After listening to Erniu's account, Mo Wen fell silent. Since Erniu had come to him, it was clear he needed help. As a healer, it was his duty to assist those in need; this was a universal truth. Moreover, after spending time with the villagers, he found them to be quite decent, contrary to Old Lu's claims of flattery and deceit. Therefore, it was only right for him to lend a hand. As for the outcome, that remained uncertain; he would do his best and have no regrets.
Reflecting on Erniu's situation, Mo Wen reasoned that if a Chimera had attacked the village, even if the villagers were not powerful enough to defend themselves, they shouldn't have lost the effectiveness of the Magic Circle entirely. Soon, he considered several possibilities and began to discuss them with Erniu.
"Brother Erniu, have there been any outsiders staying in the village recently?" Mo Wen had thought about the Chimera attack but felt uncertain after Erniu's explanation. There was also the possibility that outsiders were involved.
"No, there haven't been any expedition teams staying in the village for the past three months. Even those who come here for rest usually stay outside the village. You must have seen those courtyards at the village entrance; they are meant for outsiders," Erniu explained. Hearing this, Mo Wen finally understood that the place where he was staying was not accessible to ordinary people.
"In that case, Brother Erniu, could you take me to see the children? I have been training under my master and have some knowledge of medicine," Mo Wen requested.
"You are being modest; we have all seen your medical skills. That is precisely why I came here. Please follow me; the children are currently housed in the ancestral hall at the village head," Erniu replied.
The two made their way along the stone path to the ancestral hall. Inside the main hall sat several elderly men, all looking sorrowful and sighing heavily.
"Junior greets you, esteemed elders," Mo Wen said as he stood at the entrance of the hall and bowed respectfully.
"There is no need for such formalities, young friend. Please come in," one of the elders said as he rose to welcome him. The boy appeared to be only twelve or thirteen years old; if it weren't for Erniu's assurance that this boy had saved him from a Demon Beast and that members of the Hunting Party corroborated this, he would not believe such a young child could possess such abilities. However, now was not the time for doubts about the boy's capabilities; the village's issues were pressing.
"You flatter Junior too much, but may I first see how the children are faring?" Mo Wen asked. Having spent time with Li Erniu and his companions, he had gained a deep appreciation for their sincerity and could not afford to linger on formalities with these elders.
"Erniu, take our young friend," one elder instructed Li Erniu standing nearby. Following this, Li Erniu led Mo Wen to two side rooms.
"This child looks rather young; can he really handle it?" one elder questioned.
"Sigh! If what Erniu said is true, he should be capable enough. But we have no better options at this point; let him give it a try—the children's condition cannot be delayed," another elder replied.
"There's no other choice," a group of elders murmured among themselves in concern.
...
"As you suspected, it is indeed caused by a Chimera," Mo Wen said after examining several unconscious children.
"Brother, can you tell which Chimera is responsible?" one elder asked eagerly.
"If I am not mistaken, it should be Bai Xu," Mo Wen replied.
"Bai Xu? I haven't heard of that one. Is there any way to help these children...?"
"Let's discuss this in the main hall so we don't keep the elders waiting anxiously."
