“Mo, you’ve really solidified your foundation now; you can enter the Refining Qi Realm. You’re doing well, although you’re still a bit behind Old Man,” Old Lu said, looking at the seven-year-old Mo Wen. Despite his words, Old Lu knew that it had taken a year to complete the entire Refining Body Realm, a speed that even the so-called Peerless Genius outside couldn’t match. He was becoming increasingly interested in the child before him.
“By the way, can you fulfill the promise you made to me back then?” Old Lu continued.
“What promise?”
“Hey! Are you trying to back out?”
“How could I dare? You’re so formidable, but I don’t have any wine for you right now,” Mo Wen said, shrinking his neck.
“I was talking about roasted meat. I know you don’t have any wine; I’ll allow you to owe me that. But starting tomorrow, the roasting will be your responsibility,” he said, tossing Mo Wen a thick book made of beast skin. It looked similar to the Bai Cao Jing in material, and upon seeing the title, Mo Wen’s mouth twitched—The Ten Thousand Beasts Diagram.
“Old Lu, you wrote this book, didn’t you?”
“The Old Man doesn’t have that kind of free time. If I did, I wouldn’t waste it on something so boring. If I had time to compile this book, I’d rather take a nap.” This book was indeed not written by him; he had taken it from someone else.
“Old Lu, if you want me to cook, you have to take me hunting and give me some weapons.”
“Here.” He handed Mo Wen a knife.
“A kitchen knife!” Mo Wen exclaimed as he examined the knife he received. The blade was curved from the tip to the belly and straight from the belly to the handle.
“You don’t use a kitchen knife for cooking? What else would you use? And this isn’t even called a kitchen knife.”
“Does this knife have another name?” Mo Wen asked curiously, thinking it must have an impressive title.
“This knife is called a Butcher Knife. It can cut and chop; if used well, it can also skin and debone. In short, don’t underestimate this knife.”
Mo Wen had expected some grand history behind the knife since it was presented by Old Lu, but it turned out to be just an ordinary Butcher Knife. Not wanting to dwell on that issue further, he set the knife aside and began flipping through The Ten Thousand Beasts Diagram. Like the Bai Cao Jing, it contained detailed descriptions of various beasts and classified them into levels. He learned from the book that beasts were a general term divided into Beast, Demon Beast, and Divine Beast categories. Currently, he could only deal with relatively weaker beasts; fortunately, there were no Demon Beasts or Divine Beasts nearby because of Old Lu’s overwhelming aura—the Demon Beasts had long fled or ended up in Old Lu’s Temple of the Five Viscera. Divine Beasts were legendary creatures in this world.
The next day, he set off into the mountains with his Butcher Knife and a medicine basket. By afternoon, he returned carrying a Beast and two wild chickens while his basket held various herbs and some unknown broad leaves. He placed everything by a small stream beside the mountain and skillfully began to gut and skin the Beast while plucking feathers from the wild chickens. He cleaned the herbs thoroughly and dried them over the fire before grinding them into powder.
An hour later, the aroma of roasted meat wafted through the woods. Old Lu had somehow appeared by the fire pit without Mo Wen noticing him, watching as the Beast roasted over the charcoal flames. Mo Wen was focused on his task, sprinkling herb powder over the meat while turning it on the wooden grill.
“Mo, what kind of method is this? The Old Man has never seen anything like it; it looks delicious,” Old Lu sniffed as he took in the scent of the meat sizzling on the grill. After continuous turning and roasting, juices began to sizzle out of the meat, enhanced by the herb powder that now emitted an enticing aroma.
“I don’t really know; I just thought about making roasted meat and ended up doing it this way. It seems like I used to do this often,” he replied while continuing to sprinkle herb powder and salt over the meat.
