A Ze looked at Xiao You's back, feeling a twinge of regret. He felt as if he had missed something important.
He lowered his head, gazing at the book in his hands, "The Little Prince," where the little fox was smiling at the little prince.
A Ze did not sit under the Banyan Tree for long.
He closed the book and got up, walking towards his grandmother's house.
A Ze's grandmother's house was a typical old rural home, with white walls and green tiles. In front of the house was a small yard filled with flowers and vegetables.
As he stepped into the yard, A Ze was greeted by a familiar fragrance.
It was the scent of Osmanthus Cake.
His grandmother was busy in the kitchen, where a steaming bamboo basket sat on the stove, releasing waves of sweet aroma.
"Grandma," A Ze called softly.
His grandmother turned around, and upon seeing A Ze, her face broke into a kind smile.
"A Ze is back! Are you hungry? Grandma made Osmanthus Cake; come and have a taste."
She took a piece of Osmanthus Cake from the steamer and handed it to A Ze.
Osmanthus Cake was his grandmother's specialty and his favorite snack from childhood.
A Ze took the Osmanthus Cake, took a bite, and found it soft and sweet, with a hint of osmanthus fragrance.
"Is it good?" his grandmother asked with a smile.
A Ze nodded. "It's delicious."
Grandma looked at A Ze, her eyes filled with affection.
"A Ze, how are you finding it here?"
A Ze hesitated for a moment and replied, "It's... it's okay."
Grandma knew that A Ze was introverted and not good at expressing his feelings.
"A Ze, I know you are a good child, just a bit quiet," Grandma said. "That's alright, take your time. This is your home; you can relax here."
A Ze nodded but remained silent.
"A Ze, I saw you talking to a little girl under the big Banyan Tree at the village entrance. Whose child is she?" Grandma asked.
A Ze's face turned slightly red as he softly said, "Her... her name is Xiao You. She lives at the Village East End."
"Xiao You?" Grandma thought for a moment. "Oh, is she the one with two braids who runs around in the fields all day?"
A Ze nodded.
Grandma smiled. "That girl is quite lively. It's nice that you are friends with her."
A Ze didn't respond; he simply continued eating the Osmanthus Cake.
Grandma didn't say anything more. She believed that one day, A Ze would run freely across this land like Xiao You, laughing joyfully.
After finishing the Osmanthus Cake, A Ze sat in Grandma's small yard for a while.
Sunlight filtered through the leaves, warming him gently.
He looked at the flowers and plants in the yard, listened to the birds chirping in the branches, and felt a sense of peace in his heart.
He thought of Xiao You, her radiant smile, and the fireflies she had mentioned.
Suddenly, he felt a pang of regret for not agreeing to go see the fireflies with her yesterday.
Perhaps it would have been a very interesting night.
He stood up and walked out of the yard, aimlessly wandering through the village.
Before he knew it, he had walked outside the village and arrived at the familiar fields.
The evening sunlight was no longer so glaring.
The fields were a sea of golden hues, with rice ears gently swaying in the breeze, producing a rustling sound.
A Ze walked slowly along the edge of the field, enjoying this tranquil feeling.
Suddenly, he spotted a familiar figure squatting by the edge of the field, seemingly engaged in some activity.
It was Xiao You.
She was wearing a pink dress, her hair styled in two braids, and she held a small net in her hands.
