Xuan Qing had urgent matters to attend to and left suddenly, leaving the two children to return on their own. Xuan Yang felt as if his entire body had fallen apart, with pain radiating through his bones.
Each breath felt like a dull knife sawing through his lungs, causing him to gasp in agony. He struggled to get up, but his body felt drained of all strength, limp and powerless.
Beside him, Qu Si Yang was in no better condition. Her face was as pale as paper, with dried blood lingering at the corners of her mouth. Her weak breaths seemed as if they could stop at any moment.
Xuan Yang looked at her with a pained heart, forcing himself to endure the pain as he slowly crawled toward Qu Si Yang. He resembled a clumsy caterpillar inching across the ground, each movement sending sharp pangs through him. “Si Yang, are you... are you okay? Is anything wrong?” he finally managed to reach her side and asked breathlessly, his voice filled with anxiety and guilt.
Qu Si Yang forced out a smile that was more painful than tears, her voice weak like a mosquito's buzz. “I... I'm fine, I won't... die... cough cough…” Before she could finish her sentence, another violent fit of coughing seized her, curling her body as if she were trying to expel her very insides.
Seeing Qu Si Yang in such pain felt like a large hand gripping Xuan Yang's heart tightly, making it hard for him to breathe. If it weren't for him, Qu Si Yang wouldn't have been so severely injured. “Damn it, it's all my fault for being so weak!” he cursed himself internally, filled with self-reproach and guilt. If only he were stronger, Si Yang wouldn’t have suffered so badly.
At that moment, Xuan Yang suddenly sensed a strange energy fluctuation, like a gentle breeze brushing against his body. This energy emanated from the black pendant resting on his chest—a relic left to him by his grandfather, an ordinary-looking black stone shaped like a teardrop.
The pendant began to warm slightly, like a smooth pebble heated by the sun, emitting a faint black light. This glow shimmered like stars twinkling in the night sky—mysterious and enchanting, carrying an indescribable allure.
As the pendant heated up, Xuan Yang felt a warm current spreading throughout his body, as comforting as soaking in a hot spring. His previously shattered body gradually regained some strength, and the pain receded like a tide.
He stared in astonishment at the pendant on his chest, filled with curiosity. “This pendant... does it hold some secret?” he murmured to himself, his eyes sparkling with intrigue.
At the same time, Qu Si Yang also sensed this peculiar energy fluctuation. Her once-pale face slowly regained some color, and her breathing became steadier, no longer as frantic as before.
“What is this...” Qu Si Yang gazed at Xuan Yang's pendant in surprise; her previously dull eyes now shone with curiosity and inquiry.
“I don’t know either...” Xuan Yang shook his head; it was his first time experiencing the pendant's extraordinary power, leaving him both astonished and puzzled.
Suddenly, the black light from the pendant intensified dramatically, like lightning illuminating the night sky and dispelling the surrounding darkness. Xuan Yang felt himself enveloped by a powerful force as if an invisible hand were gripping him tightly; he instinctively closed his eyes as if about to plunge into an unfathomable dream.
When he opened his eyes again, he found himself in a strange space. It was pitch black—like being drenched in ink—where he couldn't see his own hand in front of him. Only countless shadows floated in the air like ghostly figures howling silently, sending chills down his spine.
“What the hell is this place?” Xuan Yang couldn't help but curse aloud; an inexplicable fear gripped him. The atmosphere was eerie and unsettling, making him feel as though something sinister lurked in the shadows watching him.
At that moment, a voice echoed in his mind—deep and hoarse—like rusty iron scraping against each other or whispers from hell itself; it was filled with mystery and eeriness.
“Welcome to the Shadow Realm…”
"Who? Who is speaking?" Xuan Yang asked warily, looking around but seeing no one, only the flickering shadows dancing in the air.
"I am the Shadow Puppet..." the voice echoed again. "I am the power that sleeps within you, and now, I shall awaken completely..."
Upon hearing this voice, Xuan Yang was filled with shock and confusion. "Shadow Puppet? The power sleeping within me? What is going on?" He felt a headache coming on; it was all too bewildering.
Before he could ponder further, a powerful force surged into his body. This force rushed through him like a raging river, crashing violently within him like a herd of wild horses, wreaking havoc on his meridians and causing excruciating pain as if it were tearing his body apart.
"Ah!" Xuan Yang couldn't help but scream in agony; he felt as if his body was about to explode. The power was too overwhelming, so immense that he couldn't control it at all, like a small water tank trying to contain an entire river, ready to burst at any moment.
