Wang Lai scratched his head, feeling a bit flustered as he noticed a hint of anger on Yu Songyu's pretty face.
"Did you not use them? I can give you some paper and a pencil, but I haven't seen you use them at all."
"Oh, those? I've memorized everything!"
Wang Lai felt a bit wronged; he had indeed taken it seriously. How could he not when it was his first time going out to do business with the boss?
Yu Songyu seemed skeptical and pulled out her notebook.
"Alright then, tell me what’s on the first floor and their prices."
"One pound of eggs, one pound of white liquor, one box of Golden Fish cigarettes for fifteen, one box of Feima cigarettes, one pack of Daqianmen, one bottle of Wuliangye for a certain amount, and one sesame pancake."
Wang Lai rattled off the details, leaving Yu Songyu in awe.
He even remembered more varieties than she did, and the prices matched perfectly.
She hadn’t expected Wang Lai to have such an impressive memory. Truly, he was more remarkable than she had thought; it felt like she had struck gold.
"Cough, cough, cough! That’s enough. You should write all this down on paper later and organize it for me!"
Now convinced that Wang Lai hadn’t been slacking off, Yu Songyu cleared her throat a few times to mask her embarrassment; one should never underestimate others.
"But I can’t write!"
Wang Lai felt shy again as he scratched his hair. Yu Songyu was too beautiful; he couldn’t bring himself to look her in the eye.
"Well, fine. Just tell me what to write!"
The two took a car back to the town. Uncle Bull Cart hadn’t arrived yet, so Yu Songyu spontaneously decided to take Wang Lai to the local Supply and Marketing store.
Wang Lai thought Yu Songyu still wanted him to remember prices, so he paid extra attention while they were there.
Several salespeople recognized Yu Songyu and treated her politely. Even with Wang Lai following her, they didn’t say anything rude.
"I want this piece of fabric. And this one—let’s take six yards of that!"
Yu Songyu had her eye on two pieces of fabric; they would make great men's clothing.
Initially, she only intended to make an outfit for Yang Qinghe, but seeing how shabby Wang Lai's clothes were, she decided to make him an outfit as well.
Yang Qinghe was taller and sturdier than Wang Lai; she wondered if six yards would be enough for a complete outfit.
When they reached her doorstep, Yu Songyu thanked Uncle Bull Cart and turned to look at Wang Lai.
"Bring the things inside!"
"Okay!"
Wang Lai carried the items into the house, but just as he was about to go in, he was called back by Yu Songyu.
"Hey? Wait a minute!"
Wang Lai immediately stopped in his tracks, waiting for Yu Songyu's instructions.
"Grandma, I bought some fabric today. This piece is for you to make a shirt for him, and that piece is for Yang Qinghe."
The Little Old Lady didn’t quite understand why her granddaughter wanted to make clothes for Wang Lai, but since her granddaughter had said so, she believed there must be a reason behind it.
"Alright, come here! I need to measure you!"
The Little Old Lady enjoyed doing some sewing and felt a sense of accomplishment from it.
"Huh?"
Wang Lai stood there in shock, thinking he must have misheard. Why would anyone make clothes for him?
"Tsk, what are you standing there for? Go on!"
Yu Songyu gave him a knowing look, urging him to follow his grandmother into the house.
For the first time in his life, someone wanted to make clothes for him, and he felt incredibly out of place. At that moment, his heart was filled with mixed emotions; he couldn’t quite determine whether Yu Songyu’s actions stemmed from pity or if she truly considered him one of her own.
