The so-called Medical Camp is essentially an ancient version of a large emergency room, serving as the primary location for Military Doctors to treat injured soldiers.
From a distance, Ye Chen spotted the Medical Camp. There was no particular reason for his attention; it was simply that this Medical Camp was exceptionally large, two or three times bigger than the other tents nearby, making it hard to miss.
At the top of the tent's cylindrical structure was a long white ribbon fluttering in the wind, a striking splash of pure color against the dusty battlefield that was hard to forget.
Upon entering the Medical Camp, Ye Chen was greeted by a spacious tent constructed from sturdy wooden beams. Every few feet, there was a wooden plank wide enough for an adult to lie down on. Normally, this place would be sparsely populated, but due to the sudden attack by the Wolf Tribe earlier that morning, several individuals were lying on the planks, moaning in pain from their severe injuries.
However, none of this was the main focus.
The moment Ye Chen stepped into the Medical Camp, his gaze was drawn to a striking figure clad in white.
As he hurriedly scanned the crowd upon entering, he noticed this unique splash of color among the others.
Soldiers came and went, occasionally lifting the tent flaps, and sunlight poured in, illuminating this person’s back, making it impossible for Ye Chen to focus on anyone else.
The white robe worn by this individual created a stark contrast with the surrounding soldiers, resembling a Bai Lian blooming in muddy waters.
In an instant, that thought crossed Ye Chen's mind.
"Hey, you’re from the Canteen, right?" Suddenly, someone behind Ye Chen spoke up.
Startled, Ye Chen turned around and handed over the lunch box he was carrying. "Yes, Chef Wang sent me to deliver food."
The person wore an apprentice's white robe typical of Little Medics. He wiped the blood off his hands with a cloth before grabbing two buns from the lunch box and stuffing them into his mouth. He then waved at Ye Chen and said, "Alright, go distribute buns to the others. I'm busy here; once I finish eating, I have more work to do."
Ye Chen glanced over and noticed at the apprentice's feet lay a soldier who had lost half of his leg.
The soldier was unconscious, with a gruesome wound where his leg had been severed; flesh and bone were exposed and blood oozed from the mangled tissue. The stench of blood quickly filled the air. Ye Chen shut his eyes and hurried past.
Ye Chen made a concerted effort to ignore the "inappropriate" scenes around him, but unfortunately, in addition to the smell of blood, there was also the scent of Xin Xiang emanating from the injured people, lingering at the tip of his nose and making his head feel dizzy.
Finally, after distributing steamed buns to all the apprentices, Ye Chen approached the pristine figure in white.
He glanced around. The other Military Doctors were dressed in apprentice robes, while he wore a medical officer's white coat. It seemed he was indeed the Doctor Pei that Chef Wang had mentioned earlier.
"Doctor Pei, I've brought you your meal," Ye Chen said softly as he placed two buns on the table beside him.
Hearing Ye Chen's voice, the man in front continued his work without pause, lightly responding, "Got it, just put it aside."
Those few words flowed into Ye Chen's ears like a clear spring in the mountains.
Curious about the man's appearance, Ye Chen stole a few more glances.
The man seemed to sense the gaze from behind him. He set down the needle he was holding and suddenly turned around, locking eyes with Ye Chen.
"It’s you!" Ye Chen's eyes lit up as he smiled and said, "So it’s you!"
Pei Guanjing frowned slightly and asked, "Do we know each other?"
Ye Chen was taken aback by this question.
Right, he was now Ye Chen from the capital, not Ye Chen from Sun Family Village. It would be better not to reveal his identity to avoid any risk of exposing Xiao Feng's situation.
After a moment of silence, Ye Chen quickly smiled at Pei Guanjing. "Don’t you remember me? About half a month ago at Lan Zhou Yongji Inn, I saw you dining on the second floor when I registered for military service downstairs. You even nodded at me."
He finished speaking in one breath, but inexplicably felt cold sweat trickling down his back.
Pei Guanjing's amber eyes subtly shifted with Ye Chen's movements, resembling the gaze of a dangerous feline lurking in the shadows.
Ye Chen waited for what felt like an eternity, though it was merely a few seconds. A faint expression appeared on Pei Guanjing's face, almost negligible.
He rose from his seat, his figure instantly overshadowing Ye Chen's: "Oh, about that, I do have a bit of an impression."
Ye Chen dared not speak further. Given Doctor Pei's demeanor, he was cautious not to say anything that might jeopardize his current situation.
Once everyone had finished eating, Ye Chen collected the plates one by one and left quickly without looking back, fearing he might be caught.
At the moment Ye Chen lifted the tent flap to leave, Pei Guanjing paused with the silver needle in hand. He glanced at Ye Chen's departing figure, the dark hue in his eyes nearly consuming his entire pupil.
When Ye Chen returned to the kitchen in the canteen, Chef Wang and Fu Gui had nearly completed their tasks.
Thus, the kitchen was left with only Ye Chen to tidy up the last mess.
By the time everything was organized, night had fallen.
Outside, rows of bonfires flickered to life, accompanied by a cacophony of chatter as if celebrating something.
When Ye Chen stopped a passing soldier to inquire, he learned that some people were gathered around the bonfire, roasting wild deer they had hunted during patrols in the nearby hills.
Perhaps it had been a long time since they had meat; many soldiers off duty had gone over there. It was uncertain if one deer would be enough for so many people.
Yet often, people gathered for the excitement rather than for a taste of warm food. And Ye Chen was one of those people.
Using his size to his advantage, Ye Chen easily squeezed into the front row of the bonfire crowd and found a warm spot to soak in the heat.
The temperature difference between day and night here is extreme; spending just one night outdoors could cost a life.
Ye Chen sat cross-legged in front, close to the fire, rubbing his delicate, fair fingers in the flickering flames. If one didn’t look closely, they might seem almost transparent.
Beside Ye Chen sat Tian Qian, one hand holding a teacup while the other rested on his bent leg. He had been watching Ye Chen's hands for quite some time with a sidelong glance.
Suddenly, he reached out with his long arm, pulling Ye Chen into his embrace. Leaning close to his ear, he exhaled a warm breath and whispered, “Brother, how come your hands are even softer than the girls at Yixiang Pavilion?”
Ye Chen was momentarily taken aback. After all, as men, it was common for them to share a Submissive lder or two, so he didn’t immediately grasp the deeper meaning behind the man's words.
“Hey, it’s just that it’s too cold; I applied some lard to prevent cracking.” As he spoke, Ye Chen smiled and pretended to reach into his side pocket to pull some out for him.
The man was clearly stunned; it was the first time he had encountered someone so oblivious to flirtation.
Nearby, someone overheard their conversation and burst into laughter. “Zhou Laosan, look at you today! This guy isn’t falling for your charms; who are you trying to impress with those flirty eyes?”
The laughter was loud enough to draw the attention of soldiers around them.
Ye Chen awkwardly smiled as all eyes turned toward him, filled with heat and mockery, their intentions unmistakable.
At that moment, how could Ye Chen not realize that these big men were trying to hit on him?
