The banquet was only halfway through when the Empress Dowager suddenly complained of a headache.
The Young Emperor, feeling concerned for his mother, instructed Imperial Physician Song to accompany her back to the palace for a check-up.
As soon as the Empress Dowager returned to the palace, she released her hand from her forehead, and her spirits instantly lifted.
“Song Yang, do you feel dry in the mouth and restless?” The Empress Dowager fanned herself, laughing lightly as if trying to dispel the heat surrounding Song Yang.
With a calm smile, Song Yang replied, “Did you put something in the drinks at the banquet, Your Majesty? But since I personally researched that substance, how could I not recognize it?”
“You said that it was colorless and tasteless. How could you still identify it? Isn’t that deceiving the emperor?”
The Empress Dowager showed no sign of embarrassment at being exposed. She lazily walked past him and leaned against the Noble Consort's Couch, casting a sidelong glance at Song Yang.
“Your Majesty doesn’t know that there’s a way to discern things by observing words and expressions? You’ve been watching me closely since the banquet began, occasionally glancing at your maid to see if she brought me any wine and whether I’ve been drinking. Even if I were dull-witted, I could still guess.” Song Yang smiled slightly, his tone calm.
The Empress Dowager stared at him for a few seconds before suddenly laughing silently: “Why don’t you take a moment to truly feel it?”
At her words, Song Yang felt a surge of heat rising from somewhere within him. His heart raced as a thought flashed through his mind: I’ve been drugged again!
“You should know that there’s a saying in this world: ‘Return what one has done unto you.’ No, it’s being too clever for your own good. This little trick of mine—using diversion—is quite effective, isn’t it? I specifically added extra spices to every dish on your table and placed flowers outside that counteract each other’s properties. How about that? My influence has worked well, hasn’t it?”
The Empress Dowager laughed even more triumphantly.
"Well, you've learned quite well. You all know about the mutual generation and restraint, and you're familiar with medical principles," Song Yang spat out through clenched teeth.
Seeing the rare display of anger on Song Yang's face, the Empress laughed even more exuberantly.
She rose from her couch and walked over to Song Yang, standing on tiptoe. With one hand, she lifted his chin and playfully said, "Lord Song, would you like me to call in a few beautiful maidens to help relieve your frustration?"
Song Yang avoided the Empress's teasing fingers, his face darkening as he replied, "No need."
The Empress feigned concern and asked, "Really no need?"
"No need," Song Yang firmly rejected.
As her hand slid back down to his clothing, she studied him intently from head to toe and remarked, "Did you not say that this medicine... could bring a person down in one step? Why is it that you remain so calm and composed now? Aside from your flushed complexion, you seem no different from anyone else."
Veins bulged on Song Yang's forehead as he struggled to endure.
His originally jade-like face now bore a rosy hue, and the exposed skin had taken on a faint red tint that stirred desire in those who beheld him. "That's because my endurance is strong," he stated.
The Empress, sensing it was time to retreat, withdrew her teasing hand and giggled, "But the Regent is also a remarkable man; his endurance must be extraordinary as well. If this aphrodisiac cannot even pass your test, how could I dare use it on the Regent? If it fails, there won't be a second chance, and I'd lose face entirely. I must win in one go!"
"So you keep testing it on me over and over?"
Song Yang displayed an expression of deep helplessness and innocently said, "But Your Majesty, I have told you many times that I am impotent. Therefore, aphrodisiacs have little effect on me... they only cause me discomfort for a while."
"Well, that's good to hear. If I can cure your impotence, then I will be very close to success," the Empress replied.
With narrowed eyes, she settled back onto the couch, watching Song Yang endure the torment of desire that he could not relieve.
