After I came out of the gym with A Fei, Ouyang called out to me from behind, "Ouyang, what's up?" I turned around and asked him. "Nothing much, I heard you guys were hanging out with Xia Ying yesterday. Did you find out who she likes?" Ouyang asked, looking down. Sigh! This Ouyang is like a middle-aged woman, always fixated on this matter, so 'feminine.' "Yeah, I found out. It's a tall, handsome, and wealthy guy, and I heard they are already dating." I really didn't want to discuss this with him anymore, so I just let him down gently. "Oh..." Ouyang's heart was clearly broken: "Then please tell Xia Ying that I, Ouyang Shangqiang, wish her happiness!" He turned and walked away. "You guys hung out with Xia Ying yesterday? Why did Ouyang know about it but not tell me? Not enough of a bro!" I punched him lightly in the chest. I smiled but didn't say anything; I just felt a bit sorry for Ouyang as I watched his back fade away.
After arriving at the classroom,
Shuai Dong was chatting with Yin Long. I quietly walked over and overheard him saying: "Hey, Yin Long, do you know? Yesterday, Pang Hao and I went hiking with three beautiful girls..." "Shi Zhidong!!" I shouted from behind. It made me angry; it turned out that Shuai Dong's overly nosy mouth had spread the news. Shuai Dong was startled and slowly turned around, looking flustered: "A Fei, you guys are back..." I shot him a glare and said nothing as I returned to my seat. Xia Ying wasn't there; I didn't know where she had gone crazy again. I opened my phone and logged onto QQ; Xue Er (Sha Xiaomei) and Cookie were both offline. I didn't care whether Sha Xiaomei was online or not because I didn't want to chat with her anymore; that feeling of being confidants had long disappeared. The Ice Man wasn't there either. I took out my headphones, plugged them into my phone, and listened to music. Last night, I specifically searched for the song that Xia Ying played for me on the bus; it turned out to be "Whisper" by Supreme League. I opened it and listened quietly.
After training in the afternoon, Teacher Qiu told us to get a good night's sleep because we would be going to Sangyue High School for an away game tomorrow and needed to be in good spirits. A Fei and I rode our bikes out of school. "A Fei, after yesterday's match, I asked Teacher Qiu; the team we competed against was Hejiang playing at home against Puyou High School. The Ice Man should definitely be one of those two teams." Suddenly remembering this matter, I said. "Yeah, during today's training, I also asked Teacher Qiu; yesterday's match result was Hejiang defeating Puyou 71-65. So when we talk to the Ice Man later, we just need to ask if they won or lost." A Fei agreed. We were becoming quite the detectives; our reasoning and guessing skills were getting sharper. I really regretted not studying psychology.
That night, lying on my bed while opening QQ and going invisible mode, the Ice Man was indeed online. I greeted him: "Ice Man!" He replied quickly: "Yeah, what are you doing?" I answered: "Just lying on my bed. How did your game go today?" The Ice Man was silent for a moment: "Game? We didn't have a game." He was still pretending! "I saw your status," I told him. The Ice Man quickly replied: "Oh, that? That was for my favorite NBA team Miami Heat." I seriously doubted that but since he said so, I felt embarrassed to ask further. After chatting casually for a bit, I made an excuse to log off; it was better to get a good night's sleep since we had a tough game ahead tomorrow at Sangyue's home court where they would surely launch their final counterattack because this was their last chance.
In the morning, A Fei arrived early. We dropped our bags at school and headed straight for the gym. Just as we stepped out of the classroom door, Xia Ying along with Three Sisters and Shuai Dong and Pang Hao chased after us shouting: "Gemini Stars, go for it!" We stopped in our tracks and turned around smiling while making a cheering gesture before continuing our run towards the gym. When we arrived, Zhongqi Senior and the others had already gathered early; Ji Fang was wrapping his ankle with bandages nearby. After a while, Teacher Qiu arrived,
shouting at us: "Team members, are you ready?!" "Ready!" We responded in unison. "Let's go!" With Teacher Qiu's command, we walked outside the school gates. As we reached the school entrance, I casually looked back and noticed Sha Xiaomei watching our team from the second floor. I whispered in A Fei's ear: "A Fei, look back..." A Fei turned around and saw Sha Xiaomei in the distance; she waved vigorously at him when she saw him turn back. A Fei waved back in response. Sigh! These two always show off their sweetness in public; it's really unbearable. After a while, the school bus arrived; we boarded one by one. I chose a window seat as usual while A Fei sat next to me. I noticed Teacher Qiu sitting in the front row seat so I secretly took out my phone and turned it on while setting all sounds including key tones and ringtones to silent mode. Just as I finished adjusting it, suddenly a text message came through from Xia Ying saying: 'Great romantic hero! No matter what the outcome is, just do your best; we will always support you.' That was quite thoughtful of Xia Ying! I replied with two words: 'Got it!' then turned off my phone.
"Why only reply with two words?" A Fei suddenly said beside me which startled me. "A Fei bro! Do you know it's very impolite to spy on someone else's privacy?" As I put my phone away while talking to him he replied: "Isn't it worse that all six of you collectively spied on me talking with Sha Xiaomei?" A Fei looked at me; how could he know we were spying on them? No way! It must have been Shuai Dong who blabbed too much again! Speechless, I turned my head towards the car window to continue enjoying the scenery.
