The Zhiqing were bundled up tightly, with only their eyes visible to see the path ahead, while the rest of their bodies were wrapped snugly against the cold. Yu Songyu had a thick cotton coat and a warm hat from Aunt Wang, so she wasn't feeling too chilly. However, being so heavily wrapped made it difficult to move, especially with the thick layer of snow beneath her feet; every step felt laborious.
By midday, they finally arrived at their destination. The area was vast, filled with freshly cut trees stacked in various sizes. Yu Songyu's task was to measure the diameter of each log and mark it clearly on the surface for easy identification.
The work turned out to be much more strenuous than Yu Songyu had anticipated. Climbing the mountain in such heavy clothing drained most of her energy. Once at the top, she had to bend low and reach high to take measurements, which was no easy feat.
After working hard, it was nearly one or two in the afternoon. The Zhiqing had brought their own meals, and they could access hot water from the duty room, which would suffice for a meal. Looking at the wild vegetable stew in her hands, Yu Songyu didn’t feel burdened by the day’s labor. On the contrary, she was filled with anticipation for the new life that awaited her in this era.
She had low blood sugar, and this food was essential; if she fainted, it would surely cause trouble. With that thought in mind, she settled down with a bowl of hot water and began to eat heartily.
This scene was noticed by Yang Qinghe, who came in to fetch water. Seeing her like this made him feel a twinge of sympathy. After a short break, Yu Songyu felt her feet slowly regain sensation. Although the clothing from this era kept her warm, it felt somewhat cumbersome. Given her daily labor needs, she required lighter clothing; if she had time, she would need to return to modern times to purchase some essentials.
Just as Yu Songyu was lost in thought, a rough female voice called out to her. "Yu Zhiqing! Time to head down!"
Sighing softly, Yu Songyu tucked away her unfinished stew into her coat pocket. Although this coarse food was healthy, it was still something she found hard to get used to as a person from modern times.
"Follow me and step in my footprints!"
She may appear rough and sturdy, but surprisingly, she has a delicate heart.
"Thank you! I rushed out last time and forgot to ask your name!"
Yu Songyu followed closely behind her, stepping in the footprints she left, making sure not to fall behind.
"My name is Li Xiuzhen, from Xingtai in Hebei. I've been in the countryside for a year. What about you?"
Li Xiuzhen slowed her pace to match Yu Songyu's speed. She hadn’t caught the name of this seemingly soft and delicate girl yesterday.
"I'm Yu Songyu, like the pine under heavy snow, and the elm behind the willow shade!"
Ahem!
Li Xiuzhen coughed awkwardly, feeling a bit embarrassed. She didn’t know which elm was referred to in that phrase.
"Pine as in pine tree, and elm as in Yu Shu! My hometown is in Henan Province."
"Henan Province? That's close! We can visit each other's families together in the future!"
Li Xiuzhen sounded a bit excited; her already robust voice boomed like thunder when she raised it.
Yu Songyu took a closer look at Li Xiuzhen’s appearance. This girl could be described as plain-looking, with short hair like a boy's and standing a good half head taller than herself.
She had a large face, big mouth, broad nose, and a sizable backside. Her waist was thick, legs sturdy, and arms strong—a typical robust figure.
Though not conventionally attractive, the smile on her face was genuine and warm-hearted.
As they interacted more, Yu Songyu felt that Li Xiuzhen had a straightforward personality. What she said was clear-cut; there were no twists or turns.
Yu Songyu enjoyed being around someone like her; it was refreshing and effortless.
