"Kid, do you remember us?" said the one with Mutton Chops. "Uncle, you must have mistaken us..." I pretended to be confused and forced a smile, "Keep pretending, because we’ve been detained for over half a month, and now you don’t recognize us." The one with Parted Hair added, "Uncle, I really think you’ve mistaken us!" I turned to leave, but Mutton Chops grabbed my shoulder. The cashier waiting to check out was stunned by the scene. Parted Hair, who was particularly cunning, said to the cashier, "Miss, don’t be nervous. His dad owes us money. We thought we had a good relationship with him and didn’t make him write an IOU, but now he’s suddenly disappeared. We just want him to help us remind his dad about the debt. We’ll be leaving now." With that, they pulled me out of the supermarket.
Once outside, I saw Pang Hao and his group still standing across the street. Why weren’t they looking this way? I was anxious as I was dragged into an alley. I secretly reached into my pocket and, relying on my memory, managed to type out a text message: "Help!" Then I dialed A Fei’s number. Thankfully, I hadn’t switched to a touchscreen phone yet; since everyone was crazy about texting on their phones, I was very familiar with traditional keyboards. I sent the message while feeling extremely anxious, afraid they would discover what I was doing.
"Kid, you shouldn’t have messed with us," Mutton Chops said as he grabbed my collar and lifted me up with one hand. These three guys were particularly strong; one of their arms felt thicker than my leg. "Ah!" He threw me aside like a chicken. I fell heavily to the ground and felt my head go blank for a moment before finally regaining my senses. The three of them approached me with murderous intent on their faces. "Damn it! The more I think about it, the angrier I get!" Parted Hair kicked me hard in the stomach, sending me flying over a meter away. I suddenly felt breathless, curled up on the ground holding my stomach in agony as if my insides were being torn apart.
Mutton Chops pulled out a knife and walked toward me. "Kid, do you know what I do?" he sneered. "You dare mess with me? You’re tired of living!" "Old Leopard, why are you wasting time talking to him? Just stab him and let’s get out of here! Don’t dawdle!" Skinny Monkey urged from the side. Mutton Chops raised the knife, and I nearly fainted from fear, helplessly closing my eyes.
"Stop!" Suddenly a voice shouted from the alley entrance. The three of them turned around in panic. "Damn it! It’s the police! Kid, you’re lucky today; we’re leaving!" Mutton Chops covered his face and ran toward the other end of the alley. "Jie!" A Fei and his friends rushed over quickly. "Are you okay? Did they hurt you?" they asked anxiously. I breathed a sigh of relief and said, "I’m fine; thankfully you came in time! That Mutton Chops pulled out a knife at me; I really felt like I was on the edge of life and death." Remembering what had just happened made me shiver involuntarily.
"Kid, do you remember what those guys looked like?" the police officer asked me. I nodded vigorously: "As long as they don’t turn to ashes, I’ll recognize them!" "Then come back to the station with us to make a record."
After we left the station, I asked A Fei, "You found out about what happened because of my text message, right?" As soon as I finished speaking, they all laughed simultaneously. "What did you send me?" A Fei pulled out his phone and opened his inbox. When I looked closely at it, it showed two characters: Leave Name. "Haha! Luckily I'm sharp enough to guess you were in danger; otherwise, you might have been in real trouble," A Fei laughed. Well... it seems that Sogou input method has its downsides too. "Next time set our phone numbers as your first contact so that when you're in danger again, it’ll be easier for you to ask for help!" Shuai Dong suggested.
"Hey! No next time allowed!" I quickly interrupted Shuai Dong's hypothetical scenario. But really, next time when I'm out having fun again, I'll definitely feel a sense of crisis; I'm really regretting having provoked them back then. All I can do now is hope that those three uncles have vented their anger and will let me off.
I rubbed my still aching stomach as I returned home. As soon as I stepped through the door, my mom exclaimed, "Oh! Jie! Why do you look so disheveled? I just washed your clothes yesterday; how did they get like this?" Only then did I realize that after crawling around in the alley, I was covered in mud. "Oh... well... today A Fei and some of us went to play soccer; we had a great time so didn’t pay much attention to our clothes." My mind raced as I made excuses; sigh! Every time I have to use lies to brush off my parents makes me feel guilty.
Once inside my room, I lay down on my bed and took out my phone to log onto QQ. There were two unread messages from Xia Ying; she wasn’t online now—probably off eating or something—so after going invisible on QQ, I tossed my phone aside feeling exhausted. Tomorrow is the day when the main competition starts; all fifteen teams are elite squads selected from many candidates; I wonder how they will compete—will it be through drawing lots or group matches? Who knows?
The next morning we gathered at Lijing Park as usual; Xia Ying and Sha Xiaomei also came along. I noticed Xia Ying yawning repeatedly and suddenly felt a pang of sympathy for her. "Silly girl! If you can’t get up then don’t come! It’s so comfortable sleeping at home; why would you want to come here feeling miserable just to watch a match?" I walked over and playfully poked her nose while saying this.
Xia Ying smiled sheepishly and replied, "Hehe! What if you guys can’t win without me?" I smiled without saying anything back; this silly girl doesn’t realize that if she gets sick then I'll be even more distracted during the match.
