Yu Songyu lifted the cloth on her basket slightly, signaling the man to come closer.
Upon seeing the contents of the basket, the man's eyes lit up. "How much are you selling it for?"
"One jin for six mao five," she replied.
"I'll take as much as you have!"
Pork was priced at eight mao five per jin, and it required a ticket to buy. This was ticketless and even cheaper by a few mao; who would turn that down?
"One liang is equal to one jin!"
Judging by his attire and demeanor, the man was definitely not an ordinary person.
"One jin is equal to ten jiao; just give me the price."
The man silently calculated again in his mind and found that it matched Yu Songyu's answer.
"That won't do; we should stick to the proper pricing."
As he spoke, he began to take out money. It wouldn't be right for a big man like him to take advantage of a young woman. Besides, the price was already quite reasonable.
"No worries, just continue to support my business next time!"
Yu Songyu thought he was just an ordinary customer and didn't think much of it.
The man looked at Yu Songyu with interest, appreciating her straightforwardness compared to other farmers' wives who would haggle over a few mao. He preferred dealing with someone like her, so he decided to probe further.
"When will you be back next time?"
"I'll come again tomorrow. By the way, I also have some chickens, ducks, and two fish in my basket; do you want any?"
Yu Songyu reached out to take the two large bills he handed her and opened her basket wide for him to see.
The man quickly glanced through the contents of the basket, still smiling.
"I'll take all of these too; how much is that in total?"
"No need to calculate; if you want all of this, I'll give you a flat rate—just trust me on this."
The man quickly realized he wouldn't be at a disadvantage, so he reached into his pocket and handed two Large Unity bills to Yu Songyu.
"Alright, the goods are sold out, so I’ll be on my way," she said, slinging her backpack over her shoulder and preparing to leave. She thought that since it was still early, she could find a secluded spot to take out some items from her space and sell them.
"Miss, please wait!" Just as Yu Songyu was about to walk away, the man stopped her.
"Is there something you need?" she asked.
"I heard you mention that you would come back tomorrow, which means you still have goods on hand?"
Yu Songyu's demeanor shifted; she became wary and eyed the man with suspicion.
"Yes," she replied cautiously.
"I’d like to buy some more, if it’s convenient for you," he said.
Yu Songyu studied his eyes and sensed he wasn’t lying.
"To be honest, I’m with the Soda Factory’s procurement team. With the year-end approaching, we’re looking to improve everyone’s meals," he explained, lowering his voice to reassure her.
Hearing this eased Yu Songyu's concerns. If he was indeed buying for the factory, then the demand must be significant. This could be a big opportunity for her.
"How much do you want?" she asked.
"At least one or two hundred pounds," he replied confidently.
"No problem, but I can’t move that much meat by myself. Could we possibly arrange to meet somewhere else for the transaction?"
