Above the forest, a layer of mist enveloped the area like a lid, and he found himself caught between this lid and the sea of fog. Fortunately, the mist within the forest was merely ordinary fog; although it obscured his vision, it did not hinder his perception, which still extended up to twenty miles. This allowed him to relax slightly.
Looking out into the space between the cloud layer above and the fog sea below, he saw a towering peak piercing the sky. He could only see part of the mountain; both the clouds above and the fog below grew denser as he approached it, as if they were emanating from this very mountain. Scanning his mental map, he found no indication of anything unusual nearby. If he wasn't mistaken, the distant peak was labeled as Bei Yin Mountain on the map, considered a landmark in the area, yet there was no additional information about it. It seemed to be just an ordinary mountain. However, gazing at the distant Mo Wen Mountain, he felt certain that it was anything but ordinary; there must be something special about it that he simply did not know. Since it was special, he decided to investigate. After his experience in Cloud Mist Swamp, his strength had increased significantly, and his courage had grown as well. Now being within the Lianyun Empire, he assumed there wouldn't be too much risk.
Descending from the mountain, he continued toward Bei Yin Mountain. Although emboldened, he remained vigilant, frequently stopping to survey his surroundings. As expected, the closer he got to Bei Yin Mountain, the thicker the fog became, severely affecting his visibility. His range of sight diminished from two hundred zhang to just fifty zhang now. Fortunately, his perception distance remained largely unchanged; however, he did not fully extend it—keeping it within three hundred zhang—since he was in a forest where trees could obstruct his senses. If danger arose, three hundred zhang would be sufficient for him to react.
Yet, as he progressed, an increasing sense of unease settled over him. The surroundings were eerily silent; there were no Demon Beasts or ordinary beasts, not even the chirping of insects or birds. This reminded him of the Bai Xu incident back in Kao Shu Village with Erniu. Could there be flowering Bai Xu here? However, after a thorough inspection, he found no signs of infection on himself; the mist was merely ordinary fog. Still, he became more cautious in case of any sudden developments.
The temperature around him gradually dropped; his heightened awareness sensed this change. The strangeness of his surroundings did not deter him from pressing forward; instead, he felt a growing anticipation that such a unique place might yield unexpected rewards.
As he searched while advancing through Mist Sea Forest for five days now, he recalled the saying: "The mountain looks close from afar." What seemed near when viewed from Tree turned out to be quite distant upon approach. After climbing Tree to assess the situation based on his observations, he estimated that he still had five days' journey left to reach Bei Yin Mountain.
The absence of life around him was unsettlingly eerie. Yet despite this desolation, he had made some gains along the way—though they could not compare to Cloud Mist Forest's offerings—he had collected some rare medicinal herbs that were still valuable enough to calm his restless mind somewhat.
Restless? Indeed, that was how he felt. As he drew closer to Bei Yin Mountain, this feeling intensified with each passing moment.
