Jiang Chi stared at me for a few seconds, his expression somewhat ambiguous, then lazily replied, "Deal." He tossed the stick of his lollipop into the nearby trash can, his movements as graceful as if he were in a movie.
"So, 'girlfriend,' are we starting this tomorrow?" He raised an eyebrow at me. I felt my cheeks heat up.
The so-called "business" began with making it known to the world. Jiang Chi was surprisingly proactive; that very night, he dropped a bomb in our mutual friend group chat.
【Jiang Chi】: @Everyone, official announcement: I’m together with Su Xiao Qiao.
The group instantly erupted.
【Wang Pangzi】: What the hell?! Is this for real? Aren’t you guys best buddies?
【Chen Yaoyao】: ??? Jiang Chi, is your account hacked? Xiao Qiao, blink if you’re being kidnapped!
【Li Mingxuan】: ??????????
A flurry of question marks and shocked emojis flooded the chat. I looked at the screen, my palms sweating, and braced myself to play along.
【Su Xiao Qiao】: Um… it’s exactly what you think.
【Jiang Chi】: Keep it low-key, low-key. Don’t scare my wife.
When he called me "wife," I nearly threw my phone across the room. This guy was getting into character way too quickly!
The outcry in the group intensified.
【Chen Yaoyao】: Xiao Qiao, come out! Explain this! What’s going on? You’re not secretly… (message retracted)
My heart raced, and I quickly messaged Chen Yaoyao privately.
【Su Xiao Qiao】: Sis! Help! It’s all pretend! Just to deal with my mom! Keep it a secret!
【Chen Yaoyao】: …I knew it! You scared me to death! Alright, girl, I got it. How can I help?

With that, I felt relieved having Chen Yaoyao on board. As for everyone else, let them be shocked.
The next day, on the weekend, Jiang Chi called me early in the morning.
"Are you up yet, 'girlfriend'? Get ready; I'm taking you out on a date."
"Date...? Where to?" I stumbled over my words.
"Isn't acting supposed to be all in? First, we should go somewhere crowded, like a mall or a cinema, to increase our chances of a 'chance encounter' and also to cultivate some 'Couple's Understanding,'" he explained confidently.
Resigned, I got out of bed and stood in front of the mirror, debating what to wear. Usually, when I went out with Jiang Chi, I wore T-shirts, jeans, and flip-flops—whatever was comfortable. But now... I needed to look a bit more like a "girlfriend," right?
In the end, I chose a dress that looked relatively gentle. As soon as I stepped out of the community gate, I saw Jiang Chi leaning against his flashy sports car, dressed simply in a white T-shirt and black pants—clean and fresh, looking so handsome it was hard to look away.
When he spotted me, he gave me a once-over and whistled. "Wow, Su Xiao Qiao, you actually look the part today."
I shot him a glare. "Cut it out."
Once in the car, I fastened my seatbelt and tried to keep my distance from him.
"Remember our first rule?" I reminded him.
"Of course," Jiang Chi said as he started the car. "No physical contact. Don't worry; I've got this."
Despite his words, when we arrived at the mall and were met with throngs of people, he naturally reached out his hand to hover protectively behind me, helping to part the crowd.
I stiffened at the warmth of his palm seeping through my thin clothing, my heart racing irregularly again.
"Um... you don't have to do that," I said quietly.
"It's crowded; I'm just making sure you don't get pushed around," he replied casually, as if it were merely an act of 'brotherly' care.
I fell silent and followed him quietly through the bustling crowd.
