Upon arriving at the Management Office, the plump director, who had previously been indifferent, greeted Jiang Tao with noticeably more warmth. He personally handed over a brand new Individual Business Owner business license, stamped with a red seal. "Xiao Jiang, do your best! The improvement of the market environment will also require you skilled and rule-abiding Individual Business Owners to set an example!"
Jiang Tao thanked him repeatedly, carefully accepting the license. This thin piece of paper signified that he was now a recognized legitimate operator by the state, and its importance was monumental! Lin Wei patiently assisted him in completing tax registration and other related procedures, reminding him of several important points.
As Jiang Tao stepped out of the Management Office, he felt his back straighten considerably. He looked at the license in his hand and then at Lin Wei walking beside him, filled with ambition.
"With the license in hand and funding secured, it's time to upgrade!"
He knew that his cramped stall in a corner was no longer sufficient for his growing business needs, especially for renovation work that required more space to store and handle old items. He needed a proper shop!
In the following days, Jiang Tao continued to operate his stall while actively searching for suitable storefronts around the market during his downtime after closing. He had a rough plan in mind: the shop couldn't be too far off the beaten path, or it would affect foot traffic; it didn't need to be too large but should at least have a workspace and a small display area; and the rent had to be reasonable since his funds were still quite limited.
After three or four days of searching and visiting more than ten places, he found that either the rent was too high, the location was poor, or the buildings were in disrepair. In these times, suitable storefronts were indeed scarce resources.
One evening, as he turned into a relatively quiet alley behind the market that wasn't too far from the main road, his eyes suddenly lit up. Not far from the entrance of the alley was a small storefront of about twenty square meters. The roll-up door was tightly shut, and a handwritten "For Rent" sign was posted on it with neat handwriting and a phone number.
Jiang Tao approached to take a closer look. The storefront appeared somewhat aged; the doors and windows were a bit worn, but the structure seemed intact, and there was enough space in front. He mentally scanned the interior and sensed that it had previously been a small grocery store that had since closed down.
"This is it!" Jiang Tao decided in his heart. Although its location couldn't compare to the main street of the market, it offered tranquility and sufficient space. Most importantly, it didn't seem too sought after, so perhaps there was room for negotiation on rent.
He pulled out a small notebook he carried with him and carefully noted down the rental phone number.
"I'll contact the landlord tomorrow! I hope I can secure this place!" Looking at the tightly shut roll-up door, he could almost envision "Jiang's Repair and Renovation Shop" opening there, filled with anticipation for the future.
The next morning, Jiang Tao's thoughts were not entirely on his repair stall. While dealing with a steady stream of customers, he mentally calculated how to secure that small storefront. The phone number he noted yesterday felt like a little hook that kept itching at him.
Finally making it to noon when customer traffic slowed slightly, he quickly found a secluded corner and pulled out the crumpled paper with the phone number. He walked into a public phone booth next to the market. In these times, private phones were still rare; most families didn't have one and relied on public phones for communication.
