Cao Cao personally led his army to the outskirts of Puyang City. From a distance, he could see the city walls adorned with flags, and indeed, at one corner of the west gate, a white flag was raised with a large character for "Righteousness" written on it. Seeing this, Cao Cao felt a surge of joy in his heart and smiled at Xiahou Dun beside him, saying, "It truly matches what the secret letter said; the plan of the Tian can be executed."
At noon, the city gates suddenly opened with a loud crash, and two armies surged out from within. Leading them was a general on horseback wielding a spear—Hou Cheng—followed closely by Gao Shun and his troops providing cover. Hou Cheng shouted loudly, "Cao thief, do not be arrogant! Take this spear!" Before he could finish his words, Dian Wei had already charged out from the Cao Army, wielding Twin Iron Halberds and sneering, "You little rodent dare to fight me?"
The two horses collided as iron spear met broadsword in a flurry of strikes. Hou Cheng struggled against Dian Wei's relentless assault and gradually found himself at a disadvantage, forced to retreat back towards the city. Dian Wei's eyes glinted with murderous intent as he roared, "You won't escape!" He spurred his horse and chased after him to the drawbridge. Seeing this, Gao Shun rushed forward to intercept but was scattered by Dian Wei's sheer force. He had no choice but to protect Hou Cheng as they retreated into the city, the gates slamming shut with a resounding thud.
Just as the Cao Army was reorganizing their formation, a soldier dressed in plain clothes rushed through the chaos and knelt on one knee, presenting a sealed letter with both hands. "This subordinate comes on behalf of the Tian to see my Lord." Cao Cao took the letter and opened it to find written inside: "Tonight at midnight, there will be a gong sound from the city; I will open the gates for you. Please advance swiftly." After reading it, Cao Cao laughed heartily and said to his generals, "Heaven has granted us a great opportunity; Lü Bu will surely be defeated here!" He then ordered his troops to split into three routes: Xiahou Dun would lead the left flank, Cao Hong would guard the right flank, while he himself would lead Xiahou Yuan, Li Dian, Le Jin, and Dian Wei into the city.
Before departing, Li Dian stepped forward and clasped his fists in suggestion: "My Lord, there are many dangers within the city. Please allow us to scout ahead. If there are ambushes, we can report back immediately."
Cao Cao glanced sideways at Li Dian and coldly replied, "If I, Cao Cao, do not dare to lead from the front, who will fight for me? Everyone follow me into the city; if there is danger, we shall advance or retreat together!" With that said, he mounted his horse and pointed his sword forward. "Follow me!" The roar of the Cao Army erupted as they charged towards Puyang City.
The night was thickening; the moon had yet to rise, enveloping Puyang City in silence. Cao Cao led his main force stealthily towards the west gate when suddenly a long sound of a shell echoed through the air followed by thunderous shouts. Flames erupted along the city walls illuminating the night sky as the drawbridge crashed down and the gates swung wide open.
"Charge!" Cao Cao raised his arm high and galloped ahead leading his troops straight into the city. The surroundings were eerily quiet; apart from flickering flames, the streets were deserted—there wasn't even a shadow of a guard in sight. They rushed straight towards Zhou Ya but found it still silent and empty.
"Something's wrong... this is a trap!" Cao Cao abruptly reined in his horse with a darkened expression and turned around shouting loudly, "Retreat! Fall back quickly!"
At that moment, an earth-shattering cannon blast erupted from within Zhou Ya. Immediately after, flames surged up from all sides of the city gates engulfing everything in darkness and lighting up half of the sky with their glow. The sound of drums thundered as cries of battle surged from all directions as if heaven and earth were trembling.
A troop emerged from the eastern alley led by a general wielding a Fangtian Halberd—it was Zhang Liao. Following closely behind from another alley was Zang Ba brandishing a broadsword leading his forces to encircle them. Caught in between attacks from both sides, Cao Cao hurriedly fought his way out towards the north gate.
"Block them!" With an angry shout, another ambush appeared at the north gate as Hao Meng and Cao Xing led their troops to intercept him. As chaos erupted around him ready for battle, Cao Cao gritted his teeth and charged forward on horseback; soldiers fell around him one after another forcing him to change direction once more.
"To the South Gate!" he commanded loudly, leading the remnants of his army in a frantic rush toward the South Gate. However, upon arriving, they found that Gao Shun and Hou Cheng's forces had already blocked the exit, weapons drawn and ready, a menacing aura surrounding them.
Cao Cao's face turned ashen as he gripped the hilt of his sword tightly. With the enemy closing in from behind, a furious roar suddenly echoed from the rear: "Do not fear, my Lord! I will hold them off!" It was Dian Wei. His eyes wide with rage, he brandished his iron halberd and charged into the enemy ranks like a divine warrior. Gao Shun and Hou Cheng's troops were instantly thrown into disarray.
"Break through!" Cao Cao shouted, seizing the opportunity provided by Dian Wei's distraction to lead his men out of the city gates. Gao Shun and Hou Cheng, momentarily suppressed by Dian Wei, had no choice but to retreat, watching helplessly as Cao's army broke free.
Amidst the flames, the shouts within Puyang City roared like thunder as Cao Cao rode away, his heart heavy as iron.
