"Right there," Mo Wen pointed ahead to the River Valley, flanked by mountains that prevented direct sunlight from reaching it. The river split into two branches here, forming a small island in the middle. The island was not large, measuring about fifty to seventy-five yards across. The moonlight was blocked by one of the peaks, casting the island into shadow, as if it were hiding in a dark corner. At night, the moonlight could not touch the island, and during the day, sunlight also failed to reach it. It was truly an ideal habitat for a Chimera.
The island was covered in trees, and from within the forest came bursts of white light, as if a gigantic Lighting Pearl were hidden among them.
"I'll go eliminate it right now," Erniu said, gripping his knife and preparing to rush onto the island.
"Not yet; we need to wait a little longer," Mo Wen stopped him.
"What are we waiting for? The sooner we eliminate it, the better."
"I understand your eagerness, but we can afford to wait a moment. Besides, you don't even know what this Bai Xu is; are you really going to charge in?"
"Then why don't you tell me what this Bai Xu is?" Erniu sheathed his knife and paused. He realized he had acted impulsively; rushing in without understanding the situation was a major mistake in battle.
"This Bai Xu is a You Ji Bai Chi. Don't worry; let's eat something first while I explain. You need to regain some strength..." The two gathered firewood and started roasting meat behind the previous stones.
As they cooked, Mo Wen shared knowledge about Bai Xu with Erniu. Bai Xu was already classified as an entry-level Chimera, specifically a You Ji Bai Chi. Its essence belonged to the plant-based Chimeras, which is one way people categorize Chimeras. However, it could change according to its surroundings: if it was in a grassland, it would appear as grass; if in a forest, it would take on the form of a tree. This made it very difficult for people to identify.
Logically speaking, a tree-like Bai Xu shouldn't pose such a high danger level. Yet its threat radius was alarmingly vast; some Bai Xu could turn an area of over a thousand Bird Journeys into a wasteland.
"While I haven't heard of Bai Xu before, if what you say is true about its dangers, then its classification should be higher," Erniu said, astonished after hearing Mo Wen's explanation. They were about to face such a terrifying Chimera. However, seeing Er Gou Brother's calm demeanor made him feel somewhat reassured.
"This is what I wanted to tell you next..." Mo Wen divided the roasted meat and handed some to Erniu before continuing to eat and speak. The reason Bai Xu posed such danger yet was classified as You Ji Bai Chi was that it only became harmful during its flowering period. Although there were no specific records of when Bai Xu bloomed, it was inferred that it only flowered once every thousand years or so. Its danger stemmed from these flowers, which resembled clumps of white cotton. Once these flowers bloomed, they would disperse into translucent strands that floated on the wind or dissolved in water. When animals came into contact with these strands, they would burrow into their minds and siphon their Shen Hun.
Animals from which Shen Hun had been siphoned would not die immediately but would gradually perish. The duration of this process depended on the strength of the victim's Shen Hun; weaker beings like Beasts would die quickly from having their Shen Hun drained, while stronger Demon Beasts could endure for much longer. This explained why Tamed Beasts were the first to be affected in Kao Shu Village, followed by children—the soul power absorbed by the flower strands would return to nourish Bai Xu's essence and facilitate its growth.
