Mo Wen covered his face with both hands and wiped the sweat from his brow. He picked up Xiao Hei and entered the forest, needing to find a suitable place to spend the night before darkness fell. He couldn't return to the cabin in the woods; the White-Clad Woman had already discovered his presence. If she abandoned her pursuit of Old Lu to come after him, she would undoubtedly head for the small cabin, as it would be far too easy for someone of her caliber to locate it. Moreover, Old Lu had warned him against lingering. Still, he made a brief return to the cabin, having lived there for three or four years; it was hard not to feel a sense of attachment. After standing in front of the cabin for a moment, he took Xiao Hei to the hot spring on the back mountain. Gazing at the spring, memories of the past few years flooded his mind, and he couldn't help but sigh, "In a few days, this place will probably become a cave for some Demon Beast." While Mo Wen was lost in thought, Xiao Hei, who had been following him, jumped straight into the pool and began to swim.
"Xiao Hei, we need to go," Mo Wen said helplessly as he watched Xiao Hei enjoying himself. "If you like it here, we can find a spring ten times bigger than this one in the future." Upon hearing Mo Wen's words, Xiao Hei immediately leaped out of the pool and shook off the water. The pair exited the cave and disappeared into the forest, leaving behind a hot spring that froze over with their departure.
...
"Xiao Hei, where do you think we should look for a place to spend the night?" Mo Wen had never camped outdoors before. Although Old Lu had taught him some relevant knowledge, knowledge was ultimately just knowledge; without practical experience, he felt utterly lost now. The forest was quite dark, and there might be Chimeras lurking about at night. As for caves, that was out of the question; they were all occupied by Demon Beasts. This area was known as a perilous land where both Demon Beasts and Chimeras vastly outnumbered and outmatched those outside. Thus, searching for caves or staying in the woods was ruled out. The only options left for a suitable overnight spot were either on top of a mountain or in a tree. However, when he climbed to the treetops and looked out, all he could see were endless trees. A wave of confusion washed over him as he realized he could only ask Xiao Hei for help—yet Xiao Hei could not respond.
During his preparation to escape, Mo Wen had discussed routes out of the forest with Old Lu because Old Lu had given him an Identity Tag indicating Lianyun Kingdom and instructed him to head toward Lianyun Empire. Therefore, he could only choose to go in the direction of Lianyun Kingdom; venturing toward either of the other two Empires would bring unnecessary trouble due to his identity. Following the normal route downstream along Yan Luo River would be the fastest way; however, that area was teeming with Demon Beasts and Chimeras, not to mention unknown dangers lurking in the river itself. The safest route would be to head east away from the riverbank and then veer south.
Mo Wen navigated through the forest with Xiao Hei by his side, moving eastward while gradually hearing less of Dahe's roaring waters behind them. The forest was filled with towering trees reaching dozens of feet high; their massive canopies blocked most of the sunlight while beams of light filtered through gaps in the leaves and illuminated patches on the ground below. Periodically, Mo Wen would climb up a tree to ascertain his direction and ensure he wasn't going off course while also checking for any potential dangers ahead. From atop a tree, he could see far into the distance; however, on the ground, visibility was severely limited due to surrounding trees blocking his view. Relying solely on his instincts meant that by the time he noticed danger, he might already be trapped in it.