Dian Wei reached the drawbridge and saw chaos erupting both inside and outside the city gates, thick smoke billowing and flames leaping. He looked back but could not see Cao Cao's figure. His heart sank; he abruptly reined in his horse and turned back to re-enter the city.
As he burst through the city gates, Dian Wei collided with Li Dian, who appeared anxious and quickly asked, "Dian Wei! Where is my Lord?"
Dian Wei, filled with urgency and frustration, replied with a booming voice, "I cannot find him either! You must go outside to summon reinforcements while I search for my Lord!" With that, he swung his halberd and plunged back into the inferno of the city. Li Dian gritted his teeth in agreement and spurred his horse toward the city exit.
The smoke inside grew thicker, flames painting half the sky red as cries of battle mingled with explosions. Dian Wei's gaze was sharp as he wielded his Twin Iron Halberds; wherever he went, enemy soldiers fell before him. Sweating profusely, he scanned desperately for Cao Cao amidst the twisting alleys filled with chaos and fire, but there was no trace to be found.
When he reached the edge of the city moat, Dian Wei encountered Le Jin. The latter rode up covered in dust and urgently asked, "Dian Wei! Where is my Lord?"
Panting heavily, Dian Wei shouted back, "I've made two passes through already and haven't found him! My Lord may be trapped in the flames!" With renewed determination in his eyes, he pointed his halberd forward. "Let us return to save him!"
Le Jin raised his arm high and shouted, "Charge in!" The two men galloped toward the city gates. However, enemy troops on the walls had set an ambush; at a command, boulders and fire projectiles rained down like a storm. Le Jin's horse reared in fright at the flames, nearly throwing him off its back as he had to pull back momentarily.
But Dian Wei paid no heed to this; his gaze remained fixed on the raging inferno within the city. He squeezed his legs against his steed and charged through flames and smoke. His body was charred from the heat; even his armor felt scalding hot as sweat mixed with dirt streamed down his face. Despite this, he continued to swing his halberd fiercely, shouting at the top of his lungs: "My Lord! Where is my Lord?" His voice pierced through the clamor and fire, echoing throughout the city.
Dian Wei carved a bloody path through the chaos, unperturbed as sparks flew onto his face and his armor was nearly scorched. His gaze was resolute, brows furrowed, sweeping through the enemy ranks like a fierce tiger. Tirelessly, he searched and shouted, even as flames consumed the entire city. Dian Wei's figure charged forward amidst the inferno, never retreating an inch.
The fire lit up the sky, and the sounds of battle echoed within the city. Cao Cao, clad in charred armor, galloped around desperately trying to break out of Puyang City. However, all four gates were heavily besieged by Lü Bu's forces, leaving him with no escape. Anxious and frantic, he rode towards the South Gate, only to find it engulfed in flames, a wall of fire blocking his path while enemy soldiers surged like a tide.
With no other option, Cao Cao turned back and spurred his horse towards the North Gate. Just as he rounded a corner, a massive shadow loomed in the fiery glow—Lü Bu, wielding the Fangtian Halberd, charged forward with an imposing presence. His gaze was sharp as an eagle's, locking onto Cao Cao as he thundered, "Cao Cao, where are you!"
Cao Cao's heart sank; he quickly lowered his head and covered his face with his hand, afraid to reveal his identity. He struck his horse hard and sped past Lü Bu's side. As Lü Bu closed in, seizing the opportunity, he raised his halberd and swung it towards Cao Cao. The tip grazed Cao Cao's helmet with a resounding clang that sent sparks flying and knocked his helmet askew.
Lü Bu shouted fiercely, "Speak! Where is Cao Cao?"
In a moment of quick thinking, Cao Cao pointed to a soldier riding a Yellow Horse ahead and gasped, "That one on the Yellow Horse is Cao Cao!"
Lü Bu snorted coldly, believing him without question. He squeezed his legs against his warhorse and galloped towards that soldier. Seizing the chance while Lü Bu turned away, Cao Cao swiftly redirected his horse and raced towards the East Gate, sweat mixed with ash trickling down his forehead as his heart pounded like a drum.
Upon reaching the East Gate, suddenly a figure burst forth from the flames like a deity descending from heaven, wielding Twin Iron Halberds and roaring into battle—it was Dian Wei! His face was illuminated by firelight, blackened with soot and fury. Spotting Cao Cao’s silhouette, he immediately swung his dual halberds to clear a path through the enemy soldiers, booming with authority, "My Lord! Follow me!"
Dian Wei led the charge at full speed, halberds whirling as he forged a bloody trail. Cao Cao followed closely behind, feeling somewhat reassured as he tightly gripped his horse’s belly and rushed towards the city gate. However, just as they reached the gate's edge, a deafening crash sounded—the burning Fire Beam from above plummeted down directly onto the hind legs of Cao Cao’s warhorse.
The horse let out a mournful cry; its hind legs buckled beneath it as it collapsed under him with a thunderous crash. Flames rapidly closed in around them, waves of scorching heat washing over him. Ignoring the pain, Cao Cao gritted his teeth and strained to lift the Fire Beam pinning him down. The intense heat scorched the armor on his arms; his beard and hair tips were singed as the acrid smell of burning flesh filled the air.
