.” His tone was firm and powerful, like a mountain providing support for Lin Weiwei.
Lin Weiwei glanced at Wang Hao with gratitude. “Thank you, Wang Hao.” Her voice was slightly hoarse but filled with sincerity.
The next day at noon, Lin Weiwei and Wang Hao arrived punctually at the top-floor revolving restaurant of Regal Hotel. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting dappled shadows on the floor.
The restaurant was not crowded; the atmosphere was quiet and elegant. Soft music flowed through the air but could not soothe Lin Weiwei's inner anxiety.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the cityscape unfolded in all its glory—tall buildings stood like sentinels while cars flowed like rivers in a bustling scene. This city had once held the dreams she shared with Gu Han; now it felt so foreign and cold.
However, Lin Weiwei had no heart to appreciate the beautiful scenery.
Her gaze was fixed tightly on the door, her heart filled with anxiety and unease. Like prey targeted by a hunter, she felt her breath becoming difficult.
What would Lu Jingchen say? What would he do?
Time passed second by second, stretching out like a century. Each second felt like it was torturing her nerves.
Finally, Lu Jingchen appeared.
He wore a black suit, his tall figure and handsome face striking, but his eyes were cold and sharp, like a knife that sent chills down one’s spine. He seemed like a devil emerging from the darkness, bringing an oppressive aura that was suffocating.
He walked up to Lin Weiwei, a wicked smile curling at the corners of his mouth. “Long time no see, Weiwei.”
His tone was flippant, laced with mockery, as if he were looking at a mere plaything. This familiar address now made her feel utterly disgusted.
Lin Weiwei suppressed her revulsion and looked at him coldly. “What do you want to talk about?” Her voice was icy, devoid of any warmth.
Lu Jingchen pulled out a chair and sat down gracefully. Every move he made exuded an air of nobility, yet it couldn’t hide the cruelty that lay beneath.
He picked up the menu and casually ordered a few dishes before handing it to Lin Weiwei. “Order whatever you want.” His tone was indifferent, as if this were just an ordinary date.
Lin Weiwei ignored him, her gaze icy as she stared at him. “Lu Jingchen, what exactly do you want?” She didn’t want to waste time with him; she just wanted to end this nightmare as quickly as possible.
Lu Jingchen set down the menu and raised his head, his cold eyes locking onto Lin Weiwei. “I want you to stay away from Gu Han.” His tone was unequivocal, carrying a hint of threat, like a fierce beast revealing its sharp fangs.
Lin Weiwei let out a cold laugh. "You must be dreaming! It's already over between us." She would not compromise; she would not give up her love.
"Do you think you have any choices left?" Lu Jingchen's lips curled into a cruel smile. "Gu Han and the child in your womb are your Achilles' heel." His voice was deep and chilling, like a venomous snake flicking its tongue.
Lin Weiwei's heart sank, a wave of coldness spreading throughout her body. She felt dizzy, as if the entire world was spinning.
Lu Jingchen knew she was pregnant!
What did he want?
A terrifying thought surfaced in her mind, sending shivers down her spine.
It had been like this in her previous life; Lu Jingchen wanted to kill her child!
Lu Jingchen knew she was pregnant.
This fact detonated in Lin Weiwei's mind like a bomb, shattering all her facades and composure. Fear, cold and sticky, descended upon her like a sudden nightfall, engulfing her instantly. She instinctively cradled her abdomen, her fingertips trembling slightly as she felt the new life growing within her, along with the immense fear that accompanied it. Her eyes reflected a mix of terror and vigilance, like a small beast cornered by a hunter, huddled in the corner and warily watching everything around it, breathing carefully.
"How... how did you know?" Her voice trembled, barely audible. Each word felt as if it were being forced from the depths of her throat, laced with an uncontrollable despair.