The force grew stronger, and Xuan Yang felt he could barely withstand it. His face turned pale, beads of sweat forming on his forehead, and his body began to tremble violently.
At that moment, the Pendant on his chest suddenly erupted with dazzling light. This light shone like the rising sun, dispelling the surrounding darkness and illuminating the entire space. The once menacing shadows shrieked in terror under this light as if they had encountered their nemesis, dissipating into wisps of blue smoke.
Xuan Yang felt his body enveloped by this light, like a warm embrace holding him tightly. The chaotic power that had been rampaging inside him gradually calmed down under this illumination, no longer violent. The pain began to fade away, replaced by an unprecedented sense of relief, as if parched land was finally nourished by rain, bursting forth with vitality.
He felt his body brimming with strength, an endless supply of energy flowing through him. It was as if he could control everything; neither this space nor the drifting shadows could escape his grasp.
"Is this... the power of the Shadow Puppet?" Xuan Yang murmured to himself, excitement gleaming in his eyes like two burning flames.
He slowly raised his hand, and a stream of Black Energy surged from his palm, writhing like serpents at his fingertips. This Black Energy quickly coalesced into a Black Shadow that resembled him perfectly but lacked facial features—only a pair of Crimson eyes glimmering with an eerie light. Under his command, this shadow moved gracefully like a well-trained dancer, every motion filled with strength and beauty.
"Hahaha! Have I awakened my Ability?" Xuan Yang couldn't help but laugh joyfully; his voice echoed with excitement in the dark space.
He had finally awakened the power of the Shadow Puppet; he was no longer that useless boy! From now on, he would become a true powerhouse—one capable of protecting those he cared about! He would never let something like today happen again!
He thought of Qu Si Yang, a gentle and determined look crossing his face. "Si Yang, wait for me; I will definitely protect you!" he silently vowed in his heart.
Suddenly, the space began to twist like a crumpled canvas, folding into countless creases. Xuan Yang felt himself being pulled into a powerful force as if caught in a massive whirlpool, spinning uncontrollably.
When he opened his eyes again, he found himself back in the real world. He realized he was still lying in the dilapidated temple; everything around him looked familiar again. However, the once dim temple was now shrouded in a faint Black Light that gave it an eerie quality.
Qu Si Yang lay beside him; her complexion had returned to normal and no longer appeared pale. Her breathing had stabilized as if she were a peacefully sleeping child.
Xuan Yang looked at Qu Si Yang with gratitude and affection swelling in his heart. "Thank you, Si Yang; if it weren't for you, I might have died here." He gently held her hand; her once-cold fingers now radiated warmth.
From now on, I will definitely protect you and will not let you suffer any harm again! Xuan Yang silently vowed in his heart, his eyes filled with tenderness and determination.
At that moment, Xuan Yang suddenly sensed a powerful aura rapidly approaching. This aura was cold and sinister, like a venomous snake lurking in the shadows, watching him. A chill ran down his spine as he quickly turned to look, his gaze sharp as a blade.
A figure emerged from the darkness like a ghost. Tall and slender, it wore a long black robe and a black mask that concealed its face, revealing only one Dual Eye that glimmered with a chilling light.
It was the Shadow! He was still alive! Moreover, his aura was even stronger than before! Xuan Yang's heart raced to his throat as he felt an unprecedented sense of crisis.
"Heh, I didn't expect you to still be alive..." The Shadow looked at Xuan Yang with a mocking and playful expression. His voice was hoarse and deep, as if it came from the depths of hell. "It seems you have awakened the power of the Shadow Puppet..."
There was a hint of surprise in his voice, but more so greed and desire, like a hungry wolf eyeing a delicious prey.
"What do you want?" Xuan Yang asked warily, sensing that the Shadow's intentions were far from good.
"Of course... to kill you and seize your power!" The Shadow sneered, a glint of murderous intent flashing in his eyes like a drawn sword gleaming coldly.
He slowly raised his hand, and a powerful dark force surged from within him, sweeping toward Xuan Yang like a tidal wave... This power was stronger and more malevolent than before, as if it sought to devour all light.
The Shadow's attack was incredibly swift, like a bolt of black lightning, arriving before Xuan Yang in an instant. He had no time to evade and could only watch helplessly as the dark force surged toward him.
In that critical moment, the Pendant on Xuan Yang's chest erupted with dazzling light once again...
