"Long Boss is quite respected around here," Shen Tong said quietly as he leaned closer to Lin Mingchang.
Lin Mingchang turned his head towards Shen Tong and whispered back, "It's more than that; I feel a sort of... helpless submission."
Long Tianming led the group to a relatively spacious stilt house and settled Lin Mingchang and the others in their accommodations. Then, Fang Zigui adjusted his shirt cuffs and suggested, "I would like to visit Miao Qing's grandfather. I’ve heard he is the Old Miao Doctor in the Village, and I’ve always been interested in Miao medicine. I just haven’t had the chance to communicate with a real Miao doctor until now, so it would be a great opportunity to consult him."
Long Tianming smiled and replied, "The Old Miao Doctor is indeed a treasure in the Village, but he has a peculiar temperament and may not be willing to see outsiders. I've already arranged dinner for you all; it’s in the stilt house next door, so don’t take too long."
"It’s no trouble," Fang Zigui said with a slight smile. "I’ll be back before dinner."
Fang Zigui followed the village path, asking for directions along the way, until he arrived at another independent stilt house at the other end of the Village. In front of the wooden house, several Bamboo Poles were planted in the ground, adorned with dried herbs and various animal bones. Under the eaves hung several uniquely shaped bamboo baskets.
Miao Qing was cooking dinner at the stove downstairs. Upon seeing Fang Zigui, she immediately wiped her hands on her apron and came over joyfully. She invited Fang Zigui inside, where he was greeted by a strong aroma of medicinal herbs.
The room was dimly lit, with only an oil lamp casting a faint glow. The Old Miao Doctor was dozing at a tea table when Miao Qing walked over with a smile and gently patted the old man’s shoulder.
"Grandpa, wake up! Don't sleep until after dinner! The doctor Fang I mentioned is here to see you!"
The Old Miao Doctor opened his eyes slowly, took a sip of tea, and then looked up at Fang Zigui. Fang Zigui quickly greeted him respectfully. Upon hearing that Fang Zigui came from a family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, the Old Miao Doctor became interested.
He instructed his granddaughter to fetch hot water for their guest's tea. The Old Miao Doctor was a short elderly Miao man with deeply etched wrinkles on his face, yet his eyes were bright and spirited. His fingers were rough and calloused from years of herb gathering. He accepted the hot water from Miao Qing and poured a cup of Miao tea for Fang Zigui.
The two chatted for a while about Miao medicine, discussing everything from herbal identification to the interactions between medicinal properties and compound formulations. Noticing that the Old Miao Doctor was gradually warming up to the conversation, Fang Zigui asked, "Sir, could you tell me about the Golden Money Bee?"
Upon hearing this question, the Old Miao Doctor locked eyes with Fang Zigui without saying a word. After a long pause, he slowly got up and walked to a corner cabinet to retrieve a small bamboo tube. Returning to the table, he brought the bamboo tube close to Fang Zigui's ear.
A buzzing sound emanated from the bamboo tube, and Fang Zigui immediately understood what was inside. "The Golden Money Bee is not only a source of honey but also a spiritual entity that can sense the essence of the world," the Old Apothecary said slowly. "They prefer the shade and avoid sunlight, being inherently sensitive. They should not be raised in large numbers. However, Long Tianming, being an outsider and only concerned with profit, does not understand this principle. He insists on establishing some beekeeping base on the mountain, disrupting Tian Ji!"
Fang Zigui quickly pressed on, "But Long Tianming's Golden Money Bee Project has been suspended because three people have already died. Have you heard about it?"
The Old Miao Doctor did not respond immediately; his gaze drifted out the window, where the dense forest was shrouded in twilight. After a long pause, he finally spoke, "The troubles caused by humans must ultimately be resolved by humans."
