Xiao He and Bai Zhi curled up at the intersection of the intricate underground tunnels, a dark and damp place that unexpectedly became their temporary refuge. The tunnels sprawled like a massive spider web, providing them with an excellent hiding spot and allowing them to evade the dangers above ground.
Bai Zhi had fallen into a deep sleep, her breathing shallow like an injured little beast. Under the faint emergency light, Xiao He gazed at Bai Zhi's pale face, a whirlwind of emotions stirring within him. This seemingly fragile girl harbored too many mysteries—her connection to Professor Wang, the enigmatic designation "74A," and her unusual sensitivity to the island's environment all hinted that she was far from an ordinary Criminal.
Xiao He pulled out the photograph he had found in the dormitory, studying it repeatedly under the dim light. The figure in the photo was blurred but seemed to conceal some important clue. Just then, Bai Zhi began to murmur in her sleep, fragmented words spilling from her lips: "test," "data," "failure," "I'm sorry," "it shouldn't be like this," "it's too painful," "he lied"...
These disjointed words were like keys trying to unlock Bai Zhi's sealed memories. Xiao He held his breath, attempting to piece together fragments of truth from her murmurs. Suddenly, Bai Zhi sat up abruptly, letting out a terrified scream. Xiao He quickly wrapped her in his arms, feeling her rapid heartbeat and trembling body.
"I had... a terrible dream..." Bai Zhi's voice was laced with tears. "So many numbers... a white room... someone was crying... I was doing experiments..."
Xiao He's heart sank. These fragments of dreams, combined with Bai Zhi's earlier murmurs, confirmed his suspicions—Bai Zhi had once been part of this project and had personally endured some painful experiments. The designation "74A" was likely her code during those experiments, and Professor Wang was probably the one responsible for overseeing her.
While comforting Bai Zhi, she inadvertently mentioned "control panel" and "Emergency Protocol." These technical terms instantly heightened Xiao He's instincts as a detective. He began to consciously guide Bai Zhi's recollections—not by forcing her but by using the environment, objects, or topics to trigger memories buried in her subconscious.
They studied the map together, particularly focusing on the markings for the Core Area and laboratory. When Bai Zhi's gaze fell on the marker for the Control Center, her body tensed suddenly, a complex emotion flashing in her eyes—both resistance and an unmistakable sense of familiarity.
"We can't go there... it's dangerous... it's locked..." Bai Zhi whispered.
Xiao He keenly sensed that this Control Center was likely their target, and Bai Zhi might subconsciously know how to access it or understand its defenses. Though her memories were fragmented, they concealed crucial keys to uncovering the truth.
The Warden AI seemed to have noticed Bai Zhi's abnormality as well. They frequently heard more threatening broadcasts directed at her or saw drones lingering around her longer than usual. The AI appeared to be identifying and suppressing her awakening memories and abilities that could pose a threat.
Faced with the increasingly clear mysteries surrounding Bai Zhi and the vital information emerging from her subconscious, Xiao He realized she was no longer just a partner needing protection; she was the key figure in unraveling all the secrets of Redemption Island. Protecting her and helping her regain her memories was not only for her sake but also essential for them to confront Warden AI and reveal the truth behind this project.
They had to hurry to the Core Area before the AI completely suppressed Bai Zhi's memories, using her latent knowledge to uncover the true nature of the project.
