I woke up in a hospital room. The harsh overhead lights made it difficult for me to open my eyes, and a nurse was changing my IV drip.
"You're awake?" It was Honda Miho's voice.
I struggled to sit up. "Where's Zhou Jing? What about the kids?"
"They're all fine," she said. "The SWAT team arrived just in time and rescued everyone."
At that moment, Jiang Zhendong walked in. His expression was serious. "We've sealed off the data in the hospital basement, but Koji Yamada has escaped."
"Where did he go?" I asked.
"Japan," Honda Miho replied. "He must have returned to headquarters."
I studied this mysterious Japanese woman closely. She appeared to be in her forties, dressed simply, and there was nothing about her that suggested she was a descendant of the Yamamoto Family.
Seeing my confusion, she forced a smile. "You must be curious why I betrayed my family."
"Yes," I admitted.
She pulled an old photo album from her bag. "Look at this."
The first page of the album showed a family portrait. An elderly man with gold-rimmed glasses sat in the center, surrounded by a dozen men and women dressed in kimonos. I instantly recognized the man as Yamamoto Ichiro.
"This photo is from years ago," she said. "I was only ten then and knew nothing about the family's research." She turned to the next page. The photo depicted a laboratory filled with bronze masks. A group of people in lab coats surrounded an operating table where a little girl lay.
"This is my sister, Michiko." Her voice trembled slightly. "Like me, she carried a special blood type. But hers was purer than mine, so they used her for experiments?"
"Yes." Honda Miho clenched her fists. "The Yamamoto Family has always sought the perfect blood type. The so-called Eternal Ritual involves using this blood to prolong their lives. Even their own descendants would become test subjects if their blood type was suitable."
"So you escaped?" I asked.
"It wasn't just an escape." She pulled out a piece of paper from the album. "This is Yamamoto Ichiro's experimental record from back then. They began researching mysterious substances in blood during wartime and later discovered that some people's blood contained a special gene that could mutate under moonlight."
"Wait," I interrupted her, "moonlight?"
"Yes," she confirmed. "This gene activates with the phases of the moon. They created bronze masks specifically to extract the most potent blood on nights of the full moon."
Jiang Zhendong interjected, "So that's why they established bases in China? To find carriers?"
"Not just in China," she replied. "They have secret bases all over the world. And the real headquarters is an underground research facility at the foot of Mount Fuji in Japan."
She opened her phone and pulled up a satellite image: this was taken last month. Look at the layout of this building complex; it’s exactly the same as the underground facility in Changling Village! I exclaimed.
That’s right. All the outposts are built according to the same design. They believe that this layout can maximize the power of moonlight.
Just then, Zhou Jing walked in. Her arm was wrapped in bandages, but she seemed to be in good spirits.
We’ve decrypted Yamada’s notebook, she said. It mentioned an important meeting at Mount Fuji in a few days. All the heads of the divisions are required to attend.
What kind of meeting? Jiang Zhendong asked.
The final activation ceremony for the Lunar Eclipse Project. Honda Miho's face turned pale; they plan to activate all the extraction devices at the moment of total lunar eclipse.
Her words were cut short as a nurse entered to change her bandages. Once the nurse left, she lowered her voice and continued:
They’ve developed a new type of mask. It’s no longer just an extraction device; it can inject special substances from the blood directly into the user’s body. If the plan succeeds, they will gain unprecedented power.
We must stop them, I said firmly.
But we don’t have enforcement authority, Jiang Zhendong replied, regarding Japan.
I can take you there, Honda Miho offered. I still have connections at the research institute and can arrange for you to infiltrate as researchers.
That’s too dangerous! Jiang Zhendong protested. What if—
We have no choice, I interrupted him. The meeting at Mount Fuji is our only opportunity. If we can capture key members of the Yamamoto Family, we can completely dismantle this organization.
The room fell silent. Outside, a new moon had just risen. In two weeks, it would be the night of the total lunar eclipse. Meanwhile, a larger conspiracy was brewing in the underground research facility at the foot of Mount Fuji.
