As soon as I entered the studio, Ting Ting hurried over.
" sister Meng, the contract from Xing Ya has come in. You need to confirm it as soon as possible."
"Okay, I understand." I shifted my gaze from Ting Ting to Shen Mo, who was standing behind her.
"You can take a look around with Ting Ting for now. I'll join you once I'm done."
With that, I turned and headed upstairs.
There were some details in the contract that required a phone call, which delayed me for a bit.
I glanced at my phone and quickened my pace.
Shen Mo was notoriously impatient and hated waiting for others.
Before I even reached the exhibition area, I could faintly hear Ting Ting proudly introducing:
"This is sister Meng's award-winning piece, Diana. She's the only Chinese artist to have received this award..."
Shen Mo interrupted her with something I couldn't quite catch.
Ting Ting seemed taken aback, her tone becoming somewhat flustered: "This is sister Meng ’s... most cherished..."
At that moment, I was only about five meters away from them, and in front of them lay a beautifully crafted necklace in a glass display case.
Under the lights, the diamonds sparkled even more brilliantly.
This necklace represented three years of my hard work, countless days and nights of effort and sweat; it was my most treasured creation.
I often found myself stopping here, gazing at it for a long time.
"What's wrong?" I took a moment to compose myself before speaking slowly.
Seeing me arrive, Ting Ting seemed to find solace and hid behind me, her voice tinged with a hint of grievance: " sister Meng, Mr. Shen wants Diana!"
I turned to look at Shen Mo; his face revealed no emotion whatsoever.
I gently patted Ting Ting on the shoulder and said softly, "I'll handle this; you can go back to your tasks."
Reluctantly, she left, leaving only Shen Mo and me in the vast exhibition area, creating a subtly tense atmosphere.
"Have you ever worn it?" Shen Mo's tone was calm, like still water with no ripples.
I shook my head lightly, "No."
He seemed quite pleased with the answer, a hint of a smile curling at the corners of his mouth. "Very well, name your price!"
I was momentarily taken aback, frozen in place.
Noticing my hesitation, he added, "There's an important client who really likes your designs."
A sharp pang shot through my heart. "What if I refuse?"
The atmosphere seemed to freeze, and I watched as the smile vanished from his lips, his gaze turning icy.
He fixed his eyes on me and said slowly, "Isn't the purpose of designing a necklace for someone to wear it?"
I felt as if I had fallen into an ice cellar, a chill spreading from my feet to my heart.
Time ticked by slowly as we remained locked in this standoff.
"Fine..." I finally relented.
I knew I couldn't refuse Shen Mo. Just like three years ago, when I won an award for my design of Diana, his casual "marry me" had made me abandon countless offers from royal jewelers that others could only dream of.
Like all our previous disagreements, this one too would end with my concession.
I stared blankly at the empty glass display case, my thoughts drifting until Ting Ting's exclamation pulled me back to reality.
"How could he do this?" Ting Ting's voice was filled with anger and concern.
My heart felt as if it were being torn apart, the pain making it hard to breathe.
A week later, I received a message from an unknown number: "Miss Xia, I think it's time for us to meet."
The text included a time and address, along with a photo. In the picture, Shen Mo was wearing a soft bathrobe, sound asleep.
