It was noon when Yun Li saw the message. She had just finished her class and was on her way to the cafeteria when she opened her phone for a quick glance. At first, she felt a rush of joy upon seeing the message, but that quickly turned into unease. It was past three in the morning; something felt off about him sending a message at such an odd hour.
She called him, but there was no answer.
"Have you returned to Jing City?"
That evening, after class, Yun Li still hadn't received a reply from him. Could it be that his parents had caught him again? Her fingers tightened around her phone, her pink nails turning pale in an instant. She didn’t have time to change; she was still in her form-fitting clothes with just a sweater thrown over. The black wide-leg pants made her legs appear even longer.
In a hurry, she dashed out of the school gates. Suddenly, she stopped. Where should she go to find him? The sky was darkening, and the chill in the air intensified. The only light above illuminated her surroundings, but it left her feeling lost.
Just then, her phone rang. She quickly answered, and Jiang Shiyu's deep, lazy voice instantly calmed her racing heart.
"Sorry, Hao Hao, I didn’t see my phone. I’m almost at your school gate."
"I'm right outside," Yun Li replied.
There was a brief pause on the other end before he continued, "Are you coming out to buy something? I was just about to look for you. When you messaged me in the middle of the night, I thought something happened."
A taxi pulled up not far away, and Jiang Shiyu got out. He was tall, his figure partially silhouetted against the car as he stepped out. Holding his phone up, he scanned the area for Yun Li.
With a teasing smile, he said, "You could be a detective with those late-night messages."
Wrapped in the thick darkness of night, he exuded an aura of melancholy that inexplicably tugged at Yun Li's heart. She rushed over and stood before Jiang Shiyu as he approached.
"Did you not sleep well? You have dark circles under your eyes."
Jiang Shiyu took her hand; it was cold. He rubbed his hands together for warmth and asked, "Do you have classes tomorrow?"
Yun Li nodded. "We have rehearsals tomorrow, but I'm free Friday afternoon."
"Alright, then! I'll pick you up on Friday afternoon."
Yun Li felt a pang of reluctance to leave. She looked at Jiang Shiyu for a moment; his eyes concealed a deeper emotion, and although he smiled, there was a lack of enthusiasm, and fatigue lingered in his gaze.
"Did you just come back from the base?" she asked.
"No, I came from Jiangzhou." After a pause, he added, "I went to see my grandfather."
"Go home then! You need to get up early tomorrow."
Yun Li nodded and took a few steps before turning back to see him standing alone in the dim light, which barely reached him. He still wore that carefree smile, just like before.
With one hand in his pocket, he waved at her. "Go on!"
Suddenly, an inexplicable emotion surged in Yun Li's heart; she felt a bit sad. Perhaps it was because they hadn't seen each other for a long time.
She ran back to him and said, "Wait for me a moment."
With that, she turned and dashed into the school.
The distance from the school gate to the dormitory took about ten minutes. Anxious and worried that Jiang Shiyu would be waiting too long, she hurriedly hopped on a bike and rode over.
She rushed upstairs to grab some clothes and took her ID from the drawer. There was no time to chat with Qin Nianchu and the others before she dashed out.
Jiang Shiyu stood with his back to her, watching the cars pass by when his phone buzzed.
He picked it up to check the message.
"You've arrived in Jing City. Go visit your grandfather tomorrow."
Jiang Shiyu replied, "No time."
There was no response from the other side, as if they already knew what he would say.
He lowered his eyelids; the night was thick, obscuring the emotions in his eyes.
Suddenly, he heard a clear voice calling out breathlessly behind him: "Jiang Shiyu!"
He turned to see Yun Li running toward him against the light. Her big almond-shaped eyes were filled with his reflection. She stopped to catch her breath and said, "Let's go stay somewhere else; I'll keep you company."
Jiang Shiyu lowered his eyes to look at her and reached out to take her bag. "Alright."
