In the afternoon, a few of them gathered for a meal. Bai Zhousheng's injuries had been treated; he was only suffering from a nosebleed and had no broken bones. There was a bruise on his forehead. He still wore a cheerful smile, but his brothers were less pleased.
Jiang Shiyu glanced at the man again—he had a round face and a scruffy beard. When he caught Jiang Shiyu's gaze, he smirked slightly, his round eyes sparkling with mischief. Jiang Shiyu quietly looked away.
They all sat together indoors, as it was quite chilly outside in the evening. Through the large glass wall, they could see the sea and beach not far away. The restaurant specialized in local seafood dishes, and with many people around, there was plenty to choose from.
Bai Zhousheng was particularly attentive to Yun Xian, even helping her pick food from the dishes, worried that she might not get enough to eat. When Yun saw the garlic sprinkled on the lobster, she pushed it aside before putting it in her mouth.
Jiang Shiyu sat across from them, not looking their way as he quietly ate. He pushed aside any dishes that contained garlic with his serving chopsticks. His movements were relaxed and leisurely, as if he were playing rather than eating.
Shu Ran couldn’t stand it any longer. "You have quite a few issues with your eating habits! How are we supposed to enjoy our meal like this?"
After pushing aside the last bit of garlic, Jiang Shiyu set down his serving chopsticks and picked up his own to grab some food. He didn’t spare a glance at anyone and spoke in an extremely flat tone. "If you like garlic so much, you can serve yourself separately; I just pushed aside a whole pile."
Shu Ran felt frustrated; if it were before, she would have complained to Yun, but now she could only hold it in. Cheng Zhou offered her some food instead, saying, "Don’t mind that single old man."
Hearing this made Shu Ran feel better. Jiang Shiyu cast a faint glance at Cheng Zhou before lowering his eyelids, lacking enthusiasm and hardly eating much.
After finishing their meal, they went shopping. Bai Zhousheng and the man, both locals, took the initiative to act as tour guides. Yun wore a dark green spaghetti strap dress; with the evening wind blowing, she added a shawl over her shoulders. Her curly hair was styled in a side ponytail that cascaded softly down her back.
Shu Ran had been forced by Cheng Zhou to wear pants; the two of them held hands as they strolled through the shops. Jiang Shiyu’s gaze often fell on Bai Zhousheng intentionally or unintentionally.
Bai Zhousheng was overly attentive while the man beside him remained rather indifferent towards Yun and Shu Ran. There was even a hint of hostility in his eyes when he looked at Yun.
The night was crowded, and Bai Zhousheng led the way, deliberately pushing against Yun, causing him to fall behind. Jiang Shiyu gently placed a hand on her back, standing beside her as if to protect her.
Yun found it strange; his gaze was not on her, and he didn't say a word. She had no intention of speaking either, waiting for a less crowded spot. Just then, Bai Zhousheng turned around, and Jiang Shiyu happened to lower his hand.
"Yun, Shu Ran, there are handmade woven hats for sale here. Do you want to buy one?"
The two of them walked over to take a look. Yun picked one up and put it on her head, asking Shu Ran, "Does it look good?"
Shu Ran nodded, "It looks nice, but this little green flower doesn't quite suit you."
Yun took it off; the green flower indeed made one think too much. She switched to one with a pink flower. At just over fifty yuan, it wasn't expensive, especially since it was handmade.
Yun and Shu Ran each chose one. Shu Ran then picked out a men's hat and said to Cheng Zhou, "Lower your head."
Cheng Zhou looked at the hat with disdain and replied, "No."
Shu Ran's expression changed, "Are you going to wear it or not?"
Cheng Zhou still refused. Frustrated, Shu Ran tossed the hat down and pulled Yun away.
Cheng Zhou followed them.
The shopkeeper called out, "You haven't paid yet!"
Jiang Shiyu scanned the code with his phone and asked, "How much?"
"Two hats."
After paying, Jiang Shiyu looked up and saw nothing but heads; they had already lost sight of them.
Shu Ran was in a bad mood and hard to appease. Cheng Zhou firmly held her hand. Just as they were in the middle of their quarrel, Cheng Zhou took Shu Ran away by himself.
Bai Zhousheng laughed and said, "Those two are feeding each other dog food!"
Their interaction always seemed like this; no matter what happened, as long as Shu Ran was upset, Cheng Zhou would comfort her.
But what if Shu Ran was in the wrong?
Cheng Zhou would still take a step back to soothe her and then reason with her.
Bai Zhousheng gazed at the clouds, subtly inching closer. It felt quite nice. The man beside her, whether intentionally or not, lightly brushed against her arm. Bai Zhousheng instinctively grasped his pinky finger. Only then did the man smile, refraining from any further small gestures.
Yun was examining the trinkets at a stall when Jiang Shiyu approached her. Bai Zhousheng leaned in closer to Yun. "I have plenty at home; I can give you some, no need to buy."
Yun was focused on a beautiful shell and declined, saying, "No, I just want to buy one or two things, and they’re not expensive."
The man’s expression soured again. Seeing Yun so absorbed in the shells, Bai Zhousheng turned and smiled helplessly at him before gently nudging him aside to talk.
Jiang Shiyu came over and said to Yun, "Shu Ran is looking for you."
Yun looked up. "Where is she?"
"Up ahead." With that, Jiang Shiyu walked away.
Yun followed him without noticing the two behind her. Once Bai Zhousheng had calmed the man down and turned around, she realized Yun had vanished.
Yun had followed Jiang Shiyu outside; it was less crowded there, with fewer people around.
"Jiang Shiyu, where’s Ran Ran?"
Jiang Shiyu turned to look at her. "She went back."
"I told you to return early too."
Yun caught on to his teasing and shot him an annoyed glance. "You’re ridiculous."
She pulled out her phone to call Shu Ran. When the call connected, it was Cheng Zhou who answered.
"Hello! Yun, we’re heading back. Be careful on your own."
"Oh, okay."
After hanging up, Yun glanced at Jiang Shiyu, sizing him up. His hair was styled up, accentuating his sharp features with an edgy allure. He wore a sleeveless black shirt that showcased his toned arms and well-defined lines; his broad shoulders tapered down to a narrow waist, and his long legs were clad in black casual pants.
