Two figures stood in the desolate wilderness, completely unaware of the surrounding chaos. One of them, Bai She Lao Zhe, narrowed his eyes, his pupils constricting like a serpent's as he addressed the other. "Are you here to prove the authenticity of the Pledge of the Covenant and Covenant Magic?"
The Pledge of the Covenant was an ancient relic from a bygone era. It was said that many years ago, during the reign of a Great Dynasty, the people suffered under its rule while the Seven Great Lords harbored ambitions of their own. Each sought to overthrow the Great Dynasty and claim power for themselves.
However, mutual suspicion and fear kept them from acting. They were wary that if one of them made a move, the others would unite to eliminate him and seize his advantage. As a result, they allowed the crumbling Great Dynasty to linger on for far longer than it should have.
Then came a Grand Mage who, for the sake of the people, contacted the Seven Great Lords and established a Pledge of the Covenant. United by this oath, they fought together and ultimately toppled the Great Dynasty, laying the foundation for what would become known as the Seven Kingdoms.
Of course, such mystical matters were never recorded in history books. The official accounts merely stated that the Seven Great Lords united against a tyrant and were praised for their valor, obscuring the truth behind their actions.
The truth was that the Pledge of the Covenant came with a unique magic from that Grand Mage, which ensured that all parties involved would harbor no ill intentions and cooperate with one another. For instance, if one lord fought valiantly but lost all his soldiers in battle, he would still control vast territories filled with riches.
As long as the other lords honored this covenant, no matter how envious or greedy they might feel, they would not entertain thoughts of seizing his lands for themselves. In fact, they would offer assistance by sending soldiers to help him out. These reinforcements would be completely loyal and would not engage in any treachery.
This was merely an example of how the Pledge of the Covenant worked; in reality, it was unlikely that any of the Seven Great Lords would deplete their entire forces. After all, the Pledge had a time limit of three days—who would be foolish enough to risk everything within such constraints?
Indeed, there was little fear that time would run out before they could regroup. This only served to highlight how powerful and effective the Pledge of the Covenant truly was.
Idealism Magic operates without logic or reason. This is why Bai She Lao Zhe felt a stir of interest and was willing to listen as the figure in the black robe continued to speak. If there truly exists Covenant Magic, perhaps in the future, Evil Mages could indeed collaborate on a large scale.
However, caution was still necessary; it was unreasonable for Bai She Lao Zhe to blindly trust the claim of Covenant Magic. Who could tell what was real or fake? One could easily present a simple trap or a minor magical artifact and claim it was Covenant Magic, leading to instant death upon contact.
The figure in the black robe, however, seemed sincere. He raised his hand and produced a scroll. "Don't be anxious, my friend. I can either catch a wild beast at random, or you can specify one that would suffice as food for Bai She. Then I will demonstrate Covenant Magic on you and the beast. That way, we can discern the truth."
Bai She Lao Zhe felt increasingly intrigued; the other party's willingness to let him choose indicated a high level of confidence. Yet, he knew he couldn't simply follow the other's rhythm completely.
As he remained still, two small snakes of different colors emerged from the eastern and western edges of the forest, respectively. As they slithered outward, they did so without revealing any signs of their intentions.
