"Ah? What do you want from me?" Ye Chen exclaimed, his face filled with confusion as he instinctively closed the book. "Is there something you need?"
"Of course there is!" Lou Yu hurried over, his expression anxious and carrying an undeniable authority.
As he walked briskly, he spoke loudly, "Last night, were you the last person to see Muer? If you know where he went, you need to tell me quickly. General He is searching for him all over the Military Camp; they've nearly turned over every place within ten miles!"
Lou Yu reached Ye Chen and sat down aggressively on the bench beside him, slamming his long knife down with a loud thud. The blade clashed against the bench, producing a dull sound. Lou Yu's eyes glinted with a sharp coldness, like two blades aimed directly at Ye Chen.
Though Ye Chen had prepared himself with a response, when he met Lou Yu's icy gaze, his heart skipped a beat as if gripped by an invisible hand.
He instinctively shrank back slightly, avoiding eye contact for a moment before forcing himself to appear calm and composed.
Lou Yu exuded a decisiveness and aura of ruthlessness unique to soldiers. Even though he often wore a youthful, arrogant demeanor, it couldn't mask the bloodlust that surrounded him.
Having faced the battlefield, with armor stained in blood and hooves trampling corpses, such brutal experiences had matured this nineteen-year-old far beyond his peers.
Despite sometimes seeming oblivious to certain matters, it was undeniable that Lou Yu had blood on his hands, contrasting sharply with Ye Chen's stable life in the 21st century for over twenty years.
At that moment, Ye Chen found himself intimidated by Lou Yu's straightforward gaze.
Across from them sat Pei Guanjing, who furrowed his brows slightly. Ye Chen was his disciple, and he would not allow anyone to instill fear in him.
Thus, he set down the teacup he had just lifted.
The soft sound of it hitting the table drew Ye Chen's attention towards him.
Pei Guanjing's eyes were calm and emotionless as the moon. Yet strangely, Ye Chen felt a sense of protection emanating from him, like a small boat finding refuge in a stormy sea.
He recalled the life-saving talisman Pei Guanjing had given him last night: "As long as I'm here, he won't trouble you."
With that thought in mind, Ye Chen decided to leave this matter to Pei Guanjing and quietly stay behind him.
Lou Yu turned his head at the sound, his left leg resting on the ground while his right calf was propped on his left thigh. His posture was casual yet exuded an undeniable aura of authority.
"Doctor Pei," his voice revealed no emotion, "are you trying to steal someone from me?"
"What do you mean?" Pei Guanjing's tone was equally calm, betraying no hint of emotional fluctuation.
"Previously, Ye Chen was taken by you to the Medical Camp, and I let that slide. But now General He is injured, and his favored concubine Muer is missing. Before this, Muer only spoke to Ye Chen, making him highly suspicious from both personal and professional perspectives. I believe we have the right to hand him over to General He for questioning."
Pei Guanjing's gaze briefly flickered over to Ye Chen across the room, as if seeking his opinion.
Ye Chen shrank back slightly, feeling the need to defend himself; otherwise, their relationship could sour.
"I only spoke a few words with Muer. He has been taking calming medicine lately, and most of the other apprentices find it difficult to approach him. Besides, he doesn't like interacting with strangers. I’ve just been delivering medicinal meals to him during this time, which General He is aware of. He only talked to me a few times, and I don’t even know how I fainted. When I woke up, he was already gone."
Pei Guanjing withdrew his gaze, feeling he had grasped the general situation. It seemed everything was under his control; the secret letter sent to the Wolf Clan Leader had worked.
However, watching Ye Chen cower before Lou Yu, clutching at his clothes with a frightened expression, stirred an uncomfortable feeling within him.
Though Ye Chen was a Kun Ze, he was unlike any Kun Ze Pei Guanjing had ever encountered—brave, optimistic, clever, and quick-witted. He never panicked in difficult situations. Yet now, seeing Ye Chen hiding behind him with his small hand tugging at his garment and his head bowed low—his delicate neck resembling white jade—made Pei Guanjing's heart inexplicably itch.
Aside from that incident over half a month ago, Ye Chen had been smiling and approaching him every day for months. Even though Pei Guanjing had initially treated him coldly, Ye Chen persisted until he fully accepted him as a disciple.
But now he stood there with hunched shoulders, lacking even the courage to meet anyone's gaze.
The uncomfortable sensation grew stronger within him.
When did it become acceptable for others to bully his disciple?
"Ye Chen," he suddenly spoke up before he even realized what he was saying. "Come here."
Ye Chen looked up in surprise, and even Lou Yu turned to glance at Pei Guanjing with a look of astonishment.
Pei Guanjing maintained a calm expression, with no visible emotions flickering in his eyes. Yet, sitting there in his flowing robes, he naturally exuded a powerful aura. Though this presence seemed gentle, it was still impossible to ignore.
Ye Chen was only surprised for a moment before he immediately stood up and walked to Pei Guanjing's side. He obediently positioned himself behind him, lowering his head and refraining from looking at anyone else.
He understood clearly that despite his previous good relationship with Lou Yu, the current situation involving General He’s injury and the disappearance of the favored consort was tied to him. Even if Lou Yu wanted to help him out, he wouldn’t show favoritism in front of everyone.
Moreover, Lou Yu was a person who distinguished between public and private matters; he would only seek the truth.
Seeing this scene, Lou Yu let out a disdainful snort and said, “Hmph, I didn’t expect Doctor Pei to learn how to protect his own.”
Pei Guanjing’s response was to say nothing at all. Instead, he picked up the teacup on the table, holding the bottom with one hand and gently grasping the body with the other, slowly sipping his tea. His actions clearly conveyed to Lou Yu that he would indeed protect Ye Chen and would do so unwaveringly.
Lou Yu, feeling somewhat irritated, poured himself a cup of tea from the teapot on the table.
He understood that tonight, trying to get someone from Pei Guanjing would be futile. With Pei Guanjing’s demeanor, it seemed he was afraid that Lou Yu might bully Ye Chen, immediately calling Ye Chen to stand behind him.
But in reality, Lou Yu had merely cast a glance at Ye Chen.
Besides, given his relationship with Ye Chen, as long as he hadn’t done anything wrong, would he really harm Ye Chen?
