In the stillness of the night, the cold wind howled outside the tent, and Pei Guanjing did not sit for long before he left.
Even though Ye Chen was Kun Ze, he should not harbor such thoughts about him.
At twenty-four years old, he was a full ten years older than Ye Chen, and he had taken him as a disciple. Once a teacher, always a father; at his age, he could easily be Ye Chen's uncle. Moreover, even if he were to seek Ye Chen's hand in marriage from King Huai'an in the future, how could King Huai'an ever betroth him to someone of such humble origins?
In the end, Pei Guanjing could not forgive himself for having that dream.
Since he could not sleep, he darkened his face and got up to fetch a bucket of cold water, pouring it over himself.
On this night before summer, the cold water was piercingly icy, yet no matter how much he poured it over himself, it could not extinguish the restless flame in his heart.
He changed into a fresh set of clothes and lay down once more.
However, as soon as he closed his eyes, visions of Ye Chen lying in his arms with flirtatious eyes filled his mind. But when he opened his eyes, he could hear Ye Chen's soft and sweet voice calling out "Master, Master."
Thus, Pei Guanjing spent the latter half of the night tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep. Listening to Ye Chen's steady breathing from the side only deepened his frustration.
The next morning, when Pei Guanjing got up, dark circles hung under his eyes, making him look utterly exhausted and devoid of spirit.
He had never felt this tired even after executing missions for three days and nights without sleep.
As soon as he stepped outside, he ran into Ye Chen. His face was gloomy, and weariness was evident in his expression, as if shrouded by a layer of gloom.
As soon as Ye Chen saw Pei Guanjing, the embarrassing and awkward scene from yesterday surged back to his mind, making him wish he could find a crack in the ground to hide in. His head instinctively lowered even further.
"Master... I..." Just when Ye Chen finally mustered the courage to look up and greet Pei Guanjing, Pei Guanjing didn’t even spare him a glance. He simply waved his sleeve and turned away, leaving Ye Chen with a tall yet somewhat lonely silhouette.
What... what was going on? He hadn’t even confronted him yet, and Pei Guanjing was already giving him the cold shoulder?!
Little did Ye Chen know that Pei Guanjing had already tainted his dreams the night before, indulging in quite a few inappropriate things.
So when Pei Guanjing saw Ye Chen, the scenes from last night’s dream surged through his mind like a tidal wave.
The boy's smile was as bright as a flower, his soft voice affectionately calling out "Master, Master," while he found himself lost in those moments, the shameful actions he had taken vividly replaying before his eyes.
Pei Guanjing felt he could not bear to face such a version of himself and had no idea how to confront Ye Chen.
Thus, at the moment their eyes met, he lowered his head, wore a stern expression, and hurriedly brushed past Ye Chen without saying a word, ignoring his greeting completely.
Ye Chen stood there in a daze, watching Pei Guanjing's proud figure grow distant, momentarily at a loss for words. After quite some time, he finally became furious out of embarrassment and kicked the ground hard, sending dust flying.
"What the hell! What’s going on? I’ve been touched and didn’t turn around so coldly; he touches me and puts on this sour face?"
The more Ye Chen thought about it, the angrier he became, flames of indignation rising within him. If it weren’t for wanting to cling tightly to Pei Guanjing’s powerful support—after all, if one day his identity as Kun Ze was exposed, he would still need him to speak up for him—he wouldn’t have lowered himself to initiate a greeting.
With frustration weighing heavily on his heart, Ye Chen muttered under his breath while continuously kicking at the stones beneath his feet. Each kick was filled with force as if he wanted to vent all his grievances and anger on those little stones, wishing he could kick them all the way to the horizon so that all his troubles would disappear.
“Damn it, Pei Guanjing!!!”
That day, Pei Guanjing did not show up at the Medical Camp at all, and by evening, there was still no sign of him.
It wasn't until late at night that Ye Chen, awakened by a faint noise at the door, realized that Pei Guanjing had returned.
The next day, the situation remained the same. In the following days, Pei Guanjing's absence continued. It seemed he was truly preoccupied with something important, or perhaps he was deliberately avoiding Ye Chen.
Ye Chen felt increasingly frustrated and had no idea what the problem was.
He had stood several times in front of the thin wooden partition, gazing at the dim light of the oil lamp filtering through the white curtain, contemplating whether to rush in and clarify things.
But then he thought, how should he even start? He knew all too well what kind of person Pei Guanjing was.
After more than half a year of interaction, they had finally developed a semblance of a mentor-student relationship, and things had just begun to ease up. Unexpectedly, they had reverted to that distant state once again. It seemed that all previous efforts had been in vain.
At this moment, the phrase "If you want something done right, do it yourself" resonated more clearly than ever in Ye Chen's mind.
In truth, he harbored a stubborn streak deep down. Why should he always lower himself before Pei Guanjing, constantly trying to read his mind and act according to his mood? He decided he would no longer cater to him; let him do as he pleased!
Thus, Ye Chen ultimately chose not to step into Pei Guanjing's compartment to seek answers.