Seeing her terrified expression, Lu Jingchen's lips curled into a cruel smile, tinged with a sense of vindictive pleasure. He slowly walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking down at the brightly lit city below, his tone casual as if discussing something trivial. "Does it matter? Is there anything in this city that I want to know but can't?"
Lin Weiwei's heart plummeted; a chill shot from her feet to the top of her head. His nonchalance felt more like a silent threat that left her breathless. "What do you want from me?" Her voice carried a hint of sobbing; tears welled in her eyes but she fought hard to hold them back. She felt as if her heart was about to leap out of her chest, pounding against her ribcage as if trying to break free.
Lu Jingchen did not respond; he simply gazed at her, his eyes filled with amusement, like a cat toying with a mouse, relishing her fear and helplessness. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city's noise seemed to be cut off, leaving the room in a terrifying silence, broken only by the ticking of an old clock on the wall, each tick striking against Lin Weiwei's taut nerves.
This silence was more frightening than any words. It wrapped around her like an invisible net, suffocating her and leaving no room for escape.
Lin Weiwei felt like a prey caught in a spider's web, helplessly watching as the predator drew closer, unable to fight back. Cold sweat trickled down her forehead, soaking her temples and her heart.
Time passed slowly, each second torturing her nerves. The air in the room felt thick and oppressive, making it hard to breathe.
Finally, Lu Jingchen turned around, looking down at her from his elevated position, and spoke slowly. "It's simple: leave Gu Han, and the child will live." His tone was icy, devoid of any emotion, like a sharp knife piercing Lin Weiwei's heart.
"Impossible!" Lin Weiwei rejected him without hesitation. Her voice trembled but was filled with determination. She would never give up Gu Han for her child, nor would she compromise with Lu Jingchen. She held her belly tightly, feeling the faint heartbeat within—her hope and her strength.
Lu Jingchen sneered, a glint of malice flashing in his eyes. "Then don't blame me for being rude." A hint of murderous intent flickered in his gaze, like a ferocious beast revealing its sharp fangs.
"You dare!" Lin Weiwei shouted angrily. She knew Lu Jingchen was ruthless and capable of anything. Fear made her tremble, but her maternal instinct fueled her courage.
"You can try," Lu Jingchen said provocatively. He wanted to force Lin Weiwei to make a choice; he wanted to see her struggle in pain. He reveled in this feeling of control, enjoying the sight of her despair.
Lin Weiwei bit her lip tightly until blood trickled from the corner of her mouth, but she did not back down; she would never yield to Lu Jingchen's threats. Stubbornly lifting her head, she met his gaze directly, her eyes filled with defiance and resilience.
At that moment, Wang Hao stepped forward, standing protectively in front of Lin Weiwei like an imposing mountain. "Lu Jingchen, if you have a problem with me, come at me; don't harm Miss Lin." His voice was firm and powerful, carrying a sense of unwavering resolve.
Lu Jingchen looked at Wang Hao with disdain. "Oh? I thought it was someone important; do you really think you can stop me?" His tone dripped with contempt as if Wang Hao were nothing more than an insignificant insect in his eyes.
"You can try," Wang Hao replied fearlessly as he met Lu Jingchen's gaze. His eyes were filled with determination and resolve; he would protect Lin Weiwei at all costs—even if it meant sacrificing his own life. He clenched his fists until his knuckles turned white, his body tense and ready for battle at any moment.
The atmosphere was tense, on the brink of explosion. The air was thick with the smell of gunpowder, as if a single spark could ignite this silent war.
At that moment, the door to the revolving restaurant was suddenly pushed open.
Gu Han walked in.
He saw Lin Weiwei's pale face, the fear in her eyes, and the cruel smile on Lu Jingchen's face. In an instant, he understood what had happened. A surge of anger ignited within him, burning away his reason and consuming his calm.
He stepped toward Lu Jingchen, his gaze filled with murderous intent, like an enraged lion ready to pounce. Each step was steady and powerful, as if carrying the weight of a thousand pounds, intimidating everyone present.
