I was stunned, staring at Gao Jun in disbelief. How could this be possible? How could he know about my dreams?
Suddenly, a strange expression crossed Gao Jun's face. He raised his voice in a high-pitched tone, calling out, "I want to go out! Daddy, let me out! I want to go out! Daddy, let me out!"
I was terrified by Gao Jun's bizarre behavior. His cries pierced my eardrums like a sharp knife, pulling me back into that nightmare. My face turned pale as I weakly covered my ears, shaking my head desperately. "What... what’s wrong with you? Please stop shouting!"
Gao Jun ceased his cries, and his expression returned to normal. "Don't be afraid. I was just trying to show you. In your dream, didn't that little girl call out like this?"
"How could you know... it’s impossible... how could you know?" The overwhelming fear had left my mind blank, and I spoke incoherently, tears streaming down my cheeks.
Gao Jun looked at me sadly, and the atmosphere in the room felt as if it had frozen. After a long silence, he broke it, saying, "Don't ask any more questions. I just want you to understand that there are indeed some things you cannot comprehend."
"What... what should I do now?" I had completely lost my composure and looked at Gao Jun as if pleading for help.
Gao Jun lowered his head in thought for a moment before replying, "You should leave here quickly. I've thought it over; this is the only way you can escape the nightmare."
Yes, I needed to leave! At this point, regardless of Gao Jun's intentions behind his words, I couldn't stay any longer. With that decision made, my thoughts began to clear slightly.
"Let’s leave together. Let’s get out of this house and away from that girl. No matter what terrible things have happened, let’s distance ourselves from it." I looked at Gao Jun with tear-filled eyes, hoping to persuade him.
Gao Jun avoided my gaze and remained silent.
I realized something and cried out in pursuit of answers: "You don’t want to leave? You want to stay here? Why? Have you even considered me?"
"I can’t leave this place. I can only tell you: it’s for the sake of art. Everything that happens here is because of art. Now, it may seem filled with fear to you, but to me, it is brimming with the spirit of art. Only here can I pursue my own quest for art," Gao Jun replied calmly, clearly resolute in his decision.
I pointed at the painting, where a girl in a white dress was stained with blood, making her appear even more terrifying. "Is this what you pursue? Is this what you call art?"
"Art has many forms of expression; you don’t understand these," Gao Jun said, his voice low but firm and unwavering.
Art? Yes, I truly did not understand, just as I could not comprehend the performance art Zhao Feng demonstrated yesterday. I could not grasp what beauty lay within this gruesome image stained with blood. But I also knew that Gao Jun had made up his mind and would not change it. Tears blurred my vision as the blood on the painting seemed to seep into my eyes, a deep crimson spreading out. In a daze, it slowly transformed into the blood trickling down Zhao Feng's hand, sending chills down my spine.
The pale face of the little girl reappeared before me, her cold gaze fixed on me as if she were calling for help or accusing me of something.
My heart tightened under the weight of her stare. I felt strongly that the girl was calling out to me; she needed me! This feeling gradually overcame the fear within me. Finally, I lifted my head and said, "I want to see her."
My words clearly caught Gao Jun off guard; he seemed not to have heard me clearly and looked at me in confusion. "What? Who do you want to see?"
"The girl—the one next door! I know she needs me. No matter how you treat her, I have to see her now!" I declared firmly.
Gao Jun paused for a moment, then gently shook his head and sighed. "You are mistaken. You can no longer distinguish between illusion and reality; that is why nightmares haunt you."
