The atmosphere in the square had reached a climax, with the host on stage leading everyone in a countdown. In just ten minutes, the new year would arrive.
"Let's go over there," Ao Bing suggested, pointing to a relatively quiet corner. "The view of the fireworks is better from that angle."
Nezha nodded and followed Ao Bing through the crowded throng. Just then, a girl wearing bunny ear headbands suddenly blocked their path—it was Lin Yuqing, the girl from the Music Department who had once expressed her feelings for Ao Bing.
"Ao Bing! Senior!" Lin Yuqing exclaimed with surprise. "You’re finally back! I thought you would never return!"
Ao Bing politely nodded. "Lin, it’s been a while."
"Where have you been? Why did you disappear for so long?" Lin Yuqing fired off a series of questions, her eyes filled with concern.
Nezha felt a surge of frustration at the side, ready to interrupt, but Ao Bing spoke first. "I had some family matters to attend to. I’m only back temporarily for the New Year's Eve Party."
"I see..." A hint of disappointment flashed across Lin Yuqing's face, but she quickly perked up again. "The performance from the music academy is about to start! We’ve prepared your favorite Beethoven piano sonata; you must come listen!"
As she spoke, she enthusiastically took Ao Bing's hand, trying to pull him away.
Nezha's heart sank. Ao Bing only had one night; if he was taken away by Lin Yuqing, their precious time together would be wasted. Yet he didn't want to appear too domineering in front of Ao Bing and could only stand there anxiously, feeling helpless.
To his surprise, Ao Bing gently pulled his hand away from Lin Yuqing's grasp, his tone warm yet firm. "Sorry, Lin. I have something more important tonight; I’m afraid I can’t attend your performance."
Lin Yuqing clearly didn’t expect Ao Bing to refuse. She froze for a moment before lowering her head in disappointment. "Oh... that’s really too bad."
Ao Bing smiled apologetically. "I’ll definitely come to listen another day if I get the chance. Please allow me to miss tonight."
Lin Yuqing reluctantly nodded and left, clearly unwilling to accept it. Nezha let out a sigh of relief but felt puzzled—why would Ao Bing refuse such an invitation when he used to be so passionate about music?
Seemingly reading Nezha's thoughts, Ao Bing explained, "Spending this rare time with you is more important to me than a piano performance."
Those words ignited a fire in Nezha's heart. Gathering his courage, he grasped Ao Bing's hand tightly. "Ao Bing, I have something to tell you."
Ao Bing looked surprised but didn’t pull his hand away. "What is it?"
Nezha took a deep breath, ready to speak when suddenly the countdown echoed throughout the square:
"Ten! Nine! Eight!..."
The crowd erupted in excitement as everyone joined in the countdown. Nezha and Ao Bing exchanged smiles and instinctively joined in:
"Seven! Six! Five!..."
As the countdown continued, Nezha's heart raced faster; he knew that the perfect moment to say those words was approaching.
"Four! Three! Two! One! Happy New Year!"
As the cheers erupted, the first firework blossomed in the night sky, its golden light illuminating the entire expanse above. Following it were bursts of red, blue, and purple fireworks, each one lighting up the faces of those gathered below.
The crowd erupted into waves of awe and applause, with many couples seizing the moment to share a kiss. The festive atmosphere reached its peak, and the air was filled with a sense of happiness and hope.
