On Friday night, after finishing her practice, Qin Nianchu sat on a chair, drenched in sweat, her hair still looking messy.
As she untied her hair clips and hairnet, she turned to Li Li and Xiu'er. "My brother is taking me out for dinner tomorrow. Do you both want to join?"
Spending the entire day in Wu Fang without any entertainment was just too boring for college life.
Chen Jin Xiu was combing her hair. "I’m afraid I can’t make it tomorrow. I have to go home; it’s my mom’s birthday, and I need to celebrate with her."
Chen Jin Xiu was from Jingdi and would always go home on weekends when she had the chance.
Qin Nianchu and Yun Li were both from Jiangzhou, but Qin Nianchu's maternal grandparents lived in Beijing, so sometimes she would visit them as well.
"Let’s all go there together!"
Yun Li was pressing on her tense scalp, thinking about Jiang Shiyu. She wondered if he would be there.
"Let’s take a chance! What if he is?"
"Okay, what time tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow evening at seven. After dinner, we might go out to have some fun, but if you find it too noisy, we can leave early."
The next day, even though there were no classes on the weekend, she got up early to practice.
When they arrived at Wu Fang, Yun Li started to warm up her body. The cold winter weather made it easy for her muscles to tighten up, so she needed to stretch.
Wearing Bluetooth earbuds, she played some songs; all of them were rhythmic piano pieces that helped calm her mind.
Yun Li did a high knee lift followed by a burpee before starting her technique practice. Only after thoroughly warming up did she begin working on her legs and waist.
She had started learning dance at the age of four; her father was a dance teacher, so she grew up in an environment surrounded by dance.
Her natural talent surpassed that of many others—she had a small head and face with long arms and legs. Standing at nearly six feet tall, she didn’t seem short at all; people often mistook her for being around five foot seven due to her proportions.
Her sense of rhythm had always been good since childhood, although her body was somewhat stiff. Fortunately, having practiced from a young age made it less strenuous for her now.
She grasped techniques quickly but knew that there were many talented dancers like Jing Wu around, so she couldn’t afford to slack off; it was easy for someone to surpass her.
After finishing their morning practice, the three of them went to the cafeteria for lunch. After eating, Chen Jin Xiu packed her things and headed home.
Qin Nianchu went to take a shower first while Yun Li opened her wardrobe, contemplating what outfit to wear for the evening.
She took out a camisole and a pair of loose-fitting jeans. Wearing a skirt seemed inconvenient for running around, and she couldn't wear anything too formal, or it would look suspicious. This outfit was quite simple; the camisole was a soft yellow, and the deep blue wide-leg jeans were plain with no embellishments. Just as Yun Li was lost in thought, the bathroom door suddenly swung open.
Qin Nianchu called out, "Ah, that feels so good! I'm not sticky anymore!"
Yun Li, startled like a frightened deer, hurriedly stuffed the clothes away, flustered and unsure of what to do.
Qin Nianchu, wiping water off her chin, noticed Yun Li's odd behavior and approached her. "What are you busy with? Why are you so flustered?"
Yun Li feigned ignorance. "Nothing! Are you done washing? Then I’ll go wash up."
Qin Nianchu watched Yun Li's slightly panicked back with a teasing smile; something was definitely off. As soon as she stepped inside and closed the door, Qin Nianchu began to quietly open the wardrobe.
A row of clothes hung neatly, nothing particularly special about them. By the time she finished washing up and came out, Qin Nianchu had already hung her clothes out on the balcony.
Once done, Qin Nianchu returned to her chair and opened her laptop to catch up on her shows. After a week of missed episodes, she finally had time to watch.
"Want to join me?"
Yun Li was busy washing clothes, her wet hair wrapped in a towel. Her makeup was all washed off, leaving her face looking fresh and smooth with a hint of moisture.
"No, I'll finish washing and then organize my notes. I need to catch up on some notes from the chemistry class I didn’t have time to sort out," Yun Li said, usually setting aside time on weekends to tidy things up.
"Li Li, once you're done, can I borrow your notes? It's so great having you around; I can't even imagine what I'd do without you!" Qin Nianchu said while munching on chips, sounding overly flattering.
The course on Chinese Dance History was required for every department, so the material covered was the same across the board. Sometimes when Qin Nianchu forgot to take notes in class, she would directly ask Yun Li for hers.
"Sure," Yun Li replied.
The sunlight outside was bright, illuminating their dorm room while the air conditioning hummed comfortably. Yun Li hadn’t dried her hair yet; after soaking up some sun outside, it was already half-dry when she came back in.
Then, I began to organize my notes. Once I finished, I placed them directly on Qin Nianchu's desk.
