Yun Li and He Lin Cheng had arranged to meet at ten in the morning to look at cars. This time, Yun Li didn’t ask Senior He to pick her up; she went on her own.
Upon arriving at the dealership, a male salesperson warmly invited them inside. He went to pour two cups of tea for them, offering some Juju Tea to drink.
"You're here to buy a car, right?" the salesperson asked, looking at Yun Li.
"Yes," she replied.
"I heard you prefer smaller cars. Most of our customers are ladies who like compact vehicles," he said as he led them to a beige car. To be honest, this car was indeed something a girl would like; its headlights resembled cat eyes, blinking cutely.
Yun Li thought it looked quite nice. The salesperson began to introduce the features of the car, but Yun Li wasn’t very knowledgeable about cars. She understood it was an electric vehicle and that there were several color options available. The price was also reasonable.
After learning about this model, Yun Li wanted to check out a few more brands. She and He Lin Cheng decided to go for lunch first, and after their meal, they continued on to another dealership.
BMW and Audi were both brands that girls typically liked, so after lunch, He Lin Cheng took her to the Audi dealership first. The sales approach was similar everywhere: they would have you sit for a while, then bring out a brochure for you to look at before taking you to see the cars and allowing you to sit inside and test them out.
These procedures were quite standard, but since Yun Li didn’t know much about cars, she found herself feeling a bit bored as she struggled to understand what the salesperson was saying. It was all becoming overwhelming.
After leaving the dealership, Yun Li felt somewhat tired. She yawned, her eyes showing signs of fatigue. It had already taken over three hours just visiting two dealerships. Glancing at her phone, she saw it was already one o'clock.
She thought about checking out one last place before they moved on. They got into the car and headed to their next destination when suddenly her phone rang. It was Jiang Shiyu calling via video chat; he must have wanted to speak with the director.
Deciding against answering the video call, she hung up and texted back: "The director is at home; I'm out right now. I’ll show you when I get back."
Just as she sent the message, his video call came through again. Yun Li frowned slightly before answering it. Jiang Shiyu looked concerned as he stared at her; it seemed the director had just come out and was sitting downstairs.
Yun Li widened her eyes. Before leaving, she had told the director not to let it go out. Was he okay?
"Is there a problem? Whose car are you in?" he asked.
Yun Li felt something was off about his question, as if he were trying to catch an unfaithful wife.
"Since the director is fine, I’ll hang up now."
"Try hanging up," he said in a low voice, his brows furrowed with an intimidating pressure.
Upon hearing this, Yun Li hung up without hesitation. His threat no longer held any weight with her.
She sent a message to Jiang Shiyu: "Since you're back, why don’t you pick up the director today? I have some of his favorite food at home. I can send it over later, or you can buy something new."
Jiang Shiyu read the message and felt even more pressure building. He looked down at the director, who was eagerly watching him.
"Your mom doesn’t want you anymore."
The director immediately protested loudly, pouncing on him. "You're lying! Mommy wouldn’t abandon me!"
"You’re useless; Mommy doesn’t want you," Jiang Shiyu retorted.
The director seemed to understand and snickered, lightly tapping the director's head. "Look at your mom now; someone else has taken her away!"
Hearing this, the director immediately bared his teeth and barked, as if thinking of someone.
By the time Yun Li finished looking at cars, she was too tired to glance again and thought to herself how exhausting car shopping could be! She felt sleepy.
The two of them got into the car, and He Lin Cheng chuckled softly. "Car shopping can be tiring. Shall we go eat?"
Thinking that the director had already been picked up and there was no rush to get back home, Yun Li agreed.
It was hot outside, so they decided to go to a mall where the air conditioning was strong enough to dispel the heat instantly.
They found a Hunan Restaurant and ordered three dishes.
Yun Li took a sip of the sour plum juice from the restaurant and felt her appetite awaken immediately.
"Did you find any cars you liked today?"
Yun Li didn’t want to continue looking and quickly decided, "Let’s go with that Ora Cat! It’s quite compact and cute, and the interior has a bit of a retro vibe. I like it."
"Let's make plans for next weekend," he said.
The two of them took nearly an hour to finish their meal. He Lin Cheng drove Yun Li back, parking the car in the community lot. Yun Li still felt apologetic about what had happened yesterday.
In her eyes, He Lin Cheng was a special presence. She admired him, respected him; he was her partner, her companion, and also her friend. During the two years of workplace bullying, both He Lin Cheng and the Team Leader had provided her with significant support. The director had nearly harmed him, and out of both emotion and reason, she felt she owed him an apology.
Remembering the tea her father had left here last time, she thought about giving it to senior He.
