The Village Cadre arrived faster than they had anticipated. This was largely thanks to Huo Yaojun's assistance; without him, the village officials would have had no interest in getting involved in this matter.
The recent deaths of two Zhiqing had already given them enough headaches, and they certainly did not want to provoke someone like Hei Dou Niang. It was said that before marrying into the village, she had caused the deaths of her own mother and siblings, and after her marriage, she was no less troublesome. Although she wouldn’t actively seek to provoke others, she would not allow anyone to take advantage of her family.
Hei Dou had suffered greatly at her hands while alive; otherwise, why would he have begged the Zhiqing for help in finding sheep? Thus, the true culprit behind Hei Dou's demise was none other than herself. She was unwilling to admit this or accept the reality of the situation.
When the Village Cadre arrived, they merely threatened her a few times before sending her away, warning that if she continued her behavior, they would have the Revolutionary Committee take her away. Hei Dou Niang shot each of them a glare, clearly unconvinced. From her demeanor, it was evident that this matter was far from over. For now, she was just giving face to the Village Cadre; after all, she still had to live in this village.
Confronting the officials could lead to future troubles for her. However, she wasn’t foolish; she recognized that the Village Cadre’s threats were merely bluster and that they had no real intention of acting against her, which only fueled her arrogance further.
"I'm sorry," Yu Suihuan said as everyone dispersed, and Li Xiuzhen and Wang Jianjun finally emerged from their cleanup efforts.
"What is there to apologize for? This isn’t your fault; it’s Hei Dou Niang’s unreasonable behavior. I’m not one to confuse right and wrong!" Yu Suihuan noticed the guilt on the couple's faces and deliberately spoke lightly.
"It’s our fault for causing you trouble and leaving your yard in such a state," he added.
The couple looked troubled; after all, they were staying in Yu Suihuan's house. Living in someone else's home while making such a mess would weigh heavily on anyone’s conscience.
"Oh come on, it’s not a big deal! We can just clean up the yard!"
"Exactly, Li Xiuzhen! This isn’t your fault at all; we’ll just tidy things up!"
"Don't overthink it, let Nian and Sui come in and play for a while!"
The two grandmas chimed in, noting that they had never seen such a scene in all their years. It seemed that this house full of women truly needed a man around.
Seeing everyone gathered, Yu Suihuan picked up the water bucket from the corner, preparing to fetch some water to clean the yard. Just as Li Xiuzhen was about to help, someone else beat her to it.
"I'll do it!"
Huo Yaojun hurried over, snatching the bucket from Yu Suihuan's hands and striding towards the small courtyard to fetch water. Before long, he returned with a full bucket, shrugged off his jacket, and began washing the yard without a hint of disdain on his face.
This made Yu Suihuan and Li Xiuzhen look at him with newfound respect; it seemed this high-ranking youth wasn't as bad as they had thought.
"You really worked hard today; go wash up!"
With everyone pitching in, the yard was soon cleaned up, and the foul smell dissipated. Feeling a bit embarrassed, Yu Suihuan brought over a basin and towel for Huo Yaojun to wash his hands.
"Hey, just leave that there for me; I'll do it myself!"
Huo Yaojun took the basin and placed it on a wooden post by the courtyard wall before starting to wash up.
Yu Suihuan watched him intently, and for a brief moment, she thought she saw Yang Qinghe's shadow in Huo Yaojun. Perhaps it was because both were from prominent families; their subconscious actions bore striking similarities.
"Hey, are you crushing on him?"
Li Xiuzhen approached, lowering her voice and nudging Yu Suihuan's arm with her elbow.
"Not at all! I just felt for a moment that he resembled Yang Qinghe!"
"Even though I'm standing by Captain Yang, this Huo Yaojun isn't bad either. He comes from a good family but doesn't act arrogant, and he treats you well. He could be a good match; you might want to consider him!"
Yu Suihuan didn't want to say much more and simply smiled wryly.
"Are we all done? Go wash your hands; let's eat!"
Sister Lianzhi and the two grandmas had already prepared the meal and came out to call everyone in as they finished their tasks.
