Darkness poured down from the rift in the sky, enveloping the entire Changling Village in an eerie shadow. The control panel revealed beneath the stone tablet emitted a faint glow, waiting for the final activation key.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" Zhou Jing's voice crackled through the intercom. We still didn't know what effect this device would have.
"We have no choice," I replied. "The energy readings show that in three minutes, that rift will fully open."
I gazed up at the sky. Through my special vision, I could see more World Eaters surging out from the gap. They circled high above, forming a massive vortex, like a dark net waiting to close in.
Taking a deep breath, I removed my mask. This was the cosmic civilization mask I had brought back from Antarctica, containing the information of an entire civilization's network. As I prepared to place it into the slot, I suddenly noticed a detail.
"Wait," I said, carefully observing the patterns on the control panel. These symbols—those ancient engravings—were slowly moving, as if some kind of program was running. Strangely, the arrangement of these symbols was completely opposite to those on the mask.
"This isn't a coincidence," Kong Yang said. "Do you remember the lesson we learned in Antarctica?"
Yin and Yang complement each other! Suddenly, it dawned on me: this control panel wasn't meant to harness the power of the mask; it was meant to complement it!
At that moment, the ground shook violently. From the rhythm of the tremors, it seemed that some mechanism underground had been triggered. The sound of gears turning echoed throughout the village.
"Look!" Miho pointed at the ground.
The earth began to crack open—not from destruction, but as if it were following some precise rhythm. Countless metal components rose from beneath, gradually assembling into a massive three-dimensional structure.
I squinted my eyes. "Is that... a reflective device?"
Exactly! The entire Changling Village was transforming into a gigantic energy reflection array. And where the stone tablet stood was precisely the control hub of this device.
"I understand now," I said. "They intend to utilize the energy of the World Eaters themselves!"
The dark vortex in the sky seemed to sense this threat and began launching more ferocious attacks. Countless energy tendrils lashed against the village's protective shield, trying to halt the activation of the device.
"We're out of time!" Stevenson’s voice came through the intercom. "Readings from the Antarctic base show that the space-time rift is expanding. We must act immediately!"
I nodded but did not place the mask into its slot. Instead, I put it back on my face and pressed my palm against the control panel.
"Grant me your power," I said to the mask.
Instantly, an unprecedented flow of information surged into my consciousness. I felt myself connecting with two systems: one from the cosmic civilization network and one from this ancient device. As these two forces converged within me, I finally understood what this place truly was.
Changling Village was not just an observation station; it was a special node—a checkpoint in an immune system designed to respond to uncontrolled civilizational invasions. And now, it was time to activate it.
"Everyone prepare," I said. "It might get a bit bumpy."
As my consciousness triggered the program, the entire village lit up brilliantly.
