The first date had come to an end.
On the way home, I suddenly mustered the courage to ask, "Can we meet again next time?"
Liu Yun turned her head and smiled brightly, "Of course! We're friends now!"
At that moment, I felt something quietly sprouting in my heart.
It was a strange feeling.
In the days that followed, I began to frequently invite Liu Yun out. Each time we met, I discovered new traits about her; she loved to laugh, adored small animals, was warm-hearted towards strangers, and approached tasks with both enthusiasm and meticulous care.
Gradually, I realized I couldn't imagine my life without her. I also started helping out at her little shop, accompanying her to the nursing home to teach the elderly how to dance, and even learned to cook some simple home dishes for her.
Zhang Li teased me about my transformation, "Yang Jianyun, have you finally woken up?"
I knew it was all because of Liu Yun.
One evening three months later, Liu Yun and I went to see a movie together. After the film ended, we strolled slowly along the riverbank, the night breeze gently brushing against us, and the surface of the river reflecting countless stars.
"Liu Yun," I took a deep breath, "let's be together."
Liu Yun stopped in her tracks, looking at me in surprise, "What?"
"I mean, I like you and want to be with you."
I gathered my courage and looked directly into her eyes, "Will you be my girlfriend?"
Liu Yun was silent for a few seconds before suddenly bursting into laughter, "Yang Jianyun, your confession is way too direct! There's no buildup at all."
I was momentarily at a loss for words, feeling anxious inside. But then I saw Liu Yun step closer, rise on her toes, and gently kiss my cheek.
"I will," she whispered softly.
Dating Liu Yun felt like a dream. This introverted person who never liked going out began to frequent shopping malls and cinemas, even visiting her little shop often.
Liu Yun's little shop was not big, located in a small alley in the city center, selling handmade accessories and trinkets. I often went there to sit and help her organize the merchandise, and sometimes chatted with customers.
"You are quite interesting," Liu Yun often said to me with a smile. "You usually keep quiet, but once you start talking about your field, you can't stop."
I could only smile awkwardly. "Maybe it's only in familiar territory that I can find my confidence."
"Then I must be your other familiar territory," she said with a mischievous wink.
Liu Yun had many friends; it seemed like every few days someone would come by the shop to chat or invite her out. As for me, aside from a few close colleagues, I hardly had a social circle. Sometimes, I worried that I couldn't keep up with her pace.
"What are you worried about?" Liu Yun laughed when she heard my concerns. "It's precisely because we are different that we can learn from each other and grow together!"
Her words made my worries dissipate.
After dating for a year, on an ordinary weekend evening, we were snuggled up on the small sofa in her shop watching a movie. Suddenly, Liu Yun pressed the pause button and turned to look at me.
"Yang Jianyun, we've been dating for a year now. What do you think our future will be like?" Her expression was unusually serious.
I was taken aback, my heart racing suddenly. Was she hinting at something?
"I... I think it's pretty good," I stammered. "What about you?"
"I've been thinking," Liu Yun gazed into my eyes, "should we consider getting married?"
