As I walked down the long corridor, I noticed the photographs of past participants in the 'Xing Chen Plan' hanging on the walls. The last photo featured Lu Chen, his youthful face strikingly vivid. Back then, he lacked the sharpness he possessed now, and his eyes held a hint of naivety.
"We're here." Chen Yu pushed open a heavy wooden door. "This is the conference room for the first round of testing."
Inside the conference room sat two people. A girl in a red suit was flipping through documents, while a boy was intently focused on his laptop. As I entered, they both looked up, their gazes assessing.
"This is Su Wan," Chen Yu introduced, "you are all members of the first group."
I had just taken my seat when the door swung open again. Lu Chen walked in, dressed in a deep blue shirt with sleeves casually rolled up to his elbows, revealing his strong forearms.
"Welcome, everyone," he said, scanning our trio. "Before we begin, I have a question for you: what is the most important thing in the financial industry?"
"Risk control," the girl in red answered immediately.
"Market insight," the boy adjusted his glasses.
I hesitated for a moment before responding, "Human nature."
Lu Chen's gaze lingered on me. "Explain."
"Because the essence of finance is trust between people," I tried to keep my voice steady. "No matter how perfect a model or how precise the data is, if human nature is ignored, it can lead to catastrophic consequences."
Lu Chen nodded slightly, a glimmer of approval in his eyes. "Very well. Now, let's start the first test."
Chen Yu switched on the projector, and a complex financial report appeared on the screen. "This is a company about to go public; you have three hours to identify any issues within it."
I opened the document and was immediately drawn in by the dense numbers. The company's profit growth curve was astonishingly perfect, but my intuition told me there had to be something wrong.
As time ticked away, the only sounds in the conference room were the clattering of keyboards and rustling of papers. I noticed that the girl in red occasionally glanced at my screen while the boy was busy calculating something.
Suddenly, I spotted an anomaly: the company's accounts receivable were growing at a rate far exceeding that of its revenue. This didn't make sense.
"Time's up," Lu Chen announced. "Please present your findings."
The girl in red spoke first, pointing out some superficial financial issues. The boy analyzed the company's valuation using complex models. When it was my turn, I took a deep breath and said, "I believe this company is fabricating revenue."
Silence fell over the room.
"Basis for your claim?" Lu Chen asked.
"The abnormal growth in accounts receivable," I pulled up my chart. "Additionally, I checked their major clients and found that three of them share the same registered address; they are likely shell companies."
Lu Chen exchanged glances with Chen Yu. "Continue."
"More importantly," I displayed another set of data, "the company's cash flow does not align with its profits at all. I suspect they are engaging in Triangular Trade to inflate revenue through related companies."
Lu Chen stood up and walked in front of me. "If this is true, what will you do?"
"I would immediately halt the IPO plan," I replied without hesitation, "and initiate an internal investigation. This concerns not only the interests of the investors but also the reputation of the company."
Lu Chen was silent for a few seconds before suddenly laughing. "Congratulations, you've passed the first round of testing."
