After surveying his surroundings, Mo Wen's gaze fell upon the center of the lake. There, in the middle, was a platform measuring a hundred feet square, upon which lay a skeleton. The skeleton stood over two meters tall and stretched more than four meters in length, its head resembling that of a dragon, with a horn protruding from its forehead and hooves like those of a horse. Suddenly, an overwhelming pressure emanated from the skeleton, nearly causing Mo Wen to kneel on the ground. The force came and went so quickly that he barely had time to react.
"Could this be the legendary Divine Beast, Qilin?" At that moment, he forgot about the earlier pressure; his jaw dropped again in astonishment. However, he quickly regained his composure when he noticed Xiao Hei had appeared on the platform, prostrating before the skeleton as if performing some sort of ritual. Then, it rose and extended its claws to touch the skeleton. Was that pressure caused by Xiao Hei? Without time to ponder further, he shouted to stop Xiao Hei.
"Xiao Hei, don't!"
"This is its opportunity," an elderly voice echoed in his ear.
"Who?!" Mo Wen jumped at the sudden sound.
"I am right before you; what you see is me."
"You are the Qilin?" Hearing this calmed Mo Wen down, as there was nothing in front of him besides Xiao Hei and the skeleton.
"Young human, very good; you have calmed down so quickly. How do your kind refer to me?"
"Junior was just being rude; please forgive me, esteemed elder." Mo Wen was not surprised; he had learned from Old Lu that beings at the Divine Beast level could speak human language. He bowed respectfully toward the skeleton.
"Haha! You have some manners. Cultivating the Yin Yang Principle... ah, this path is not easy..."
"Please enlighten me, esteemed elder." The fact that the Qilin could see through his cultivated Law made Mo Wen break out in a cold sweat.
"You need not panic. Given your current low strength, it is not surprising that I can see through your Law. What you humans cultivate is different from me, and I cannot tell you much. However, as far as I know, no human has ever truly mastered the Yin Yang Path." Hearing this from the elder made Mo Wen's heart sink.
"However, you humans cultivate against the heavens; in the end, few survive. Perhaps you will succeed." Sensing Mo Wen's change in mood, the elder added reassuringly.
"Thank you for your guidance, esteemed elder; Junior has learned much."
"Well then, my time is limited. I do not know much about your human cultivation matters either. Your friend will need some time to merge with this remains I left behind; you should act as his guardian for now."
"Esteemed elder, please wait; Junior has a few more questions."
"Go ahead."
"What changes will Xiao Hei undergo after merging with this skeleton?"
"Haha! You are quite cautious. I have no interest in such trivial matters; rest assured, I have been dead for countless years now. What remains is merely a fragment of my soul, waiting for an heir to come along. Now that my heir has arrived and once he completes the merging process, my mission will be fulfilled and I will dissipate. He will gain the Qilin Bloodline; however, to become a true Qilin, he has a long road ahead and will need a lengthy period to purify his Bloodline."
"Rest assured, esteemed elder; Junior will do everything in his power to protect Xiao Hei until he becomes strong enough. One more question: why do you appear here? This place does not seem suitable for you to reside."
Mo Wen's question was reasonable; this area still belonged to Cloud Mist Forest. Although it was a perilous place, it was not inaccessible. A Qilin living here would surely be discovered. After its death, its remains would also be taken away—after all, it was a Divine Beast's skeleton, rare beyond measure. Logically speaking, it should have found a secluded place to rest eternally.
