Lin Mingchang spoke as he took out Doctor Thomson's notes from a cloth bag, flipping to the page that detailed the Golden Money Bee and handed it to Fang Zigui. He also mentioned a special method for extracting pure Bee Venom, but the notebook containing that method... is missing."
"Could it be that the murderer wanted to stop the Golden Money Bee Project and used Gu Poison to kill these people?" Ruan Xiaoshuang suggested her theory.
Shen Tong frowned, finding this reasoning somewhat unreasonable. "If that's the case, then why kill these three people? Shouldn't the murderer target Long Tianming, who initiated the project?"
"Perhaps..." Lin Mingchang leaned back in his chair, gazing out the window. "Maybe they weren't killed for participating in the project but because they discovered something they shouldn't have."
As the four were quietly discussing clues, the door curtain rustled, and a Miao girl approached with a bamboo basket. She had been frequently seen at the inn these past few days, coming and going to sell Miao Family snacks, so the four were already familiar with her.
The Miao girl appeared to be around seventeen or eighteen years old, wearing an exquisite silver headdress and colorful embroidered Miao clothing. She had bright eyes and a delicate face, exuding a unique charm and stubbornness typical of mountain girls with every smile and frown.
"Hello, brothers and sisters! Are you still awake? I just steamed some Miao Family tea snacks; would you like to try some?" she asked softly.
Ruan Xiaoshuang smiled and nodded. "Yes, please bring us some; it’s just right for a light snack."
The girl placed her bamboo basket on the table and took out several snacks, arranging them on a bamboo plate: golden Thousand Layer Cake, red glutinous rice rolls wrapped in bamboo leaves, and a few translucent mugwort jelly cakes.
Lin Mingchang reached for his wallet to pay, but the girl hesitated and didn’t extend her hand. Instead, she looked around cautiously and whispered, "I heard you talking about the Golden Money Bee just now?"
The four exchanged surprised glances. Lin Mingchang responded, "Why do you ask?"
She glanced around again, leaned closer to the table, and lowered her voice. "My name is Miao Qing, from Nanshan Miao Village. We have a Golden Money Bee breeding pilot project in our village."
"Really? Is it managed by Long Tianming?" Ruan Xiaoshuang asked in surprise.
Miao Qing nodded. "Yes, I happen to be going back home tomorrow. If you’re interested, I can take you to see our village; the Golden Money Bee breeding pilot project is located on the hillside behind our village."
The four naturally seized this opportunity for investigation, immediately expressing their gratitude and accepting her invitation.
"Then it's settled! I'll wait for you at the inn entrance at eight tomorrow morning," Miao Qing said with a slight smile as she tidied up her bamboo basket and turned to leave.
After Miao Qing walked away, Lin Mingchang picked up a Thousand Layer Cake and took a bite. The crispy outer layer revealed a soft and sweet filling inside, prompting him to praise it. "This tastes great; you all should try some."
He held out the bamboo plate towards Shen Tong but noticed she was still staring blankly at the door.
"Shen Tong? What’s wrong? What are you looking at?" Lin Mingchang waved his hand in front of Shen Tong's eyes.
Only then did Shen Tong withdraw her gaze, frowning as she said, "When that girl named Miao Qing turned around just now, I saw a tattoo on her inner wrist—something like a snake but not quite a snake, something like an insect but not quite an insect; it was a pattern of fine lines intertwined."
