The Legend of the Immortals Prequel: Wilderness Journey
That night, the moon was bright and the stars sparse, and the cold wind howled, making the desolation of the Wilderness particularly evident. The temperature was much lower than during the day, and even though the five members of the Azure Cloud Sect were cultivators who were not afraid of severe cold or heat, they still felt a hint of chill.
Tian Buyi lay on the ground, tossing and turning several times, but he still could not fall asleep. Various images kept flashing through his mind, with the most prominent being the hardships and difficulties encountered during this journey into the wilderness. There were several moments that were indeed extremely dangerous; if it weren't for his fellow disciples coming to his aid—most notably Ten Thousand Swords in One—Tian Buyi felt he might have already died on the way.
Thinking of this, Tian Buyi couldn't help but feel admiration for Wan Shixiong. Throughout this perilous journey, including himself and the other four, everyone had experienced moments of despair and distress. Only Ten Thousand Swords in One remained steadfast, seemingly unshakeable by any hardship or danger. No matter how formidable the enemies or how fierce and strange the beasts were, he could not be defeated. He led four young disciples westward into the wilderness.
Moreover, during this time, Ten Thousand Swords in One had been meticulously teaching the four of them, almost selflessly sharing his insights and experiences in cultivation.
The four who were able to follow him were certainly not fools. Coupled with their intense life-and-death trials, all four had made significant progress in their cultivation during this period.
Such a heroic figure truly inspires awe and admiration. At least at this moment, as Tian Buyi reflected on their journey, he couldn't help but feel a surge of emotions; suddenly he felt that even if Wan Shixiong decided to venture up the mountain to investigate after dawn, he would have no fear. That sense of ambition within him seemed capable of looking down upon everything.
Lost in thought, Tian Buyi's mind drifted far away again as he recalled the days on Azure Cloud Mountain. Suddenly, a beautiful and charming figure leaped into his mind—it was Su Ru.
Just thinking of that lovely face made Tian Buyi feel as if his body had lightened a few degrees; warmth spread through his heart as an overwhelming sense of longing surged within him.
He wondered how Junior Sister Su was doing now and what she might be up to.
If all went well, upon returning to Azure Cloud Mountain this time, the credit would undoubtedly belong to Wan Shixiong—no one could take that away from him. However, he thought he could also bask in some glory by following Wan Shixiong. Perhaps then… Junior Sister Su would see him in a different light?
A sudden sweetness filled his heart as Tian Buyi found himself grinning foolishly. After a moment, he suddenly snapped back to reality, quickly suppressing his smile. He nervously glanced around and found that several people nearby were already asleep; no one had noticed his silly expression. He let out a sigh of relief.
Just as he closed his eyes, preparing to try to sleep again, a faint roar suddenly echoed from somewhere in the distance. The sound was not loud; carried by the wind, it was quite subtle. If it weren't for the deep silence of the night, even someone as perceptive as Tian Buyi would likely not have heard it.
However, upon hearing it, Tian Buyi was taken aback and sat up, only to find that everyone else around him, including Wan Shixiong, was still resting and seemed unaware of this sudden sound.
Tian Buyi furrowed his brow and listened for a while longer, but aside from that initial roar, the sound had vanished. Apart from the cold wind of the Wilderness at night, there were no other noises. Tian Buyi felt a bit hesitant and wondered if he had misheard.
Feeling uneasy, he listened carefully for a while longer, but aside from the first sound, nothing else reached their hidden spot in the valley. Tian Buyi shook his head and lay back down; however, this time he found it even harder to fall asleep.
His mind was flooded with various thoughts, bizarre and strange, yet he could not find any sense of drowsiness. Eventually, Tian Buyi decided not to sleep at all. He looked up at the bright moon hanging in the clear night sky, got up from the ground, and casually walked out of the valley.
The wind and sand of the Wilderness were cold and coarse, but Tian Buyi paid it no mind. As he walked against the wind out of the valley, he saw that under the moonlight in the night, the vast wilderness seemed to be draped in a white cloak, appearing particularly magnificent and strangely beautiful.
This scenery was entirely different from the enchanting Azure Cloud Mountain with its lush greenery. The desolate landscape here contained a more profound sense of rugged grandeur; even under the night sky, it seemed to carry a more somber aura than the fertile lands of Middle-earth.
As Tian Buyi gazed at this expanse of land, he suddenly felt his heart expand slightly compared to before. He could hardly suppress an impulse to let out a long howl towards this boundless wilderness. Fortunately, his cautious nature held him back; he exhaled deeply and prepared to return to rest. But just then, a long howl suddenly erupted from ahead—a sound not loud but seemingly coming from a considerable distance.
Tian Buyi's eyes brightened instantly. He recognized that this sound was almost identical to what he had heard earlier; it appeared that something was indeed happening in this night. He wanted to go back and inform his fellow disciples but hesitated again. If it turned out to be just an ordinary thief over there, wouldn’t it be an overreaction to gather everyone?
It was important to remember that they were currently beneath Demon Mountain; caution was paramount.
Quickly dismissing the thought of calling everyone over, Tian Buyi decided that since there was movement over there, he should check it out himself. Even if something unexpected occurred, he could alert his fellow disciples early on.
With this thought in mind, Tian Buyi no longer hesitated. He leaped into action and sped toward where the shouting had come from. His somewhat stout figure raced swiftly across the moonlit wilderness, resembling a rather comical fat horse.
Meanwhile, far away in the land of Middle-earth, on Azure Cloud Mountain, under the light of an oil lamp in a small temple, Su Ru rested her chin on her hand but did not fall asleep. Her bright eyes sparkled like stars as she gazed at the flickering candle flame before her. The firelight reflected in her clear eyes, resembling beautiful fireworks.
She watched the flame for a long time, seemingly lost in thought. Sometimes her lips pressed together, and at other times a faint smile appeared, like a vibrant flower quietly blooming its petals in the gentle night.
After a while, she got up and walked to the window. Pushing it open, she saw the bright full moon in the sky. Suddenly, she smiled and softly murmured, "Wan Shixiong..."
After a moment, it seemed she remembered something else. She pursed her lips, looking somewhat displeased, but there was still a hint of concern in her expression because her demeanor remained gentle. She quietly muttered, "Hmm... you better not hold Wan Shixiong back, you fat brat! And everyone must come back safe..."
Having said this, she clasped her hands together in front of her chest and gazed at the bright moon with determination, bowing deeply.
The moonlight poured down like water, illuminating her and reflecting a dazzling beauty that quietly blossomed in the cool night.
