Yun Li couldn't cook, so she helped by washing the vegetables behind him. "I don't eat rice, so make less," she said.
Jiang Shiyu poured the newly bought rice into the storage box.
Yun Li washed the vegetables meticulously and gently, afraid that she might miss some dirt.
Jiang Shiyu rinsed the rice clean and placed it in the rice cooker, pressing the button to start cooking. Seeing her still washing the cabbage piece by piece, he took the cleaned meat to cut it up. He sliced the beef into strips, chopped the chili peppers, smashed some garlic, diced ginger, and chopped green onions in just a few minutes, placing everything in a bowl to prepare.
Turning his head, he noticed Yun Li was still washing that cabbage.
Jiang Shiyu took the crucian carp to wash it clean and then marinated it with green onions, ginger, garlic, and cooking wine, kneading it a bit.
By the time he finished stir-frying the beef with chili peppers, Yun Li had also finished washing the cabbage.
Yun Li grabbed a box of yogurt to drink. The cold, thick yogurt had a slight sourness as she sipped it while organizing the items from her large shopping bag.
She placed her new toothbrush, which was white, alongside a pink cup for brushing teeth in the bathroom outside. She also put in a towel.
Her feet were clad in the pink slippers Jiang Shiyu had just bought, making a soft sound as she walked around the house.
In the open kitchen, Jiang Shiyu was busy with his tall and slender figure. Hearing her bustling around, he turned to glance at her.
"Toiletries go in the master bathroom," she said.
Yun Li exclaimed, "In the master?"
"Otherwise, do you want to sleep in the living room?"
What was she thinking? He wouldn't want me to sleep with him, would he?
Yun Li instinctively rejected that idea; it didn't seem appropriate!
Jiang Shiyu covered the pot to steam the fish and turned around with his arms crossed, watching her leisurely. "Is sleeping in the living room suitable then?"
Yun Li held the yogurt box in one hand and waved her other hand slightly, causing the yogurt box to shake along with it. "No, I meant I’ll sleep on my side."
Hao Hao had long been eyeing me with desire.
Yun Li's mind suddenly went blank as she felt a metaphorical hat being placed on her head. "I... I didn't—"
Jiang Shiyu, wearing a black apron over a simple gray sweatshirt, had a long neck and a prominent Adam's apple, creating a perfect curve. He raised an eyebrow slightly.
"Sharing a room isn't out of the question," he said, "but you need to hold back a bit; otherwise, I might get scared."
Yun Li's face turned bright red, and she hurriedly explained, her voice trembling. "W-what? I meant that you can sleep in bed while I sleep on my side!"
Jiang Shiyu looked as if he had just realized something and let out a sigh of relief. "Oh, is that so? The bed is meant for you; go ahead and take a look."
Yun Li shook her head and sat down on the carpet, holding a yogurt cup with an expression of embarrassment and indignation.
Jiang Shiyu untied his apron and set it aside before taking her hand. "I'll keep you company."
He gently pushed her toward the bedroom, opening the door. What greeted them was not the previous dark and gray decor.
The room had been transformed into warm tones; the black curtains were replaced with creamy lace ones, and the bedding was in lighter shades. The sofa under the bed and the small round table by the floor-to-ceiling window also followed this lighter theme.
It looked nothing like what a boy would typically prefer.
Yun Li turned to him, curious. "When did you change this?"
"During winter break," he replied.
Yun Li felt a mix of emotions. Their time together had been short, and winter break was just around the corner. In just half a month, he had completely changed the decor of his home.
She wrapped her arms around his waist. "Why did you change it?"
He embraced her back and rubbed his chin against her head. "Black was too gloomy. I figured you wouldn't like it."
Outside, the fish was ready. Jiang Shiyu sprinkled some chopped green onions over it before fishing it out of the pot.
The braised crucian carp was finally done.
Yun Li sniffed the air, exclaiming how delicious it smelled.
Jiang Shiyu noticed her craving and picked up a pair of chopsticks, using them to pick a piece of fish belly meat. She fed it to Yun Li, who took a bite and her eyes lit up instantly.
Nodding her head, she exclaimed, "It's so good!"
In the end, they used the remaining cabbage to stir-fry a simple dish of sautéed cabbage.