After twenty minutes of driving, we arrived at our destination: Sangyue High School. This school looked impressive; even its entrance was much prettier than Twenty-Four Middle School's entrance. After entering through the school gate where students were attending morning reading classes making the campus appear spacious amidst their loud reading voices as we passed through layers of teaching buildings guided by our teacher towards the gymnasium. Once inside the Locker Room after dropping off our bags heading towards the court to familiarize ourselves with it upon arrival at the court where opposing players were warming up; Zhao Ziyang nodded politely at us when he saw us arrive while others like Liang Yuhao and Li Dongdong showed us expressions of defiance upon seeing us—hmph! Just wait until we beat you into pieces!
"Iron Tower" Sun Yi sat on the bench with his right arm wrapped in bandages looking pale indicating he wouldn't be able to play this time around either. With the referee's whistle signaling the start of the first quarter officially beginning both teams gradually took to the court where they sent out their starting lineup consisting of Zhao Ziyang, Li Dongdong, Liang Yuhao, Zhou Mingliang and Lu Lei while we sent Zhongqi Senior along with myself A Fei Zhang Ruizhi and Bing Ge as our lineup in response—what surprised me was that A Fei actually replaced Zhang Jun playing as small forward which lowered our average height significantly but knowing Teacher Qiu had his own strategy behind this decision gave me some reassurance.
The referee designated Bing Ge and Lu Lei for tip-off where Bing Ge jumped getting possession into my hands—I passed it over to Zhongqi Senior who organized our offense as he dribbled into their half before returning it back to me facing Li Dongdong who stood six centimeters taller than me—I passed it under his nose into A Fei waiting on right side of paint area where he received but missed his shot—Zhou Mingliang grabbed the rebound passing it out to Zhao Ziyang who caught it at arc top jumping up shooting—score! Within one minute after tip-off Zhao Ziyang opened up scoring for this match with a three-pointer contributing 1 point 1 assist along with 2 steals resulting in double-double performance—wonder how he will perform throughout this game?
After our inbound play Zhongqi Senior controlled ball long passing Zhang Ruizhi who made an error allowing Zhao Ziyang intercepting quickly attacking passing suddenly over to Li Dongdong waiting on right wing—Li Dongdong received taking two steps forward hitting mid-range jumper—we got hit hard right off bat trailing 0-5! During our next inbound play Zhongqi Senior slowed down tempo playing half-court offense making fake shot motion before passing ball over to me—I quickly attacked towards basket where Li Dongdong used his height advantage blocking forward—I faked twice then passed ball over from his right side into Bing Ge waiting underneath—Bing Ge received scoring with hook shot... In this quarter both offensively defensively we fought fiercely—Sun Yi sat on bench watching everything unfold anxiously alternating between standing sitting—the first quarter ended with us leading Sangyue by four points 19-15.
After leaving court Teacher Qiu commented: “Not bad! Since their Iron Tower Sun Yi cannot participate Sangyue’s inside line does not hold an advantage—Yan Bing Rui Zhi’s experience physical attributes slightly surpass Sangyue’s Lu Lei Zhou Mingliang thus giving us upper hand—using Xiang Jie A Fei playing positions two three is quite risky attempt but seems like ‘height strategy’ works well this time however…” Teacher Qiu analyzed carefully noting despite lacking height our agility compensated yet being short doesn’t guarantee total advantage—it’s half-half.
With referee’s whistle signaling start of Second Quarter after inbound play Zhongqi Senior dribbled past half-court outside three-point line suddenly accelerating towards basket—Zhao Ziyang quickly followed suit—Zhongqi Senior reached right side of paint directly passing ball into Bing Ge who easily scored layup—Zhao Ziyang unwillingly retaliated quickly pushing inside after inbounding ball preparing for layup when Zhongqi Senior Bing Ge jumped up defending—Zhao Ziyang unexpectedly passed backward towards Liang Yuhao who jumped up dunking beautifully executed teamwork! Their chemistry truly remarkable!
However these two weren’t done yet: With less than three minutes remaining Second Quarter during our inbound play Zhongqi Senior dribbled past mid-court passing over to A Fei who charged towards free-throw line jumping shooting unexpectedly getting blocked by Li Dongdong sending ball flying into Zhao Ziyang’s hands who rushed downcourt executing fast break scoring effortlessly—Teacher Qiu called timeout stating “Coach Fu Guoqiang’s strategy utilizing height indeed effective—we need raise height now Ji Fang replace Xiang Jie Zhang Jun replace A Fei.” The exchange between Teacher Qiu Fu Guoqiang became intense.
Timeout concluded remaining two minutes Second Quarter belonged to us—Zhongqi Senior held ball nearly exhausting shot clock before hitting three-pointer from arc top after which Zhao Ziyang passed ball over Li Dongdong bending down controlling ball then suddenly returning pass back Zhao Ziyang who caught zero-degree angle shooting—the referee blew whistle as Zhongqi Senior rushed over committing foul outside three-point line!! Zhao Ziyang’s shot arced beautifully sinking cleanly into net scoring +1!! Zhao Ziyang clenched fists pounding chest twice releasing pent-up frustration within himself.
