“This is the final work of Wax Master Lan Yifei. After the death of his wife and the disappearance of his beloved daughter, he lost the pillars of his life and poured all his heart into creating this Wax Figure for her. The school exhibition hall only has records related to this piece, but no physical object exists. Everyone knows about this Wax Figure only through legends. You and I are so fortunate to witness this great artistic miracle with our own eyes!” Gao Jun spoke eloquently, his gaze lingering on the girl.
I suddenly recalled something and said, “This Lan Yifei was the previous resident of our house? You actually discovered this Wax Figure on the night you arrived, which is why you went out to search for related information the next day.”
“Exactly,” Gao Jun nodded. “For the past few nights, I’ve been sneaking into this secret room from the balcony every evening, moving the Wax Figure to the window to admire this great artistic masterpiece under the cover of night. Do you remember that strange knocking sound you heard that night? It was my first time opening this door, intending to visit the owner of the Wax Figure, but I found that the door was sealed. Out of curiosity, I knocked on the wooden board blocking the entrance, and that’s when I startled you. Later, when you mentioned hearing knocking sounds at home, I realized that this secret room was actually sealed within our own house.”
“No wonder you’ve looked so exhausted every morning, with bloodshot eyes.”
“I’ve been guarding this Wax Figure all night long, reluctant to leave until dawn broke. I was completely captivated by her. I brought my painting supplies, hoping to capture her likeness, but I couldn’t reach that level. When this girl came onto my canvas, she lost her vibrant life; her eyes became dull and lifeless.” At this point, Gao Jun shook his head in frustration, and his flashlight drooped.
“Wait a minute, what’s that?” I suddenly exclaimed, having made a strange discovery.
“What is it?” Gao Jun looked up at me.
I nudged his arm. “Hand me the flashlight.”
Gao Jun hesitated reluctantly but complied.
I directed the flashlight toward the wall behind the Wax Figure, revealing it covered in densely packed letters about the size of copper coins.
A chill ran down my spine as I read all the words: “Let me out! Daddy, let me out!”
The scenes from my dream resurfaced vividly in my mind: the girl writing on the wardrobe, my attempt to pry her hand away as her broken skin fell like snowflakes…
I trembled as I moved the flashlight, the beam returning to the Wax Figure, then slowly shifting towards the girl's right hand.
At that spot, the wax layer had already peeled away, revealing a withered, yellowed little hand.
The horrifying truth was finally cruelly exposed before my eyes: the Wax Figure concealed the girl's corpse!
I fell into a terrifying illusion, as if I could see the girl waving at me, her piercing cries echoing in my ears: "Let me out! Daddy, let me out!"
I shook my head in agony, waving my hands to drive away the nonexistent phantoms around me: "Stop calling! I beg you, leave me alone, just stop!" In my daze, my arm brushed against the Wax Figure.
"What are you doing? No!" Gao Jun exclaimed in shock, rushing over to try to steady the Wax Figure, but it was too late. The Wax Figure swayed twice and fell to the hard floor.
The wax layer peeled away from the girl's body like melting thin ice. The moment her face was revealed, her eyes closed.
The illusions that had entangled me vanished, and I sank softly to the ground, feeling utterly drained.
"No!" Gao Jun cried out in anguish, throwing himself onto the girl's withered corpse. "Don't go... don't leave!" He gently lifted the girl's eyelids with trembling fingers.
What he saw were two hollow, lifeless eyes; the piercing sorrow and fear had vanished forever.
