Qing He decided to visit Hui Nai at her residence—he even knew her address and had been there many times before.
Just as he turned to lock the door, a voice suddenly came from behind him: “No need to lock it, please open the door, Qing He. Let’s talk inside.”
It was Hui Nai's voice, but it sounded completely different from her usual soft and sweet tone; it was cold, as if it had emerged from the depths of a dark abyss.
However, Qing He didn’t have time to dwell on that. He was finally seeing Hui Nai again, and he could finally set aside the worry that had been hanging over him. Moreover, she seemed fine, not at all like someone who had suffered from the failed hypnosis last time. Qing He felt a surge of happiness: “Ah, Hui Nai, it’s you! Why are you here so late? I thought you weren’t coming. Why didn’t you come for hypnosis today?”
With a hint of moonlight illuminating the room, Hui Nai’s face appeared equally cold. She maintained her same tone as she replied, “Well, I’m here now. Is that alright?”
“I see.” Qing He hesitated; after all, it was quite late. But seeing Hui Nai’s expression made him change his words: “That’s fine. Although it’s late, I can walk you home.” The thought of strolling through the night streets with Hui Nai made Qing He feel that this wasn’t such a bad thing after all. In fact, he felt a bit cheerful.
He opened the door again and invited Hui Nai inside.
“Even though it’s late, we can still do the hypnosis, or we could shorten the session. There’s no need to rush, Hui Nai; these things should be approached slowly.” After handing her a glass of water, Qing He continued, “It’s truly remarkable that you’ve made such significant improvements through hypnosis. Honestly, even as a psychologist, I find it quite astonishing. It must be due to your strong determination and willpower. By the way, you haven’t mentioned why you were so late today.”
Hui Nai held the glass of water but showed no intention of drinking from it. She remained silent since entering the room and didn’t react at all to Qing He’s usual chatter. Only when faced with his direct question did she finally speak: “The reason I’m only meeting Doctor Qing He now is that there are some matters I cannot confirm yet. I needed to think and recall them carefully before reaching any conclusions or decisions. That’s what delayed me.”
“Oh, I see.” Qing He quickly regained his focus. “So what is it about?”
Hui Nai stared at him without moving, her expression seeming to pierce through him, making Qing He feel uneasy all over. This really didn’t seem like the Hui Nai he knew.
Finally, Hui Nai spoke again: “Doctor Qing He seems quite unusual today.”
Embarrassed, Qing He smiled awkwardly, "Really? What’s unusual about it?"
"Doctor Qinghe is usually a calm person, but today, upon meeting, you seem extremely excited and nervous, to the point that it feels quite abnormal." Hui Nai's gaze was sharp, as if she were scanning him with piercing insight.
Qing He understood in his heart that it was probably his own unusual behavior that made Hui Nai react this way. Of course, he couldn't say that out loud, even as a joke. Under Hui Nai's intense gaze, Qing He felt like he was sitting on pins and needles. He stammered, "I’m not acting unusually at all. Rather, Hui Nai, you… seem quite different from usual."
Without responding to the doctor's words, Hui Nai continued on her own, "Is it because you did something wrong in the past and suddenly feel the possibility of being discovered? Is that why you're so restless?"
Such remarks were already quite rude. Qing He suppressed his discomfort and surprise, trying to ask calmly, "What makes you say that, Hui Nai? We've known each other for so long; you should have a good understanding of my character..."
"I realize I don't know you at all, Qing He-kun. Otherwise, I wouldn't have thought you capable of bringing danger into your home and harming Ryoji!" Hui Nai's firm words interrupted Qing He's explanation. Her eyes seemed to burn with fury; the hatred was unmistakable.
Feeling the weight of her gaze, Qing He shuddered. He stood up from his chair and argued loudly, "Hui Nai! What do you mean by that? I barely know Hirota-kun; there’s no animosity between us. Why would I want to kill him?"
However, as soon as he spoke, he regretted his words and almost covered his mouth to stop what had already been said. But it was too late. Hui Nai looked at him with a cold smile, filled with despair and rage: "I only said Doctor Qinghe harmed Ryoji; I never directly stated that you killed him."
The doctor fell back into his chair helplessly, his face filled with panic and despair after being exposed. He murmured as if questioning Hui Nai or perhaps speaking to himself, "You remember everything now?"
"Yes. I finally remembered everything. And I have to thank your hypnosis and that sudden ringing phone from last time." The same title was used again; however, the meaning behind it had completely changed in such a short time. Hui Nai began her painful recollection.
Returning to the night when everything happened—the night Hiroshi Hirota died.
