"Brother Erniu, where does this water come from?"
"The well in the middle of the village." Erniu was momentarily stunned by being called "Brother Er Gou," holding the ladle in his hand, frozen in place.
"And where does the well water come from?"
"It’s drawn from the mountains. Have you seen the river at the front of the village? The drinking water for our village comes from the same source as that river... Ah! How did I not think of that?" Erniu carefully inspected the water in the ladle, then placed it beside the water tank and slapped his forehead.
"Did Brother Erniu think of something?"
"This water... The entrance for drawing water into the village doesn’t have a Magic Circle blocking it..." Erniu tapped his head, recalling that the Water Channel built to bring water into the village was established at its inception and buried deep underground. The walls of the Water Channel were made of stone slabs, while the current Magic Circle was completed only after several renovations; it did not cover the Water Channel.
"Brother Erniu, is tonight a full moon night?" Mo Wen looked up at the sky, calculating the time. Seeing Mo Wen's expression, Erniu felt even more confused; this Brother Er Gou seemed completely out of sync.
"Yes, tonight is indeed a full moon night, but what does that have to do with..."
"Then let’s go find Bai Xu. You know the way; let’s first check out the source." After saying this, Mo Wen stood up and left the courtyard. Erniu scratched his head in confusion and followed him out.
"Er Gou Brother, it’s almost dark. Do you think we’ll find Bai Xu?"
"If we don’t look, how will we know if there’s anything to find? Hopefully, we can locate it; otherwise, it’ll be hard to find after tonight. If we do find it, it could be a great opportunity for you all; as for its significance, we’ll only know once we get there." The two continued along the village's Water Channel. The water collection point was half a day’s journey from the village; normally, no one would come here except for routine checks once a month. Since it had been less than a month since the last check and the village's water source had always been safe, no one suspected that there was an issue with it now.
As they checked along the way, they reached the water collection point in just over an hour—a journey that usually took half a day. They paused to inspect their surroundings but found nothing unusual. Erniu felt somewhat disheartened; if they didn’t discover what Brother Er Gou mentioned about Bai Xu at the source, finding it later would likely be difficult. Mo Wen crouched by the river to examine the water before standing up and continuing upstream. Seeing Mo Wen move on, Erniu hurried to catch up; it seemed Brother Er Gou had made some kind of discovery.
As they approached Zi Shi, Mo Wen stopped on a large rock ahead. By this time, Erniu was nearly at his limit, panting heavily as he climbed onto the rock and sat down to catch his breath. Mo Wen appeared unfazed; his experiences fleeing through forests had built up incredible endurance. He didn’t notice any changes in his Dan Tian and naturally attributed his ability to keep going longer to his stamina. Had he not been mindful of Erniu’s pace, he could have moved even faster.
The bright moon hung high in the night sky, illuminating the ground as if it were daytime. This should have been prime time for large beasts to emerge, yet everything around them was eerily silent—there wasn’t even a sound from insects; only Erniu’s heavy breathing broke the stillness as he sat on the rock. Mo Wen didn’t look at him but gazed ahead at the River Valley.
"Let’s take a break."
"I’m fine; I can still manage. Let’s keep going," Erniu said while bending over and waving his hand dismissively.
"No need; we’ve arrived."
"There!" As soon as Erniu heard Mo Wen's words, he jumped up immediately, gripping his weapon tightly and scanning their surroundings intently.
