Nezha felt something within him melt away. Throughout his life, apart from his parents, no one had known his secret. He had lived in fear and concealment, afraid of being discovered, afraid of being rejected. Yet now, Ao Bing not only accepted this secret but faced it with such calmness, as if it were merely an ordinary trait rather than some strange ability.
"Thank you," Nezha said softly, the wariness in his eyes gradually dissipating. "You’re the first person to know about this, besides my parents."
Ao Bing nodded, a complex emotion in his gaze that Nezha couldn't quite decipher, as if he were contemplating something. Finally, he asked, "Can you show me? I mean, in a controlled way."
Nezha hesitated. "Are you sure?"
"If you don’t mind," Ao Bing replied, his tone still calm but with a clear spark of curiosity in his eyes.
After a moment of thought, Nezha nodded. He stood up and walked to the desk, picking up a lamp. He unplugged it and gently unscrewed the bulb, cradling it in his hands.
"Watch closely," Nezha took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and focused. A few seconds later, his fingertips began to flicker with a faint red glow, followed by tiny sparks, and finally a subtle current of electricity.
To their astonishment, the unplugged bulb lit up in his hands, casting a soft light that illuminated their faces.
Ao Bing held his breath, staring intently at the scene before him. The light from the bulb danced in his blue pupils, reflecting a galaxy of brilliance.
"This... this is incredible," Ao Bing said softly, his voice tinged with undeniable shock and awe. "You have complete control over this ability?"
Nezha smiled slightly; the brightness of the bulb intensified with his mood. "Basically. I used to lose control when I was younger; now I only unconsciously use it when I'm emotionally charged or in self-defense situations—like just now."
He slowly released his grip on the bulb, and its glow gradually faded. Nezha placed the bulb back into the lamp and returned to sit on the bed.
"Football training is actually very helpful for controlling my abilities," he continued to explain. "Exercise can release excess energy, allowing me to maintain balance. Those strict trainings and rules, although I seem to resist them on the surface, are actually helping me gain control over myself."
Ao Bing nodded thoughtfully. "So your rebellious behavior..."
"Part of it is a normal expression of adolescence, and part of it is an instinctive rebellion against constraints," Nezha admitted. "I understand the importance of rules and restrictions, but sometimes I just can't control the impulse to break free."
"I understand," Ao Bing said softly, his gaze gentle. "Everyone has their own burdens and secrets."
Nezha lifted his head, keenly sensing the implication in Ao Bing's words. "Do you have your own secrets too?"
Ao Bing's expression instantly became complex. He lowered his head, his fingers unconsciously rubbing the bed sheets. "Everyone has a side they don't want others to know about."
"Like what?" Nezha pressed, suddenly filled with curiosity about his usually mysterious roommate.
Ao Bing fell silent for a moment, seemingly struggling internally. Just when Nezha thought he wouldn't answer, Ao Bing looked up and met Nezha's gaze directly. "If I told you I'm not an ordinary person, would you believe me?"
Nezha was taken aback for a moment before breaking into an understanding smile. "So those books and legends about dragons..."
"You noticed?" Ao Bing said, somewhat surprised.
"I saw you reading those books about water and dragons in the library today, and I happened to catch a glimpse of that ancient book on your bedside table with many dragon patterns in it," Nezha explained. "To be honest, I've always felt there was something unusual about you, as if... you don't belong to this world."
