Time seemed to stretch indefinitely as Hui Nai awoke from her weary slumber. The first thing she noticed was the blanket that Ryoji had draped over her at some point. At least Ryoji still cared for her. 0

She recalled, in a hazy memory of drifting off to sleep, Ryoji had suggested, "Let's go out for dinner together." 0

With that thought in mind, she decided to accompany Ryoji for a nice meal as a way of reconciling. 0

Having dinner together could help maintain and strengthen their relationship. After all, they had both been so busy lately that there had been little time or opportunity for meaningful communication, leading to many misunderstandings. 0

She gently rose and set out to find Ryoji. The living room and bedroom were shrouded in darkness, and she could see nothing at all. Had Ryoji gone out? Hui Nai called out, "Ryoji! Ryoji! Where are you? Why haven't you turned on the lights?" 0

A noise came from the direction of the kitchen—though faint, it was jarring in the stillness of the night. Hui Nai hurriedly made her way over and switched on the kitchen wall light. The sight before her startled her. 0

Ryoji was sitting on the kitchen floor, surrounded by scattered empty bottles of alcohol. His disheveled hair and clothes, along with his bloodshot eyes and dazed expression, indicated he had drunk quite a bit. 0

Feeling a pang of heartache, she knelt down and embraced him tightly. "Ryoji, why did you drink so much? Why hurt yourself like this? Are you angry with me? Let’s not do this anymore, okay? Please forgive me. Let's go out for dinner together. You haven't eaten anything either; you must be hungry." 0

Looking up at Hui Nai, Ryoji's voice seemed to waver between drunkenness and lucidity. "It's no longer necessary." 0

"Huh?" Hui Nai instinctively glanced at the clock; it was nearly midnight—too late indeed. But she remained patient as she urged Ryoji, "But we can still find somewhere to eat dinner. Or I can cook something for you. It’s a bit late, but it’s better than not eating at all." She stood up, ready to prepare a belated meal. 0

"No need." This time, Ryoji's voice was remarkably clear. "I mean, we don’t need to have dinner together anymore." 0

Hui Nai momentarily struggled to process his words and hesitantly asked, "Ryoji, what do you mean by that?" 0

"There's no point in this. Hui Nai, don't you understand? I, Hiroshi Hirota, want to break up with you." 0

Ryoji's face showed a sorrowful expression. "Hui Nai, I've always loved you. But why have we come to this point? I'm exhausted and can't hold on any longer. It's not your fault. I just can't see any hope and want to give up. I hope we can still be good friends. I will always love you, but in a way that allows us to coexist peacefully." 0

"This is for the best for both of us. Hui Nai, you must be happy from now on." 0

Ryoji's face, marked by that sorrowful smile, seemed to age in an instant. 0

Hui Nai could barely stand, her frail body swaying unsteadily. She shook her head in despair, unable to believe what she had just heard. 0

But it was clear and undeniable that Ryoji had spoken those words, and it seemed he would not change his mind. 0

After all, they were only engaged. In this day and age, with such a high divorce rate, breaking off an engagement was nothing remarkable. 0

For Hui Nai, since love was lost, there was no meaning left in life. The phrase "my heart is like dead ash" perfectly described her state of mind at that moment. 0

Tears streaming down her face, Hui Nai quietly lay down on the bed. Ryoji had not come upstairs; he was probably still sitting on the kitchen floor drinking. Perhaps he was simply tired of everything and no longer wished to have any contact with her. 0

Maybe this would be the last time she slept in this bed. 0

Heartbroken, Hui Nai couldn't even calm her pain, let alone fall asleep. The feeling was truly unbearable. 0

Thoughts of death even crossed her mind. This was not the first time. 0

Hui Nai had always been a brave girl, willing to sacrifice her life for love. But now that love was gone, life no longer held any value for her. 0
